The 2026 Framework Laptop 12 refresh pairs Intel Core Series 3 processors with a 360-degree convertible design and Framework’s repairable, upgradeable approach. Its appeal is clearest for people who value replaceable parts, Linux options and pen-capable touch input. The trade-offs include a 60Hz display with 50% NTSC color coverage and an important uncertainty: Framework has not established that this laptop itself is facing an unprecedented shortage, and independent testing of the refreshed model is not available in the cited coverage.
What changed in the 2026 Framework Laptop 12?
This refresh uses Intel Core Series 3 processors, rather than the 13th Gen Intel processors in the original 2025 Laptop 12. Framework announced the new generation on August 18, 2026. Contemporary coverage has called the platform “Wildcat Lake,” but Framework’s announcement and product page identify the processors as Core Series 3, so that is the clearest name to use when distinguishing this version.

The new processor choices are Core 3 304, Core 5 320 and Core 7 350. Framework also says the new Core Series 3 mainboard, fingerprint reader and backlit input cover are backward compatible with the original Laptop 12. That gives existing owners a potential upgrade path without requiring them to replace the entire machine; the value of a mainboard swap will depend on the part price and the rest of the owner’s configuration.
Price and the shortage question
Framework’s current official product page lists the DIY Laptop 12 starting at $549. Framework announced prebuilt Fedora 44 KDE Plasma configurations starting at $699. PC Gamer reported base DIY processor-option prices of $549 for Core 3 304, $779 for Core 5 320 and $999 for Core 7 350, before DIY memory and storage. Those are starting figures, not complete build totals: DIY buyers must account for memory, an SSD and any selected options. Prices, currency and stock can change, so check the live Framework configurator for the total in your region.

The “unprecedented shortage” framing needs qualification. Component pricing pressure was reported during 2026, but the available evidence does not establish that the Laptop 12 itself was in an unprecedented shortage or quantify its current supply. Tom’s Hardware reported on April 7, 2026, that Framework’s then-current DDR5 DIY memory pricing was $13–$18 per GB depending on capacity, alongside SSD cost pressure. That is dated context, not an October price quote or a current Laptop 12 build estimate. Treat it as a warning that DIY component costs can affect the final bill, not proof of this laptop’s availability or configured price.
Configuration and upgrade options
The DIY model is for buyers willing to provide and install some components. Framework specifies one replaceable SO-DIMM slot supporting up to 64GB of DDR5-6400 memory and one M.2 2230 NVMe slot supporting drives up to 2TB. Confirm the live configuration and regional options before ordering; the stated capacities describe Framework’s specifications, not a test of every third-party module or drive.

- DIY: starts at $549 on Framework’s current product page. Framework describes Windows as a bring-your-own installation for this configuration.
- Prebuilt: announced Fedora 44 KDE Plasma configurations start at $699. The product page also lists preinstalled Fedora 44 KDE Plasma or Windows 11 Home or Pro under prebuilt specifications.

Framework’s own announcement says almost 80% of Laptop 12 owners run Linux across a range of distributions. That is a company-reported customer figure, not an independent survey. Fedora preinstallation gives Linux users a ready-to-use option, while DIY buyers can install their preferred operating system.

The Laptop 12 has a 12.2-inch, 1920×1200 LCD with a 16:10 aspect ratio, 60Hz refresh rate, rated brightness above 400 nits and 50% NTSC color coverage. The 360-degree hinge lets it fold between laptop and tablet-style positions. The panel’s brightness rating and touch-oriented versatility may suit everyday work and media, but 50% NTSC coverage and 60Hz are modest specifications for color-critical creative work or buyers seeking a high-refresh display.

It supports MPP 2.0 and USI 2.0 styluses. Framework does not state that a stylus is included, so buyers should not assume one comes in the box; verify accessory availability and protocol compatibility before purchasing a pen.
Four user-selectable expansion-card slots provide flexibility for ports. Framework describes the upper pair as Thunderbolt 4 and USB 3.2 Gen 2, with DisplayPort Alt Mode listed for those upper slots; the lower pair are USB 3.2 Gen 2. All four support USB Power Delivery. There is also a 3.5mm combo audio jack. The machine includes Wi-Fi 7, a 50Wh battery and weighs 1.3kg.

Battery life and performance: what is actually known?
There is not an independent Core Series 3 review result in the cited coverage, so its performance and real-world battery life remain unverified by those sources. Framework says early testing with the Core 5 320 showed 70% longer Netflix 4K streaming battery life than the original Laptop 12 with Core i5-1334U. Framework’s product-page footnote describes a July 2026 test using a Core 5 320, integrated graphics, 16GB RAM, a WD SN5000S 512GB SSD, 150-nit display brightness, Wi-Fi enabled and Best Power Efficiency mode. The company cautions that actual battery life may be lower and vary with configuration and use. This controlled, manufacturer-reported streaming result should not be treated as a typical-use runtime guarantee.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →For historical context only, PCWorld’s review of the original 13th Gen Laptop 12 reported PCMark 10 5,288, Cinebench R20 2,106, a HandBrake encode time of 2,648 seconds and 3DMark Time Spy 1,255. In its repeat local 4K video test, PCWorld reported 688 minutes; its reviewer also said their own workload produced about five hours. These figures belong to the prior-generation review unit and its test methods, not the Core Series 3 refresh. They cannot establish how the new processors compare in benchmarks or how long the refreshed Laptop 12 lasts in normal use.
Who should consider it?
- Consider it if replaceable memory and storage, repair documentation, a convertible hinge, pen-protocol support or a preinstalled Fedora option are meaningful to you.
- Think carefully if your priority is a color-accurate or high-refresh screen, or if you need proven Core Series 3 benchmark and battery results before buying.
- For DIY buyers, compare the complete configured cost—not just the $549 starting price—with your budget, including memory and storage.
- For original Laptop 12 owners, the stated backward compatibility of the new mainboard and selected input parts creates an upgrade possibility, but actual value depends on replacement-part pricing and your needs.
Verdict
The 2026 Framework Laptop 12 is a distinctive compact convertible whose strongest case is long-term ownership flexibility: it combines repair guides and replaceable components with four configurable port slots, Linux preinstall choices and Core Series 3 options. At $549 to start for DIY, however, the sticker price does not represent a complete build, and its 50% NTSC, 60Hz display is a clear compromise. Most importantly, Framework’s battery improvement is a specific early company test, not independent confirmation of everyday endurance, while the shortage evidence concerns broader component pricing rather than a proven Laptop 12 supply crisis. It is most compelling for buyers who prioritize serviceability and flexibility over display ambition or independently verified performance.
