It adds useful refinements over the original Refine, including flexible dual-pad lumbar support and armrests that lock for depth adjustment; the changes look less compelling as a reason for existing owners to upgrade. This assessment combines Fractal Design’s specifications with the observations of Tom’s Hardware reviewer Sarah Jacobsson Purewal, not firsthand testing.
What the Refine 2 offers
Fractal Design positions the Refine 2 for both gaming and everyday use. Across the range, its listed adjustments include synchro-tilt recline with adjustable tension and lock positions, seat height and depth, a height-adjustable and removable headrest, 4D armrests, and built-in lumbar support adjustable in height and depth. Fractal describes its lumbar support as flexible dual pads.

For the Fabric Dark model, Fractal specifies a Donati Dynamic mechanism, a 120 mm Class 4 gas piston, and 65 mm soft-PU casters with steel ball bearings. Its maximum back tilt is 125 degrees, with 11 lockable positions. These are manufacturer specifications for that model, not independent test results. See Fractal Design’s Fabric Dark product page.

Synchro-tilt links the movement of the seat and back as you recline. The Refine 2 lets users adjust the tilt tension and choose lock positions; the exact feel depends on the user and adjustment. Fractal’s FAQ notes that “Finding an ergonomic sitting position is individual to you,” and points to seat height and depth, headrest height, armrest position, and lumbar adjustment as ways to tailor the chair.

How the Refine 2 differs from the first Refine
Fractal lists several changes in the second generation: flexible dual-pad lumbar support, armrest depth locking, revised foam and mesh, new casters with steel bearings, a longer seat-depth range on fabric and hybrid versions, and a stated capacity increase from 125 kg to 135 kg. The headrest also reaches a lower minimum position, according to Fractal’s support information.
Tom’s Hardware reviewer Sarah Jacobsson Purewal considered the update real but modest. For owners of the first Refine, the new adjustments and parts may be welcome, but the review does not present them as a clear reason to replace a working chair. The comparison is based on the reported design changes and that reviewer’s assessment, not a controlled side-by-side test.

Which upholstery version should you choose?
The six configurations combine three upholstery choices with Light or Dark colorways. Fractal’s descriptions identify which surfaces use fabric or mesh; they do not establish that one option is cooler, more comfortable, or more durable in controlled comparisons.

| Version | Seat contact surface | Back contact surface | Seat depth | Seat height |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fabric | Fabric | Fabric | 425–500 mm | 490–610 mm |
| Mesh | Mesh | Mesh, with fabric sides | 450–505 mm | 485–605 mm |

Dimensions in the table are Fractal Design’s 2026 support specifications. Headrest height measured from the seat is listed as 580–700 mm across versions. Check the exact variant’s dimensions and consider how its contact materials suit your preferences rather than assuming the material name alone predicts comfort. See Fractal’s Refine 2 specifications.

Will it fit your body and desk?
Fractal recommends the chair for users 1.65–2.0 m tall and weighing 60–135 kg. The manufacturer explicitly describes these as recommended user-size figures, not minimum and maximum boundaries or a guarantee of fit. Its stated capacity is 135 kg. Those figures are a starting point: seat depth, seat height, desk height, and the positioning of the headrest and armrests affect whether the chair works for an individual.
- Compare your preferred seat depth with the model-specific ranges in the table. A chair that is too deep or shallow for your legs can be uncomfortable even when your height falls within the recommended range.
- Check the seat-height range against your desk and how you sit. Fabric and hybrid models are listed at 490–610 mm; mesh is listed at 485–605 mm.
- Think about armrest placement relative to the desk. The 4D armrests adjust in multiple directions, and Refine 2 adds depth locking.
- Use the recommended height and weight range as guidance, not a substitute for checking measurements or trying the chair if possible.
What reviewers report about assembly, weight, and tilt
In Tom’s Hardware’s review of the fabric version, Sarah Jacobsson Purewal reports that assembly was straightforward to do alone, while unpacking was the hardest part because the box was large. She describes the chair as heavy and difficult to maneuver. Those are her observations, not universal outcomes or a measurement of how every user will find the chair.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Purewal also found that the tilt limiter was less forceful than the original Refine’s but still resisted movement more than she preferred. She found tilting and maneuvering easier for her husband, who was taller and heavier. The report is a useful caution if easy movement or light recline is a priority, but it is one reviewer’s experience with the fabric model rather than a controlled comparison across users or upholstery versions. Tom’s Hardware’s verdict frames the Refine 2 as a possible middle ground between racing-style gaming chairs and pricier task chairs, with the chair’s weight and remaining tilt resistance as drawbacks.

Fractal states that mechanical parts have a five-year warranty and soft parts—including upholstery, lumbar pads, arm caps, and the headrest—have a three-year warranty. It also says the chair meets BIFMA X5.1 and EN 1335-1; ComputerBase describes EN 1335-1 as Type C. Quick Recap
Who should consider the Refine 2?
It may suit you if
- You want seat, lumbar, armrest, headrest, and recline adjustments in a chair with a restrained design.
- You have compared the seat dimensions with your body and desk, and the available fabric, mesh, or hybrid contact surfaces suit your preferences.
- You value the second-generation lumbar and armrest changes, and are comfortable with a heavy chair and reviewer-reported tilt resistance.
Look more closely before buying if
- You need a chair that is easy to move frequently or expect a very light recline; the reviewed chair’s weight and tilt resistance were drawbacks for one reviewer.
- You own the first Refine and are considering an upgrade solely for a major redesign. The documented changes are refinements, and Tom’s Hardware judged the update modest.
- You are relying on the recommended user range as proof of personal fit. Fractal says it is guidance, so compare the specific variant’s dimensions and, where possible, try it.
