In Isaac Asimov’s Foundation, mathematician Hari Seldon uses psychohistory to predict the Galactic Empire’s collapse and establish a Foundation on Terminus. Its stated mission is to preserve knowledge in the Encyclopedia Galactica; Seldon hopes that doing so will shorten the dark age after the Empire falls. The novels and Apple TV+ series share this premise, but the show reworks the story rather than transcribing it continuously.
What is psychohistory in Foundation?
Psychohistory is a fictional mathematical social science. In Seldon’s model, the behavior of very large populations can be predicted in broad strokes, even though the choices of any one person cannot. It is a tool for forecasting large-scale historical patterns, not a way to know exactly what an individual will do.

The Television Academy’s 2021 account of the premise describes Seldon forecasting the Empire’s destruction within five centuries and a dark age lasting 30,000 years. In the story, his plan is meant to reduce that dark age to one millennium. These numbers belong to Seldon’s fictional forecast; they are not real-world statistics or measurements.

What is the Foundation’s purpose?
Seldon proposes creating the Foundation to compile the Encyclopedia Galactica and preserve civilization’s accumulated knowledge through the coming collapse. The Foundation is established on Terminus, where the story’s opening premise places the project at the edge of the declining Empire.
#1 Best Overall
The encyclopedia is the stated project, but the larger aim is to help civilization recover sooner after imperial rule ends. The saga then follows the consequences of that plan across different eras and generations, rather than remaining a single, uninterrupted account of Seldon’s original undertaking.
What is the timeline of the Foundation books?
There are two different timelines to keep in mind: when Asimov published the stories and the order in which events happen in the fictional universe. The series grew over decades, and Asimov later connected it with his Robot stories, so publication sequence and in-universe chronology are not the same question.

Publication history
The stories began in magazines in 1942 and ran through 1944. Asimov collected and revised the early material into the novel Foundation, published in 1951; the original trilogy took shape with further books in 1952 and 1953. He later expanded the series and connected it to other stories, including the Robot cycle.

Where to begin
For a straightforward introduction to the central premise, start with Foundation, the 1951 novel. That is a practical recommendation, not a claim that Asimov declared it the sole correct reading order. Readers who want to follow a detailed in-universe chronology should use a reliable bibliography alongside the books, since a complete authoritative chronology is not established here.

The television series adapts the premise and characters but changes material and adds storylines to make a more continuous screen narrative. In a 2021 Television Academy interview, showrunner and executive producer David S. Goyer called it a “remix” and said, “It’s not a word-for-word adaptation.” He described season one as adapting the first half of the first book.
One clear change is Gaal Dornick: Gaal is male in the books and gender-flipped in the series. More broadly, familiar names and ideas may appear in altered or expanded stories. The books’ publication history and in-universe chronology should therefore not be treated as a direct episode-by-episode map of the show.
