If they’re still linked, the previous owner must remove them from Find My before you can pair them with a new account. If you can reasonably contact the owner, arrange to return them rather than trying to claim them.
First, identify the AirPods and their case
Apple’s reset steps differ by model and case controls. Don’t assume the case has a setup button on the back: newer models use taps on the front instead. Apple’s current reset guide, published September 16, 2026, covers AirPods 1, 2, 3, 4 (all models), 5 (both models), AirPods Pro 1, Pro 2, and Pro 3. See Apple’s model-specific reset guide.

Reset the AirPods
For either procedure, start by placing both AirPods in their charging case, closing the lid, and waiting 30 seconds. If they appear on a paired iPhone or iPad, open Settings > Bluetooth. Under My Devices, tap the More Info button next to the AirPods, choose Forget This Device, and confirm. If they are not listed, continue to the procedure for the case.
AirPods 1, 2, or 3; AirPods Pro 1 or Pro 2
- Open the charging-case lid.
- Press and hold the setup button on the back of the case for about 15 seconds.
- When the status light flashes amber and then white, follow the on-screen prompts to reconnect.
AirPods 4, AirPods 5, or AirPods Pro 3
- Open the charging-case lid.
- Double-tap the front of the case while the status light is on.
- Double-tap the front again when the light flashes white, then double-tap a third time when it flashes faster.
- When the light flashes amber and then white, follow the on-screen prompts to reconnect.
If the status light does not flash white, close the case for 20 seconds and repeat the correct model-specific sequence. The tap sequence and recovery step are from Apple’s reset instructions.

A reset does not release the previous owner’s account
Resetting affects the AirPods’ local pairing state; it does not clear Find My Lock or transfer ownership. AirPods can be associated with one Apple Account at a time for Find My. Apple says the previous owner must remove them from their account before you can pair them with a new account. Apple also says it cannot remove Find My Lock for you. Ask the previous owner to remove them
If you can contact the owner, ask them to remove the AirPods from their Apple Account in Find My. Apple provides removal options using an iPhone or iPad, a Mac, or iCloud.com; removal from one device is enough. A Bluetooth connection and being within range may make removal faster. If you cannot reach the owner
Do not treat a reset as an unlock. Apple says resetting AirPods that cannot be removed from the prior account prevents them from sharing their location with the previous owner, but they still cannot be paired with a new Apple Account until the association is removed. Apple states, “Apple can’t remove Find My Lock for you.” See Apple’s guidance on Find My Lock.
Consider returning the found AirPods
If there is a reasonable way to contact the owner, make arrangements to return them. Apple’s Find My guidance describes locating AirPods and using Lost Mode or contact information, but the available features vary by model and region. If the AirPods are offline, Find My may show only their last-known location; sound playback or nearby finding may not be available until they come online.
