A forward proxy acts on behalf of clients making outbound requests; a reverse proxy acts on behalf of a service receiving inbound requests. The quickest way to tell them apart is to ask whose traffic the proxy handles and which side of the connection it sits in front of.
How a forward proxy works
A forward proxy sits between one or more clients and the destinations they want to reach. The client, its organization, or a network administrator selects or configures the proxy. Requests travel outward through it, so it can mediate access to external resources.

Request path: Client(s) → Forward proxy → Internet destination
Organizations may use a forward proxy to centralize or regulate client egress. Depending on its configuration, a destination may see the proxy’s address rather than the client’s. That does not guarantee anonymity: what the proxy logs, what identity information a request carries, and how a protocol tunnel behaves all matter. MDN explains proxy and tunneling behavior in its HTTP proxy and tunneling guide. For example, NGINX Plus documents an HTTP CONNECT forward-proxy configuration that can tunnel HTTPS and other protocols; this is a product-specific configuration, not a capability to assume in every proxy deployment. See the NGINX HTTP CONNECT guide.

How a reverse proxy works
A reverse proxy is presented to clients as the endpoint for a service. It receives requests intended for that service, then forwards them to one or more backend or origin servers. It returns the selected server’s response to the client.
Request path: Client → Reverse proxy → Backend/origin server(s)

Because it sits on the service-facing ingress path, a reverse proxy can route requests among backends and can be configured to cache content, compress responses, centralize authentication, or handle TLS. These are possible functions, not automatic effects of adding a proxy. NGINX describes forwarding requests to an upstream server and returning its response in its reverse-proxy documentation.
Cloudflare provides a managed example: proxied HTTP and HTTPS traffic passes through its edge toward an origin, with features such as caching, load balancing, attack mitigation, and TLS handling available in that service context. This differs operationally from configuring and operating a reverse proxy yourself. See Cloudflare’s explanation of how its network works.

Forward proxy vs. reverse proxy
| Question | Forward proxy | Reverse proxy |
|---|---|---|
| Whose side does it represent? | A client or group of clients | A server, service, or group of origin servers |
| Where does it sit? | Between clients and external destinations | In front of the service’s origin servers |
| Typical traffic path | Outbound client requests | Inbound requests for a service |
| Common goals | Centralize or regulate client access to external resources; sometimes obscure the client address from a destination | Route or balance requests, cache or compress content, or centralize selected security and TLS functions |
| Who typically administers it? | The client, an organization, or a network operator | The service or application operator, or a managed edge provider |
These are common patterns, not limits on what a proxy can do. Proxy behavior depends on its configuration and protocol layer. MDN’s proxy server glossary and HTTP overview describe proxy functions including caching, filtering, load balancing, authentication, and logging.
Which type do you need?
- Choose a forward-proxy pattern when the goal is to manage or mediate clients’ outbound access to external destinations.
- Choose a reverse-proxy pattern when the goal is to accept traffic for a service and route it to backend servers, or to place configured functions such as caching or TLS handling on that ingress path.
The deciding factor is the traffic and control objective—not whether the proxy is a particular product. NGINX documents reverse-proxy routing to HTTP and non-HTTP upstreams, while its separate HTTP CONNECT forward-proxy guide specifies NGINX Plus R36 and later. Check product and version requirements before applying that forward-proxy example.

What a proxy does not guarantee
An address being hidden from one side of a connection does not, by itself, establish anonymity or security. A forward proxy may expose a client’s identity through other request information or retain logs. A reverse proxy that conceals an origin address or terminates TLS does not automatically secure the application behind it. Security depends on the controls configured and on how trust is handled between the proxy, clients, and backend servers. Cloudflare’s description of origin concealment and proxy-based protections applies to its own service context; it should not be generalized to every reverse proxy.
