Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Start by checking Epic Games’ service status and your internet provider’s outage notices. If Fortnite services are down or under maintenance, changing your router settings will not fix the problem; wait for service to recover and try again. If services are running, use the error message and your platform to narrow down whether the cause is the game, your connection, or your device.
The guidance below reflects Epic Games Support instructions checked on October 3, 2026. Epic’s help pages do not display publication dates, and service status can change, so check the current notices before troubleshooting.

Check for an outage before changing settings
- Check Epic Games Status for Fortnite and the relevant online services. If matchmaking or another required service is down or under maintenance, wait and retry after it recovers.
- Check whether your internet provider reports an outage or degraded service in your area. This matters especially if other games, websites, or devices are also having trouble.
- If you are on a console, check the platform’s network status and run its built-in connection test after checking for outages.
Epic says server issues or maintenance can cause matchmaking and ESP errors. Similar symptoms can also come from ISP routing, crowded or weak home Wi-Fi, a router, VPN or proxy settings, security software, or the device’s network setup. A connection error by itself does not identify which layer is responsible.

What matchmaking errors #1, #2, and #3 mean
Epic groups these errors primarily with server maintenance or network connection problems. Check service status first; if services are available, restart Fortnite and continue with the connection checks below.
#1 Best Overall
- Code for Bonus Virtual Item Included – Tooth Pick Pickaxe
- Hall Effect Thumbsticks and Triggers – Contact-free magnetic sensors in the thumbsticks and triggers provide a more fluid pro-level feel to help with precision and longevity
- Low Latency Wireless – Play wirelessly on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and Windows 10/11 using the included Wireless USB Adapter
- Advanced Gaming Buttons – Get an edge over the competition with 4 mappable buttons that you can program on the fly, mid-game—no system settings to configure
- 3-Way Trigger Locks – Set the travel distance of the triggers with three different positions to pull off quicker actions in your favorite FPS games or go full throttle in a high-end race car
| Error | Example message | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| #1 | “Weird. We couldn’t connect to the match. You can try again, but if the problem continues, check our status page.” | Service status, then your connection if services are available. |
| #2 | “We had trouble connecting to content beacon service. Give it another shot, if the problem continues, check our status page.” | Service status and your connection. If the message says you lack permission for content, check tournament requirements and eligibility instead; that variant may not be a network fault. |
| #3 | “Looks like all the Battle Buses headed out are full. Give it another shot in a few minutes, if it keeps up, visit our status page.” | Retry after a short wait, then check service status and your connection if it continues. |
If the relevant services are up and the error persists, follow the layered checks in this guide. Epic also recommends submitting a bug report when these matchmaking errors continue.
What to do about Matchmaking Error #5 or #7
Error #5
Epic says Matchmaking Error #5 appears when Fortnite cannot connect you to a match and is usually caused by a server issue or a network connection problem. Check service status, restart Fortnite, and then work through the connection checks below.
Error #7
Epic’s support article titled for Matchmaking Error #5 or #7 explains Error #5 but does not separately define Error #7. Do not assume that #7 has the same cause based on its number alone: check current service status, note the exact message, and use Epic Support if the general checks do not resolve it.

How to troubleshoot ESP-DIST-001 and other ESP errors
Epic describes ESP errors as usually connection-related. Start with service status and basic network checks before changing PC security or network settings.
- Restart Fortnite. If services are available, restart your modem and router; restart the computer too if you are playing on PC.
- Temporarily test a different connection, such as a mobile hotspot, if available. If Fortnite works on the alternate connection but not your usual one, that points toward the usual network or its route; contact your ISP with the details.
- Turn off a VPN or proxy for a test if you use one. Do not leave security protection disabled as a general fix.
- On PC, follow Epic’s operating-system-specific instructions for launcher cache, DNS, firewall, and security-software checks. Security products can block a connection, but the steps depend on the product and setup.
- Use vendor-specific instructions only when they apply. Epic lists a Bitdefender-specific path for ESP-DIST-001 and a separate Nintendo Switch MTU procedure; neither is a universal step for every player.
Epic also suggests turning off nearby Bluetooth devices as a troubleshooting test. If a change makes no difference, restore the setting rather than accumulating unrelated changes.
Fix “Connection to the Content Distribution Network failed! Curl Code: 7!” and “Network Connection Lost”
For a generic network message such as “Connection to the Content Distribution Network failed! Curl Code: 7!”, Epic points players to its general connection troubleshooting. A “Network Connection Lost” message also does not, by itself, distinguish an Epic service problem from an ISP, home-network, or device issue.

- Check Epic service status and your ISP’s outage notices.
- Restart Fortnite, then restart your modem and router if services are available.
- On console, run the console’s own network test and follow the current platform support instructions. Epic directs Xbox, PlayStation 4 and 5, and Nintendo Switch players to their respective platform guidance.
- If Xbox displays “Error Connecting to Epic Services Queue,” Epic directs players to Microsoft Support.
- On PC, check VPN or proxy use, firewall and security-software rules, launcher cache, DNS, background apps, the device clock, and required network domains using Epic’s instructions for your operating system.
Do not broadly disable firewall or antivirus protection. If a security setting appears involved, use the specific vendor or Epic instructions to make a targeted change and restore protection afterward.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHow to read Fortnite’s ping, packet loss, and jitter
Turn on Net Debug Stats
- In the Fortnite lobby, open Settings.
- Open Game UI and turn Net Debug Stats on.
- Select Apply. Network details appear in the upper-left corner of the screen.
A repeated “Disabled” display on its own does not affect gameplay.
Interpret the readings together
- Ping is the time for data to travel from your device to a game server and back, measured in milliseconds. Congestion, routing, and the match server can all affect it.
- Packet loss means some data does not arrive. Epic says it should be 0%; loss consistently above about 1% can cause in-game problems even when average ping is only a few milliseconds.
- Jitter is variation in latency. Look for a low, steady result rather than judging the connection from one ping number alone; comparing minimum and maximum can help show variation.
Compare readings during the conditions that cause the problem. A quiet test may not reveal congestion that appears while someone else is uploading, streaming, or downloading.

Run Epic’s sample endpoint test on a computer
Epic’s sample test sends 50 packets to an endpoint. On Windows 11, open Command Prompt and run:
ping ping-va.ds.on.epicgames.com -n 50
On macOS, open Terminal and run:
ping -c 50 ping-va.ds.on.epicgames.com
Epic’s example uses the ping-va host for the relevant subregion; choose the endpoint that matches the subregion you are testing when following its current guidance. This test uses ICMP, while Fortnite gameplay uses UDP. A normal endpoint ping therefore does not rule out every problem on the gameplay traffic path.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Reduce high ping or packet loss in order
- Stop or pause large downloads, uploads, cloud backups, and streams on your network, then compare the in-game readings again.
- If practical, connect the gaming device to the router with Ethernet. Wired Ethernet avoids Wi-Fi signal loss on that part of the connection, but it cannot fix an Epic outage, poor ISP routing, or a problem elsewhere on the route.
- If you must use Wi-Fi, test both bands where you actually play. Epic describes 2.4 GHz as longer-range but more susceptible to crowding, while 5 GHz is faster but has shorter range. Keep whichever gives the steadier result at your location.
- Restart the modem and router, then test again. If symptoms continue, compare the in-game statistics with the endpoint test and record the host and results.
- If high latency or loss persists, contact your ISP with the test host, results, and in-game ping, and explain when the problem occurs.
Epic notes that choosing a matchmaking subregion preference may increase queue times and reduce match quality. If you change it to favor a desired subregion, weigh that trade-off against connection consistency.

When router settings or hardware are worth investigating
Investigate the router after checking service status, your ISP connection, Wi-Fi conditions, and competing traffic. Epic says a router’s QoS or gaming mode may help prioritize Fortnite over large transfers, and a faulty router can impair performance. These are conditional possibilities, not guaranteed fixes, and buying a new router is not a standard first step.
An Ethernet cable is an optional low-cost way to test a wired connection if both the device and router have Ethernet ports and Wi-Fi signal loss is suspected. It will not resolve server outages, ISP routing problems, or every kind of packet loss.
What to send support if the problem continues
- The exact error wording and number, plus the platform and when it occurs.
- Whether Epic status and your ISP reported an outage or degradation at the time.
- Your Net Debug Stats readings, especially ping, packet loss, and jitter, observed during the problem.
- For an endpoint test, the hostname used and the command results.
- Which low-risk checks you tried and whether another connection, such as a hotspot or Ethernet, changed the result.
Contact your ISP when tests point toward your usual network or its route; contact Epic Support for a persistent Fortnite-specific problem after service and connection checks. For a console connection issue, use the platform’s current support path; Xbox’s Epic Services Queue message is specifically directed to Microsoft Support.
