WhatsApp’s optional parental controls can notify a linked parent or guardian when a teen creates or joins a group. To get these alerts, the teen and parent must agree to link their accounts, and the feature must be available in their region and app.
Check eligibility and availability
WhatsApp’s setup guidance describes parental controls for teens aged 13–17 and a parent or guardian aged 18 or older. Both people must agree to link their accounts, and WhatsApp requires the latest version of its app for iPhone or Android. The feature is rolling out gradually, so it may not appear in every region or account yet. Check the teen’s app for the Parental controls option before starting. Link the teen’s account to the parent

On the teen’s phone, open WhatsApp and go to Settings > Parental controls.

Follow the prompts to begin linking the account. The parent or guardian scans the QR code shown on the teen’s phone and verifies they are an adult.

Create a six-digit parent PIN. WhatsApp uses this PIN to access and change the teen’s parental-control settings.
Both the parent and teen need to consent to the link. WhatsApp’s parental-control setup guidance provides the account-linking steps.

Find and manage group activity alerts
On the parent’s phone, open WhatsApp > Settings > Parental controls, then select the teen’s account. In the account controls, review the available notification types and enable the Groups category. WhatsApp lists group chats being created, joined, or exited under Groups: When a group chat is created, joined or exited. WhatsApp’s activity-alert instructions describe how to review and manage notifications.
These are WhatsApp’s available group activity notifications, not a guarantee that every group-related event will be reported in every implementation. If the parental controls or Groups notification category does not appear, the feature may not yet be available to that account.

Understand what group privacy settings do—and do not do
WhatsApp group privacy settings govern whether someone can add the teen directly to a group. They do not prevent someone from sending an invitation link; joining through that link remains the teen’s choice. WhatsApp puts it plainly: “Joining a group through an invite link is always your choice.” See WhatsApp’s group privacy guidance.
Group admins also have controls for limiting who can add members or share invite links, and for requiring approval before new members join. These controls apply within a particular group; they do not replace linking the teen’s account if a parent wants WhatsApp’s activity notifications. Details are in WhatsApp’s group admin guidance.
