Choose Battle Royale for player-versus-player survival combat, or Save the World for cooperative missions against monster hordes. If you want Battle Royale’s PvP without building, try its Zero Build format. Save the World became free to play on April 16, 2026, according to Epic Games’ March 11, 2026 announcement.
How the two Fortnite modes play
| What matters | Battle Royale | Save the World |
|---|---|---|
| Opponents | Other players; the original mode was built around being the last player standing, as Epic described at launch in 2017. | Monster enemies, with players cooperating to complete missions. |
| Main activities | Survive and fight through a match. The original mode also featured building and destructible environments. | Scavenge materials, craft weapons, build defenses, and protect objectives from waves of enemies. |
| Building | Part of the original format; Zero Build removes building. | A core part of defense: players construct fortresses and trap tunnels around objectives. |
| Playing with others | Solo and team formats are supported, though available playlists can change; check the in-game menu. | Playable solo or with up to three friends, according to Epic’s current overview. |
| Access | Epic introduced Battle Royale as free to play in 2017. That historical launch detail does not establish current platform or pricing terms. | Free to play from April 16, 2026, per Epic’s announcement. |
Choose Battle Royale for PvP matches
Battle Royale is the fit if the appeal is competing against other people and trying to outlast them. Its original format includes building, so players who enjoy constructing while fighting may prefer that style. Exact rules and available playlists can vary, so use the current in-game menu for what is playable now.

Want PvP without building? Try Zero Build
Zero Build is a Battle Royale format that removes building. Epic’s 2022 announcement described it as “a pure test of weapon, item, and traversal ability” and noted features including a recharging Overshield and traversal tools. Those details are from the 2022 announcement; check the current playlist for season-specific rules and availability. See Epic’s Zero Build announcement.

Choose Save the World for cooperative PvE
Save the World is a campaign built around working together against monster hordes rather than competing against other players. Missions involve defending objectives, gathering resources, crafting weapons, and building defensive structures such as trap tunnels and fortresses. If you prefer preparation, team coordination, and progression between missions, this is the stronger fit.

Heroes and play style
Epic identifies four hero classes: Soldiers, Ninjas, Outlanders, and Constructors. You build hero loadouts as part of progression, giving the mode a character-development layer alongside its missions. You can play alone or with as many as three friends.
Check device support before choosing Save the World
Epic’s current Save the World overview lists PC, PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch 2, GeForce Now, and Amazon Luna. It excludes smartphones and tablets, including through cloud gaming, as well as the original Nintendo Switch. Consult Epic’s device and mode overview for current eligibility.

Epic announced on March 11, 2026 that Save the World would become free to play on April 16, 2026, and said new purchases would pause starting March 11 at 8 PM ET in preparation. The announcement also described Superchargers, Vouchers, and Gold for current players. It says Founders continue earning V-Bucks through specified activities: Daily Quests, Mission Alerts, Storm Shield Defense Missions, and existing Challenges. It does not say that every new player earns V-Bucks. See Epic’s announcement for the access change.

- An Epic Games account is required to redeem an Epic Games Store Card code
- If playing on a console platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch or Mobile) you need to link your Epic Games account to that gaming platform (one time) to redeem your gift card code
- The 16 digit code on the back of the card WILL NOT work if redeemed directly through your gaming platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch, Mobile, etc.)
- Note: Nintendo devices do not support Fortnite Shared Wallet, so V-Bucks purchased using your account balance will not show up on your Nintendo device. However, if you purchase items in the web Item Shop — or another platform where you play Fortnite — those items will be available in your Locker across all platforms.
