If you forgot the password for a WD external drive protected with WD Security, Western Digital does not provide a password-reset or data-access bypass. If you need the files, do not erase the drive. WD’s supported way to make the hardware usable again is to erase and format it, which permanently deletes its contents.
Can you unlock a WD drive without the password?
No—not through a reset option offered by WD. WD says the password is used to lock and unlock the drive, and support cannot recover a forgotten password. WD Security uses 256-bit AES encryption, according to Western Digital’s forgotten-password guidance; that page states, “There is no "forgot password" option to reset the password.”

That means an erase is not a way to recover or decrypt the files. It only makes the drive reusable after the data has been sacrificed.
Before deciding, try only checks that could help you remember or rule out a drive problem
- Try the password you believe was set, taking care with capitalization and keyboard layout. If you entered a password hint when setting up WD Security, use it to jog your memory.
- Safely disconnect the drive, reconnect it, and try again. If an invalid-password message persists, avoid making endless guesses.
- Check whether the drive is detected reliably and whether there are signs of a drive, file-system, or media error. WD notes that those issues can also prevent access; its troubleshooting guidance recommends reconnecting and testing the drive.
These steps can help identify a connection or drive fault, but they do not reset an unknown password or recover encrypted data.

If the files matter
Stop before selecting any erase, format, or initialize option. WD warns that erasing cannot be undone and all data on the drive will be lost. Its support guidance says technical support has no alternate way to access the contents without the password.
WD refers customers to independent data-recovery partners, but its official guidance does not establish that a partner can decrypt a WD Security-protected drive without the original password. Do not treat a paid service as a guaranteed bypass.

If you accept permanent data loss
WD’s documented route to reuse a drive when its password is forgotten is to erase and format it with WD Drive Utilities. Afterward, WD Security can be used to set a new password. Follow WD’s current instructions for your exact drive and computer, and keep the utility open until the erase operation finishes. See WD’s erase instructions and WD Drive Utilities information.

Read the confirmation screen carefully: erase and format destroy the existing contents. If you are unsure whether you can afford that loss, cancel and leave the drive unchanged.

Confirm your model and computer are supported
WD Security is intended for supported WD external-storage models; it does not work with every WD drive, drives from other manufacturers, or models that were not set up for WD Security. WD also describes drives made before 2009 as unsupported. Its exclusions include selected easystore, Elements, My Passport Wireless, My Passport Pro, and My Book models. Check the label on your drive against WD’s model compatibility list, Answer ID 2158 before following software steps.
WD’s guide, updated April 20, 2026, lists Windows 11 and macOS 26 Tahoe, macOS 15 Sequoia, and macOS 14 Sonoma for WD Security. It says ARM processors are unsupported and that Apple-silicon Macs need Rosetta 2. These software requirements do not guarantee that every listed drive model works with every listed operating-system version; verify the exact model and current guidance on WD’s software page.

Use the right WD utility
WD Security handles password protection and unlocking when the correct password is known. WD Drive Utilities provides diagnostics and erase/format functions. The latter’s erase option is for reuse, not recovery; using it removes the contents rather than opening them.
