Samsung says supported Galaxy models running One UI 6.1 or later retain the former lock for 72 hours. If that option is unavailable, the recovery routes described here erase the phone, and Google’s Factory Reset Protection may still require the Google account previously registered on it.
Try the previous screen lock first
Samsung’s previous-lock recovery is the only route in this guide that may restore access without a factory reset. It applies to supported Galaxy models running One UI 6.1 or later, when the lock was changed within the preceding 72 hours. During that window, the prior PIN, password, or pattern is retained; Samsung says the previous method can be used once per lock type.

- After at least five unsuccessful unlock attempts, look for the “Forgot PIN/Password/Pattern” option. The wording depends on which lock type you use.
- Tap the matching option and enter the former PIN, password, or pattern when prompted.
- Enter carefully: Samsung warns that three incorrect entries of the previous lock stop further attempts in this recovery flow. Follow the screen’s instructions if labels differ on your model or software version.
Samsung describes this feature in its Galaxy forgotten-PIN, pattern, or password guide, last updated July 10, 2026. Samsung says the old lock is stored for 72 hours after a change and then deleted.
If that option is missing, choose between remote erase and reset
If you cannot use the previous lock, Samsung’s and Google’s documented recovery options erase the phone. Neither is a way to unlock the screen while keeping local files intact. Treat data stored only on the phone as at risk; a backup may allow some information to be restored later.

Erase through SmartThings Find
Samsung’s SmartThings Find “Erase data” action permanently deletes device data. For immediate remote action, the phone needs to meet Samsung’s stated requirements, including power, a stable network connection, an added Samsung account, and remote controls enabled. If the phone is offline, the erase is applied when it next comes online. This is different from locating or locking a lost device: remote erase resets the phone, not the forgotten screen lock while preserving files. Reset using the model-specific instructions
If remote erase is unavailable and you accept data deletion, follow Samsung’s reset instructions for your exact Galaxy model. Button sequences and screens can vary by model, software, and region, so use the relevant country’s support page rather than relying on a generic sequence. Samsung’s factory-reset guide explains that a reset removes personal data and that Google Factory Reset Protection (FRP) may require the Google account previously registered on the phone during setup.

Check account access before erasing
A factory reset does not bypass ownership checks. Google says an erased phone must be set up again with the Google account password; Samsung says its own account credentials may also be required in some Samsung reset flows. If you are unsure which accounts are linked, recover access to them before erasing so you do not reach the setup screen unable to verify ownership.
Google’s Android device unlock guidance says a phone that cannot be unlocked must be erased and set up again, either through remote erase or the manufacturer’s button-reset procedure. Google also advises waiting 24 hours before a factory reset if you recently changed your Google Account password. That timing advice concerns Google’s password change; it is separate from Samsung’s 72-hour previous-screen-lock feature.

Choose a route based on what you still have

When to contact Samsung support
Samsung recommends service-center help for factory-reset assistance or suspected device problems. Contact Samsung through its support service if the reset instructions do not fit your model or account verification fails. Bring proof of ownership if requested and be prepared to verify the accounts linked to the phone. Service assistance is not a promise that encrypted local data can be recovered.

What not to expect
- Remote erase is not a screen-unlock tool that preserves files; it deletes device data.
- A reset is not a way around Google FRP or Samsung account checks.
- Generic bypass software or devices are not an official recovery path, and a replacement phone does not unlock the existing one.
