Your better choice depends on the exact plan you need, its included features, and the price and renewal terms available in your country.
What do the independent test results show?
AV-TEST: a tie in its Windows test
AV-TEST tested Bitdefender Total Security 27.0 and Norton 360 26.4/26.5 in its May–June 2026 home-user test for Windows. Both scored 6/6 in protection, 6/6 in performance and 6/6 in usability, for 18/18 points overall. The lab used current publicly available versions, default settings and realistic test scenarios. This is a tie in that test—not proof that the products perform identically on every operating system or against every threat. AV-TEST’s Windows home-user results describe the test and scoring.

AV-Comparatives: different product tiers, limited interpretation
AV-Comparatives’ February–May 2026 Real-World Protection Test included Bitdefender Total Security and Norton Antivirus Plus among 20 consumer security programs. Bitdefender’s comparison reports detection rates of 99.5% for Bitdefender and 99.3% for Norton in that test. Those percentages are reported by Bitdefender, an interested vendor; they should not be read as proof of a lasting or broadly applicable advantage. These are not identical tiers: the AV-Comparatives real-world test paired Bitdefender Total Security with Norton Antivirus Plus, while the feature comparison above concerns Norton 360 Deluxe. Don’t treat either set of findings as a direct verdict on every product in each brand’s range. - Consider Norton 360 Deluxe if you want the cited bundle of cloud backup, dark web monitoring and deepfake protection.
- Consider Bitdefender Total Security if its cited scam protection and breach detection fit your needs.
- If your main requirement is antivirus protection, compare lower tiers as well; don’t pay for bundled tools you will not use.

Check the current offer, renewal amount, billing period, device coverage and cancellation terms in your country before buying. Regional prices can tell a different story. AV-Comparatives’ 2025 consumer summary used prices observed on vendor sites in Austria in December 2025, including tax, and distinguished discounted first-year prices from renewals. Will one slow down your computer less?
The AV-TEST May–June 2026 Windows test gave both products 6/6 for performance. That score is useful within the lab’s test conditions, but it does not predict the experience on every PC.
AV-Comparatives’ April 2026 performance report tested specified 64-bit product versions on Windows 11: Bitdefender Total Security 27.0 and Norton Antivirus Plus 26.3. Its tasks included file copying, archiving, application installation and launch, downloads, browsing and benchmarking. The lab cautions that results indicate impact only in its particular tests and recommends considering your own computer. What should you check before choosing?
- Protection evidence: Note the test date, operating system and exact product version; don’t turn one lab result into a universal ranking.
- Bundle fit: Match the plan’s backup, identity, scam-protection or parental tools to what you will actually use.
- Devices and platforms: Confirm device count and support for your operating systems on the plan page. The cited AV-TEST result is for Windows, not a cross-platform comparison.
- Limits: Check VPN data allowances and backup capacity in the exact plan and region.
- Total cost: Compare the price after the initial term as well as the introductory offer, using the checkout details for your country.
- Performance: Treat lab results as results for the tested versions and tasks, not a guarantee about your hardware.
Verdict: which should you choose?
For Windows protection, the cited AV-TEST results do not separate the two: each received the maximum scores. Choose by the specific plan’s useful extras, device and platform support, VPN or backup limits, and current renewal price—not by assuming one brand wins every comparison. The available evidence supports a conditional choice, not a universal winner.
