If you forgot your Samsung Galaxy pattern, first check whether you changed it within the last 72 hours and the phone runs One UI 6.1 or later. On eligible models, Samsung may let you enter your previous screen lock once to set a new one without erasing the phone. If that option is unavailable, the official recovery routes described by Samsung and Google erase local data; they do not remotely unlock the phone while preserving its contents.
Before you try another pattern
Avoid repeated guesses. Samsung says the previous-lock recovery prompt can appear after five or more failed attempts, but its recovery flow permits only three incorrect entries of the previous lock. Try only a pattern you have a reasonable basis to remember, and do not treat the recovery prompt as unlimited.

Before choosing an erase option, make sure you can sign in to the Google account previously used on the phone and, if applicable, the Samsung account associated with it. After a reset, account verification may be required to set up the device.

Samsung documents a no-reset recovery path for eligible Galaxy models running One UI 6.1 or later when the screen lock was changed within the previous 72 hours. The phone retains the previous lock for that period. This option is available once per lock type; the previous-lock data is deleted after it is used.

- On the lock screen, after the recovery option appears, tap Forgot PIN/Password/Pattern or the equivalent wording shown on your device.
- Enter the previous pattern, PIN, or password—not the current one you forgot.
- If accepted, follow the prompts to set a new screen lock.
The option may be missing if the phone is not on a supported version, the lock was changed more than 72 hours ago, or the recovery flow is otherwise ineligible. Samsung’s instructions are for supported models, not every Galaxy: Samsung India’s screen-lock recovery guidance.
If previous-lock recovery is unavailable, choose an erase route
Samsung’s documented remote recovery path uses its device-finding service to erase the phone. Google likewise directs people who cannot unlock an Android phone to erase it and set it up again. A remote erase is a factory reset, not a way to remove the pattern while keeping photos and files stored on the handset.

Samsung remote erase
Samsung’s cited guidance in India and Korea describes an erase or factory reset through its device-finding service. The Galaxy must be linked to the Samsung account used to issue the action and online for the erase to proceed. The menu and service name can vary by market; consult the relevant Samsung instructions, such as Samsung India’s recovery page or Samsung Korea’s remote-reset guidance. Samsung says the reset deletes the phone’s stored data.

Google Find Hub erase
Google’s remote erase has its own prerequisites: the Galaxy must have power, be online over Wi-Fi or mobile data, be signed in to a Google Account, have Find Hub enabled, and be visible on Google Play. If one of those conditions is not met, the remote erase may not be available. See Google’s guidance for a locked Android device.

Button-based factory reset
Google directs users to the manufacturer for button-reset steps. Samsung’s button combinations vary by model, and some listed Samsung models require a USB connection to a computer before opening recovery. Do not rely on a universal button sequence: find the instructions for your exact Galaxy model and country through Samsung UK’s reset guidance or the appropriate local Samsung support site.
A button reset erases the phone. Google Factory Reset Protection may then ask for the Google account previously used on the device. If you do not know that account’s password, recover it before resetting. Samsung UK warns that a recently changed Google password may take time to work during device setup.

What happens to your data and backups?
A factory reset permanently removes data stored on the phone. A reset cannot recover photos, files, or other information that existed only on the handset. Data backed up to a Google Account may be restorable during setup, but Google says restoration depends on knowing the PIN or pattern that was in use when the backup was made, as well as access to the relevant account. Samsung also recommends backing up before a reset, but that is not an available step if the phone is locked and no remote backup exists.
When to contact Samsung support
Use official Samsung support for your country if you cannot verify the account, cannot confirm ownership, or suspect a hardware problem. Samsung UK describes authorized service help for some locked-device or Factory Reset Protection cases, with proof of purchase; Samsung Korea describes in-person support requiring government ID and ownership evidence. Requirements differ by market, and service staff should not be assumed able to recover encrypted data stored only on the phone. What Google’s old “Forgot pattern” instructions cover
Google’s account-based “Forgot pattern” instructions apply to Android 4.4 or lower. They are not a general unlock method for modern Galaxy phones. For a current device, check Samsung’s previous-lock recovery eligibility first; otherwise, expect an erase and confirm account access before proceeding.
