A foldable phone makes sense if you will regularly use its larger inner screen for reading, documents, multitasking, or video. A regular phone is usually the better fit if you value a lighter carry, a single rigid display, and simpler handling more than a screen that expands. The right choice depends on the exact models and how you use your phone—not on a blanket claim that one design is always better.
Foldable phone vs. regular phone: which is better?
Neither design wins for everyone. A book-style foldable combines a phone-sized cover screen with a larger display inside; a conventional slab phone keeps one rigid screen. That trade-off is useful when the opened screen solves a recurring need, but less compelling if you would rarely unfold it.

For a concrete comparison, Samsung’s 2025 Galaxy Z Fold7 has an 8.0-inch main display and a 6.5-inch cover display. Apple’s 2025 iPhone 17 has a 6.3-inch display. These are examples, not category-wide specifications: compare the models you are actually considering.

Screen space for reading and multitasking
The Fold7’s inner 8.0-inch display offers more room for long documents, spreadsheets, two apps side by side, or video than its 6.5-inch cover screen. That larger canvas is the main practical reason to choose a book-style foldable. If most of your use is messaging, browsing, calls, and quick app checks, a conventional screen may already be sufficient.

Weight and pocket comfort
Samsung lists the Galaxy Z Fold7 at 215 g and 8.9 mm thick when folded. Apple lists the iPhone 17 at 177 g and 7.95 mm thick. In this particular comparison, the Fold7 weighs 38 g more and is thicker; the figures do not establish how every foldable compares with every regular phone. Consider how the device feels in your pocket and hand, especially if you carry it all day.
Handling and care
A foldable adds a hinge and a flexible inner display, so its care instructions matter. Samsung advises keeping particles away from the device, not folding it with objects between the screens, and avoiding excessive force when opening or closing it. A regular phone avoids the folding hinge, though it still needs model-appropriate care.
Are foldable phones more fragile?
The available specifications and care guidance do not establish a category-wide failure rate or prove that every foldable is less durable than every slab phone. They do show that foldables have specific handling considerations, and water and dust ratings vary by model. A rating is not a promise that a phone is indestructible.

Samsung lists the Galaxy Z Fold7 as IP48 and says it is not advised for beach or pool use. Samsung’s care guidance also says foldable phones are not dust resistant and warns users to keep particles from entering the device. Apple lists iPhone 17 as IP68 under IEC 60529, with a maximum depth of 6 m for up to 30 minutes under laboratory conditions. Apple cautions that water resistance is not permanent and says liquid damage is not covered under warranty. Check the exact local model’s documentation and warranty terms before buying.
Are foldable phones worth it?
A foldable is worth considering when you can name regular tasks that benefit from its inner screen and expect to use that screen often. It is a weaker value proposition if the larger display would be an occasional novelty while you still carry the added weight and take on model-specific care questions.
- Consider a foldable if you often read long documents, review spreadsheets, use two apps at once, or watch video on a larger display, and you are comfortable with its weight and handling guidance.
- Consider a regular phone if you prefer a lighter, thinner device, one rigid display, straightforward handling, or the apps and services you already use in that ecosystem.
Before choosing a specific model, compare its local price, dimensions, warranty and repair terms, water and dust instructions, software support period, carrier compatibility, and case options. A case should not be assumed to protect a foldable’s inner screen or hinge from all damage.

Do foldable phones have good battery life?
Battery capacity and real-world endurance are different measures. Samsung lists a typical 4,400 mAh battery for the Galaxy Z Fold7, but that capacity alone does not show how long it lasts in your use. The available figures do not provide a like-for-like independent battery-life comparison with the iPhone 17. Look for tests of the exact models under comparable conditions rather than inferring endurance from capacity or screen size.
