A book-style foldable is better value when you will regularly use its large inner screen for reading, multitasking, video, or games. If you mostly want a dependable everyday phone, longer tested battery life, or stronger zoom, a conventional flagship such as the Galaxy S26 Ultra is usually the more sensible buy. Compare current prices in your market and be honest about how often you would use the bigger screen.
What counts as better value?
Price alone does not settle the comparison. A foldable earns its premium only if the inner display does useful work for you—perhaps replacing occasional tablet use or making side-by-side tasks practical. If the phone’s large screen would be a novelty rather than a regular tool, the added cost is harder to justify.

Reading and long-form content
Samsung describes the Fold8’s 4:3 inner display as suited to reading and long-form content. Its cover display is intended for routine messaging, browsing, and short video. That gives the Fold two distinct ways to use it: a conventional phone-sized screen for quick tasks and a broader canvas when you open it. Samsung’s Fold8 use-case description

Multitasking, with an app-layout caveat
Tom’s Guide says the Fold8 can display up to three apps at once. That can help when you want to refer to one app while working in another, but not every app becomes a genuine tablet-style interface: the review notes that some feel like stretched phone layouts. The practical benefit therefore depends on the apps you use, not just the screen size. Tom’s Guide’s Fold8 review

The Fold8 Ultra recorded 14 hours 33 minutes, while the Motorola Razr Fold recorded 14 hours 44 minutes. The S26 Ultra’s result gives it a clear advantage over the Fold8 in this particular test. Results for the Fold8 Ultra and Razr Fold show that endurance varies between foldable models, so do not assume every foldable performs the same way. Motorola lists a 6,000mAh battery for the Razr Fold, but capacity by itself does not establish real-world endurance. Motorola Razr Fold specifications
Is a foldable more fragile?
IP ratings describe defined ingress-protection characteristics; they do not establish how likely a phone is to suffer hinge or screen failure over years of use. Tom’s Guide reports the Galaxy Z Fold8 as IP48 and the Galaxy S26 Ultra as IP68, and explains that the Fold8 rating covers water immersion but not dust resistance. The review also names the Pixel 10 Pro Fold and Motorola Razr Fold as IP68 models. Tom’s Guide’s durability comparison

The sources here do not provide comparable long-term failure rates or repair-cost data for foldables and conventional flagships. Samsung says One UI 9 adds a Warranty and care hub for Care+ enrollment, warranty information, self-diagnostics, repair requests, and remote support. That describes a route to support, not the coverage, deductibles, exclusions, turnaround, or total cost you will get in a particular market. Check the terms for your exact model and location. Motorola’s UK product page says the Razr Fold’s water and dust resistance was tested to IP49 in controlled laboratory conditions. It also lists limits, including fresh-water conditions and reduced resistance through normal wear. Those are manufacturer statements specific to that model; consult the local product and warranty terms before comparing it with another phone. Motorola UK Razr Fold product page

Tom’s Guide’s comparison of these two Ultra models reports an 8-inch main screen for the Fold8 Ultra and a 6.9-inch display for the S26 Ultra. Both use the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy processor. The reviewer identifies the S26 Ultra as having the zoom advantage and the Fold8 Ultra as offering the larger multitasking screen. Reported weights are about 215g and 214g, respectively—a negligible difference in this specific comparison, not a general rule about foldables. Tom’s Guide’s Fold8 Ultra–S26 Ultra comparison
| Consideration | Book-style foldable | Conventional flagship |
|---|---|---|
| Screen use | Expands into a larger canvas for reading, video, and side-by-side apps. | Offers a familiar phone display without a folding-screen premium. |
| Purchase value | Can combine a phone and a larger screen in one device if you use both formats regularly. | Often easier to justify if large-screen use would be occasional. |
| Battery evidence | Performance varies by model; Fold8 results were lower than S26 Ultra’s in Tom’s Guide’s cited 5G test. | S26 Ultra outlasted Fold8 in that test; this is not a guarantee of personal daily runtime. |
| Dust and water | Ratings differ by model. Fold8 is reported as IP48; check the exact device. | S26 Ultra is reported as IP68 in the cited comparison. |
| Camera priorities | Compare the exact model; a foldable’s larger screen does not itself establish camera performance. | S26 Ultra had stronger zoom than Fold8 Ultra in Tom’s Guide’s comparison. |
| Ownership risk | Support pathways exist, but comparative lifetime failure rates and repair costs are not established here. | Comparable lifetime failure-rate and repair-cost data are also not established here. |
Which should you choose?
Choose a foldable if the inner screen will earn its keep
- You expect to read, watch, play, or work on the larger display routinely.
- Side-by-side apps would improve tasks you actually do, and your key apps handle the expanded layout well.
- You are comfortable paying the current local price for that added screen utility.
Choose a conventional flagship if everyday basics matter more
- You mostly use your phone for quick tasks and would open a foldable screen only occasionally.
- Longer endurance is a priority; in Tom’s Guide’s cited 5G web test, the S26 Ultra lasted longer than the Fold8.
- You value the S26 Ultra’s zoom advantage over the Fold8 Ultra or prefer the reported IP68 rating to the Fold8’s IP48 rating.
For either choice, compare the exact storage configuration, local selling price, warranty, and repair terms before buying. A manufacturer support hub is useful to know about, but it does not tell you what a repair or coverage will cost in your market.
