Foldable phones add a moving hinge and a flexible inner display to a phone’s usual wear points. A visible crease is normal on many models and does not, by itself, mean the screen is failing. Fold-count figures describe manufacturer tests, not a guaranteed lifespan, while water- and dust-resistance ratings apply only to specified test conditions. The practical approach is to check guidance for your exact model, keep grit away from its hinge and inner screen, and treat a case as exterior protection—not as a fix for every durability risk.
What makes a foldable phone different to maintain?
A foldable’s outer body still faces familiar risks such as drops and scratches. Its inner screen also bends repeatedly at a designed fold area, and its hinge is a moving assembly. The design, care instructions and repair options vary by model, so a claim about one phone should not be generalized to every foldable.

For a useful comparison, look at five things for each exact model: the source and meaning of its fold-cycle claim; screen and crease behavior; protector policy; the conditions behind its ingress rating; and local repair availability and pricing. Do fold-count claims predict how long a hinge will last?
Samsung’s UK buying guide says Galaxy Z Fold7 and Galaxy Z Flip7 are certified for up to 200,000 folds. This is a manufacturer-published certification figure, not an independent comparison or a promise that every device will reach that count or last a fixed number of years. Samsung says the Galaxy Z Fold7 uses a restructured Armor FlexHinge with a multi-rail design intended to distribute stress and reduce visible creasing. Is a crease in the inner screen a sign of damage?
Not by itself. The inner display bends at a designed fold area, and crease visibility or feel varies with the model and viewing conditions. In a hands-on review, TechRadar described the Galaxy Z Fold7 crease as minimal but visible at some angles and barely perceptible to touch. That is an observation about that device, not a durability test or a guarantee that every foldable’s crease will look the same.

Pay attention to changes in screen behavior or appearance rather than treating the crease alone as a failure diagnosis. If something changes or concerns you, check the manufacturer’s support guidance for the exact model.

Samsung says its foldables’ main screen comes with a specially designed, pre-installed protector. Follow the model-specific support instructions if it is damaged or lifting, and use an appropriate service when advised. The guidance does not establish that a generic protector will fit or that removing the factory protector yourself is safe for every model. Samsung’s foldable care guidance covers its devices.

What do water and dust ratings actually mean?
An IP rating is a classification tied to defined test conditions, not permission for unrestricted exposure. For the Galaxy Z Fold7, Samsung lists an IP48 rating. Its environmental report describes testing under IEC 60529, including controlled laboratory submersion in freshwater up to 1.5 metres for up to 30 minutes. Samsung also warns that resistance is not permanent and may diminish through normal wear and tear. Those figures do not establish protection from salt water, other liquids, high-pressure jets, a damaged device or dusty conditions. See the Galaxy Z Fold7 Product Environmental Report.
Samsung Support puts the wear caveat plainly: “Water resistance of device is not permanent and may diminish over time because of normal wear and tear.” That warning is especially relevant to a device with moving parts; a rating should not be treated as immunity from liquid exposure.

Keep dust and sand away from the hinge and inner display
Motorola’s hardware guidance for Razr Fold says resistance was tested under controlled laboratory conditions and decreases with normal wear. It advises avoiding dust exposure because dust can reduce hinge life and damage the display. Separately, TechRadar’s hands-on Fold7 review recommends keeping the phone away from dust and sand despite its IP48 rating. The review is practical advice, not a laboratory certification.
How can you reduce avoidable wear?
- Follow the manual and support guidance for your exact model, including instructions for cleaning the screen and handling its protector.
- Keep sand and fine debris away from the hinge and inner display.
- Do not treat a fold-count claim as a forecast of your own phone’s lifespan.
- Interpret an ingress rating only within its stated test conditions; do not assume it covers every liquid, pressure or dusty environment.
- Before buying, check screen and hinge repair pricing, eligibility and any care-plan terms in your country.
A compatible case can help protect exterior surfaces, but it does not establish protection for the inner screen or hinge, improve the phone’s IP rating or guarantee survival in a drop. Check compatibility with the precise phone model and case revision.

What should you check before buying a foldable?
Ask about the costs and terms that affect ownership, not just the headline fold count. Repair availability and price depend on the phone model, country, eligibility and service terms. Samsung says same-day screen repair may be available for eligible devices in select areas; confirm current availability and conditions for your location rather than assuming the service applies to every owner.
