Shared layouts can remain mounted while the route content changes, leaving focus on the link or control used to navigate. If the transition represents a new page context, your application should choose a meaningful destination and move focus there once that content is ready. For modal UI, use a native <dialog> opened with showModal() when you want the browser’s modal behavior; inert is for making an inactive region unavailable, not a visual treatment.
Why focus can stay on the old link after a route change
The App Router preserves shared layouts between pages. Next.js says layouts preserve state, remain interactive, and do not rerender during navigation. As a result, a navigation can replace route content without remounting persistent interface elements or resetting the browser’s focus location. The usePathname hook exposes the current pathname in a Client Component, but observing a route change is not the same as automatically choosing a new focus target.

Next.js’s documentation does not prescribe a universal page-heading focus policy. Treat focus as part of the navigation result when the user has entered a new page context: identify the destination’s meaningful start, wait until it exists, and then focus it. A heading or main-content start can be made programmatically focusable with tabIndex={-1}. This is an application pattern informed by route-observation APIs and focus-order guidance, not a Next.js requirement. The relevant W3C technique, H102, is an example technique, not a mandatory implementation.

Choose the destination based on the transition
- Full page-context change: focus a heading or main landmark that identifies the new content.
- Query-only update, filter, tab, or pagination: do not assume it should behave like a new page. Keep focus in place when that best supports the interaction, or move it only when the updated result requires it.
- URL-backed modal: follow the dialog’s focus behavior rather than also triggering a competing page-heading focus.
- In-page state update: choose focus behavior for that component interaction; a URL change alone does not determine the right target.
Observe pathname and query changes deliberately
For pathname-sensitive logic, place a small client-side observer in a persistent layout and respond to changes from usePathname(). When query parameters matter, Next.js documents composing it with useSearchParams(). Avoid firing two overlapping focus effects for the same transition unless that duplication is intentional. Ordinary navigation should generally use <Link>; Next.js notes that navigation scrolls to the top by default in its useRouter documentation.

- INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
- THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors

Focus can itself scroll the page, so verify the actual interaction with the framework’s navigation and browser scroll behavior. Do not assume focus movement, scroll-to-top, and history restoration will always produce the desired visible result together.
Account for App Router edge cases
usePathname()is a Client Component hook. WithcacheComponents, a dynamic route parameter can require a Suspense boundary around the component that reads the pathname unless static params make that unnecessary.- With rewrites or Proxy, the pre-rendered pathname can differ from the browser-visible pathname and cause a hydration mismatch. Isolate client-dependent display and use a stable server fallback where needed.
- When Cache Components are enabled, route-level React Activity can preserve hidden UI state. A dialog’s
isDialogOpenvalue may remaintruewhen its route becomes hidden and visible again. An effect keyed only to that unchanged boolean will not rerun to set focus. Make focus initialization respond to the actual navigation or activation event; the Next.js preserving UI state guide demonstrates deriving dialog state from a URL search parameter.
What the inert attribute does
inert is a Boolean HTML global attribute. It makes an element and its flat-tree descendants unavailable for interaction: they cannot receive focus or clicks, do not fire focus or click events, leave the sequential tab order and accessibility tree, are excluded from browser find-in-page, and cannot be edited. MDN describes the attribute as widely available across browsers since April 2023. See MDN’s inert reference.

Inertness has no built-in visual indication. If a region is inactive, provide visible feedback too, and do not make content inert while people still need to perceive or operate it. Use disabled for an individual form control when that narrower behavior is what you need.

A modal dialog opened with showModal() escapes inertness inherited from an ancestor. Explicitly setting inert on the dialog itself can still make it inert. For a custom overlay, managing the background with inert may be part of the solution, but it does not by itself supply all the focus behavior of a native modal dialog.

What native <dialog> handles—and what it does not
Calling showModal() opens a modal dialog. The browser moves focus into it; MDN says the first nested focusable element receives focus by default. Use autofocus when a particular initial target is appropriate. If the content is rendered dynamically or no child is a suitable first target, focusing the dialog container itself may be preferable. A modal opened this way prevents interaction with the rest of the document and is exposed as modal.
By contrast, show() and an open attribute make a dialog nonmodal. They should not be treated as providing modal focus containment. Adding aria-modal="true" alone does not create modal behavior; the interface must actually manage modality and focus. See MDN’s dialog reference.

Plan initial focus and dismissal
Choose initial focus to suit the dialog’s purpose. The WAI-ARIA Authoring Practices Guide’s modal dialog pattern describes moving focus into the dialog, keeping it there while modal, and returning it to the invoker on close. For complex, structured content, a static element can be a better starting point so users can read the content in order.
Provide a visible close, cancel, or confirmation control. Escape dismisses a dialog opened with showModal() by default, but a visible control also supports people who do not know or cannot use that keyboard action. On dismissal, return focus to the opener if it still exists and is appropriate. If navigation removed the invoking control, send focus to a logical destination in the new context instead.

W3C’s H102 technique relates native modal dialogs to WCAG 2.2 Success Criterion 2.4.3, Focus Order, including dynamically changed pages. W3C states that techniques are examples and are not required for WCAG conformance. Using <dialog> alone therefore does not establish conformance.
Quick Recap
Choose a focus strategy for the interaction
| Interaction | Focus destination | Background behavior | Key implementation concern |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full route/page-context change | Meaningful heading or main-content start | Shared layout may remain active while route content changes | Observe the route and focus the destination after it exists; coordinate with scrolling. |
| Query, filter, tab, or pagination update | Often keep focus on the initiating control; move it only when the interaction calls for it | Usually remains interactive | Do not treat every URL update as a new page. |
Native modal dialog using showModal() |
First suitable focusable child, an intentional autofocus target, or the dialog/static content |
Browser prevents interaction with the rest of the document | Supply a visible dismissal path and a logical focus return target. |
Nonmodal dialog using show() or open |
Chosen for the nonmodal interaction | Document remains nonmodal | Do not assume modal focus containment. |
| Custom overlay | Chosen and managed by the application | May require an explicit inert strategy |
Manage focus and visible inactive-state feedback; inert alone is not a complete modal pattern. |
