Flow-electrode capacitive deionization (FCDI) has removed more than 98% of salt from real seawater in a reported 2025 experiment, and newer designs are testing ways to improve performance and scale. But these results come from research systems, not routine commercial seawater plants. FCDI is a plausible technology to develop for larger desalination systems; the evidence does not yet show that it is a proven alternative to established seawater treatment.

How flow-electrode desalination works

FCDI adapts capacitive deionization, using ion-exchange membranes and a circulating slurry of conductive particles, commonly carbon-based. An applied electric field moves ions from the saline feed across the membranes into the flowing electrode streams. The feed loses salt while the slurry carries away the accumulated ionic charge.

Unlike fixed electrodes, the particle electrodes can circulate through the system. Researchers are exploring this arrangement to support continuous treatment and flexible handling of the charged slurry and concentrated salt streams. Actual performance depends on factors including membrane layout, feed salinity, voltage, flow rate, and slurry operation. For an overview of the technology and its research applications, see the 2021 review in Environmental Science & Technology.

What experiments have shown with real seawater

Multistage FCDI: high removal in a 2025 study

A 2025 multistage study used graded electric fields and electrode salinity to improve treatment across stages. Under its reported optimized conditions, it achieved more than 98% salt removal from real seawater, with specific energy consumption of 21.3–22.1 kWh/m³ and a pH around 8.5. The paper also reports removal above 99% in tested multistage configurations and lower energy use than single-stage operation. These figures describe that study’s configurations and conditions, not a guaranteed result for other seawater or plant designs. Read the 2025 study.

Emergency light allows you to provide lighting at night and filter water outdoors easily.

All-flow-channel design: a 2026 experiment

A September 2026 study circulated 15 wt.% activated-carbon slurry through solution channels as well as the electrode chambers, aiming to reduce resistance and improve ion transport. Against standard FCDI under the study’s test conditions, the authors reported a 13.3% improvement in salt-removal rate and a 14.2% improvement in energy-normalized salt removal. The paper also reports stable pH and sustained performance in real-seawater experiments, including 72-hour cyclic tests. That duration is useful experimental evidence, but it is not long-term field validation. Read the 2026 study.

How far scale-up has actually gone

Researchers have expanded FCDI beyond small laboratory cells, but larger membrane area or a stack of modules is not the same as a full-scale seawater plant. The studies below report different feed waters, designs, and measures, so their results should not be treated as a direct performance ranking.

Study and system Reported result What the result does—and does not—show
2019 membrane-stack study Reported energy efficiency of 13.8–20.2% and productivity above 100 L·m⁻²·h⁻¹. The cited desalting example used brackish feed, not seawater. The study found that adding membrane pairs could reduce current efficiency, likely as electrodialysis effects became more important.
2020 membrane-current-collector study Reported an average salt-removal rate of 0.3–0.44 µmol/(cm²·min) for its module. The authors described lower infrastructure investment, device size, and energy cost for their design. These are study findings, not independently established commercial savings.
2024 pilot-scale-oriented study Built modules with a 320 cm² membrane cross-section and a 20-unit membrane-electrode assembly stack. Membrane area was 260 times that of a typical lab setup; the reported specific salt-transfer rate was 1.1 µmol/(min·cm²). The authors framed the work as a method for moving toward pilot-scale assessment and industrially relevant comparison. It does not demonstrate a full-scale operating plant.

What remains uncertain before commercial use

High salt removal in a research experiment does not, by itself, establish the cost, reliability, or output of a desalination plant. Practical assessment has to account for sustained operation and the full treatment system, not just the membrane cell.

  • Comparable energy use: Energy figures need the same boundaries, including whether pumping, pretreatment, and concentrate handling are counted. Feed salinity, product-water target, recovery, and throughput also have to match before comparing technologies.
  • System operation: Slurry circulation and stability, membrane-stack effects, fouling or clogging, and concentrate management can affect dependable performance.
  • Capital cost and scale-up: Building a larger stack is an important step, but it does not establish the cost or operating performance of a plant. A 2021 review identifies operating and capital costs, scale-up, and commercialization as unresolved challenges. The review discusses these barriers.

Does FCDI outperform reverse osmosis?

The available evidence does not establish that FCDI commercially outperforms reverse osmosis for seawater desalination. A 2024 energetic-comparison study models FCDI against reverse-osmosis plant data and discusses possible seawater applicability after scale-up; it is a modeling assessment, not proof of commercial superiority. A fair comparison would match source-water salinity, product-water quality, recovery, throughput, energy boundaries, pretreatment, concentrate handling, and demonstrated operating scale. What the evidence supports

FCDI has demonstrated substantial salt removal from real seawater in research experiments, while membrane stacks and newer channel designs show routes researchers are exploring to expand capacity and improve transport. The reported results justify continued development, but they do not establish routine commercial-scale seawater desalination. For now, the most accurate description is a promising research pathway with scale-up, operating, and cost questions still to resolve.
