When a flight is delayed, the updates you’re owed—and any care, refund or compensation you might qualify for—depend on the route and the rules that apply. The “codec updates” in this headline is wordplay: software codecs and airline delay notices are unrelated. Here’s what the cited rules say about delay information in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and the European Union.
What counts as a flight-delay update?
Airlines may have to tell passengers about changes to a flight’s status, but the timing and trigger differ by jurisdiction. A notice deadline is not the same thing as a promise that a flight will depart within a particular time, nor does it automatically establish a right to compensation.

The word “codec” can also refer to software that encodes or decodes audio or video. Nothing in the passenger-notification rules discussed here concerns codec software updates. IATA delay codes are a separate airline-reporting concept; the available basis for describing them here is a secondary overview, not primary IATA documentation, so they are not treated as a substitute for passenger notices or legal rights.

| Jurisdiction and source | Information trigger or interval | Where or how information is provided | Other remedies covered here |
|---|---|---|---|
| United States — 14 CFR § 259.8, U.S. Department of Transportation | For a qualifying delay of at least 30 minutes occurring within seven calendar days of the planned flight date, covered carriers must provide specified status information within 30 minutes after becoming aware of the change. | At the gate, on the carrier’s website and through its telephone reservation system. If the carrier offers subscribers flight-status notifications, it must send them by the offered method the subscriber chose. Carrier-controlled displays at U.S. airports must also be updated within 30 minutes. | The cited provision concerns flight-status information; it does not establish the UK- or EU-style remedies summarized below. |
| Canada — Air Passenger Protection Regulations, section 13; government page current to 2026-09-21 | During a delay, status updates are required every 30 minutes until a new departure time is set or alternate arrangements are made. New information must be shared as soon as feasible. | Passengers must be given information about the reason for the disruption, possible compensation, any standard of treatment and recourse. | Possible compensation and standards of treatment are among the information the carrier must provide; the cited summary does not specify individual entitlement amounts. |
| United Kingdom — Civil Aviation Authority passenger guidance | The cited summary describes care after a delay of at least two hours for flights under 1,500 km, or at least three hours for flights between 1,500 km and 3,500 km. | The guidance describes care for eligible passengers; the cited summary does not state a general recurring notice interval. | Compensation may be due if arrival is more than three hours late. If the delay exceeds five hours, a passenger can choose not to travel and receive a refund, subject to eligibility and circumstances. |
| European Union — Council of the European Union passenger-rights overview | The Council says passengers could be entitled to compensation when they arrive more than three hours late, subject to applicable conditions. | The cited overview summarizes passenger rights but does not establish a general recurring delay-notice interval. | Possible compensation is €250 for flights of 1,500 km or less; €400 for intra-EU flights or flights between 1,500 km and 3,500 km; and €600 for other flights, subject to conditions. |
These are different rules, not a single worldwide standard. A departure delay may trigger information or care provisions, while the UK and EU compensation summaries turn on how late passengers arrive. Route coverage and the carrier’s circumstances also matter.

What the rules mean by jurisdiction
United States: a defined notice window for covered flights
Under the cited U.S. regulation, the 30-minute period starts when the covered carrier becomes aware of a qualifying status change. The provision applies to specified flight-status changes, including a delay of at least 30 minutes within seven calendar days of the planned flight date. It covers notices to ticketed passengers and the public, as well as updates to carrier-controlled displays at U.S. airports. It does not mean every delay of any length triggers this particular rule.
Canada: recurring updates until the plan changes
Canada’s section 13 requirement is a recurring interval: during a delay, the carrier must provide an update every 30 minutes until it sets a new departure time or makes alternate arrangements. The carrier must share new information as soon as feasible. The government’s information requirement also covers the reason for the disruption and information about possible compensation, treatment standards and recourse.

United Kingdom: care and choices depend on the delay and route
The UK Civil Aviation Authority’s guidance says UK261 may apply. Its care thresholds vary by distance: at least two hours for flights under 1,500 km and at least three hours for flights between 1,500 km and 3,500 km. The guidance also describes possible compensation when arrival is more than three hours late and a choice to abandon travel and seek a refund if the delay exceeds five hours. These are conditional rights, not automatic payments for every delayed flight; route eligibility and individual circumstances need to be checked.

The Council’s overview describes EU coverage for flights within the EU, flights departing the EU for a non-EU country, and flights arriving in the EU from a non-EU country on an EU airline. It says eligible passengers could be entitled to compensation if arrival is more than three hours late, with amounts varying by distance and route as shown in the table.

A separate Council release dated June 15, 2026 reported a Council-Parliament political agreement on stronger passenger rights, including clearer information, assistance, rerouting and compensation. The release describes an agreement; it does not by itself establish that every provision is already in force. Do not assume the agreement changes the applicable rule for a particular journey without checking the final legal text and its application date.
What to do when the departure board changes
- Save the evidence. Keep the booking confirmation and take screenshots of the departure board, airline app or messages showing the delay and any revised departure time. Note when you received each update.
- Ask for the reason and the next update. Ask the airline what caused the disruption, when it expects to provide another status update, and whether it has set a new departure time or made alternate arrangements.
- Check the route, not just the airline’s location. The rules above use different geographic scopes. For example, the EU Council overview distinguishes flights within or departing the EU from arrivals on an EU airline.
- Keep receipts if you pay for essentials. The cited UK guidance describes care rights, but eligibility and the appropriate next step depend on the circumstances. Ask the airline what assistance it will provide before spending where practical.
- Compare the remedy to the disruption. A notice obligation, care during a wait, rerouting, a refund and compensation are different things. Check the applicable regulator’s guidance and the conditions for the specific route before treating an estimated delay as a confirmed entitlement.
Why “codec updates” should not be read literally
Flight-status notices tell passengers about operational changes; codecs handle digital media encoding and decoding. Airline delay codes, meanwhile, are reporting labels rather than passenger-rights rules. The terms may sound similar in a headline, but they describe unrelated subjects. This article uses the phrase as a pun and focuses on the practical question: what information and possible remedies may apply when a flight is delayed.
