HDMI and DisplayPort are common external connections; LVDS and embedded DisplayPort (eDP) are internal panel interfaces. USB-C may carry video, but the connector by itself does not guarantee it.
External display ports and internal panel links are different
When connecting a laptop to a separate monitor, you are using an external display connection. HDMI and DisplayPort are common options for this job. Inside a laptop or television, a different interface carries the image from the display controller to the panel. LVDS and eDP are examples of internal links; they are not ordinary monitor cables. VESA also documented an Internal DisplayPort standard for links inside flat-panel TVs.

That distinction matters when identifying a port or buying a cable: an internal panel connector is not a substitute for an external video output. DisplayPort’s connection guide describes LVDS as an internal connection, while VESA’s May 10, 2010 announcement describes Internal DisplayPort as a link between a TV’s controller system-on-chip and its panel timing controller, positioned as an alternative to LVDS.

| Interface | Typical use | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| HDMI | External TVs, monitors, computers, and consumer AV equipment | Designed for connecting displays with consumer electronics, PCs, mobile, automotive, and commercial AV devices. A compatible USB-C source can also use HDMI Alt Mode to connect to an HDMI display without an adapter. |
| DisplayPort | External computer-to-monitor connections, including video over compatible USB-C | Can connect to older HDMI, DVI, or VGA inputs through adapters. The result depends on the source’s capabilities and whether signal conversion is needed. |
| USB-C with DisplayPort Alt Mode | External display output over USB-C | A compatible source can carry DisplayPort audio and video over USB-C. A dock may also provide USB data and charging, subject to the capabilities of the source and dock. |
| DVI and VGA | Older external display inputs | DisplayPort-to-DVI or HDMI adapter use may depend on DP++ support where applicable; VGA requires a separate converter. Check the exact source and adapter. |
| LVDS | Internal display electronics, including in laptop and television contexts | An internal panel link, not normally a cable for connecting an external monitor. |
| eDP / Internal DisplayPort | Internal panel connections | eDP is a VESA standard. Internal DisplayPort has also been described for links inside flat-panel TVs. |
These descriptions reflect the interfaces’ typical roles, not a guarantee that every device implements every feature. For interface-specific guidance, see the official HDMI information, DisplayPort’s FAQ and connection guide, and VESA’s Internal DisplayPort announcement.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
USB-C video depends on the device
USB-C describes a reversible connector, not a specific promise of video output. A USB-C port carries video only if the source device supports a suitable mode, such as DisplayPort Alt Mode or HDMI Alt Mode. As the DisplayPort FAQ puts it, “DisplayPort™ over USB-C™ enables the USB Type-C connector and cable to support the DisplayPort interface for audio/video (AV) transport capability.” That capability must be implemented by the device; the connector shape alone does not establish it.
Before choosing a USB-C cable, adapter, or dock, check the source device’s specifications and port markings for video support. The DisplayPort FAQ explains DisplayPort over USB-C, and the HDMI site describes HDMI Alt Mode for USB Type-C. Do not assume that an otherwise suitable-looking USB-C port outputs video.

How to choose a cable or adapter
- Identify the source output and display input. Check the laptop or other source specifications and the monitor or TV’s available inputs. Distinguish an external port from an internal panel connector.
- Confirm that the source sends video through that port. This is especially important for USB-C, where video requires support for a mode such as DisplayPort Alt Mode or HDMI Alt Mode.
- Match the connection path. If both devices have HDMI, an HDMI cable is a direct option. A compatible USB-C source and HDMI display may need a USB-C-to-HDMI adapter. Check the adapter’s direction and the conversion it performs; adapters are not automatically interchangeable in both directions.
- Check the required resolution and refresh rate. Confirm that the source, display, cable, and any adapter or dock support the combination you intend to use. Do not infer performance from connector shape alone.
- Check other features separately. Audio/video, USB data, and charging power are distinct capabilities. A dock can carry more than one, but support depends on both the dock and the connected device.
DisplayPort’s adapter guidance covers legacy HDMI, DVI, and VGA connections, including the DP++ consideration for DVI and HDMI and the need for a separate VGA converter. The HDMI information covers HDMI and USB Type-C HDMI Alt Mode.

Interface versions do not settle device compatibility
Version labels are time-sensitive and do not by themselves confirm what a particular port, cable, or display supports. The DisplayPort FAQ says DisplayPort 2.1b was announced in January 2025, superseding 2.1a. HDMI’s official specifications page describes HDMI 2.2 as its most recent update at the time reflected on that page. For exact version features, consult the current official specifications and the specifications of the devices you plan to connect.
