A curved screen may appeal if you sit close to the center and like its wraparound effect, but curvature alone does not guarantee better picture quality.
What is the difference between flat and curved TVs?
The difference is the shape of the display: a flat TV has a level screen, while a curved TV bends inward at the edges. That shape can change how the screen looks from the center seat and how reflections appear, but it is only one part of the viewing experience. Panel type and the individual TV’s viewing-angle and reflection performance also matter.

In a comparison of particular similar Samsung VA-panel TVs, RTINGS found that panel type had a greater effect on viewing angles than screen curvature, and the two examples had similar viewing-angle limitations. Which shape works better for your seating arrangement?
Choose flat for a group or flexible seating
A flat screen is the straightforward choice when several people watch from different positions, or when seats are not always centered. A curved screen’s geometry is aimed more toward a viewer in front of it; people sitting farther to the sides may find the view less consistent. RTINGS recommends flat screens for multi-person viewing.

Consider curved for a centered, closer seat
If you usually sit near the center and relatively close to the TV, you may prefer how a curved screen brings its edges toward your field of view. Whether that effect feels more immersive is a matter of preference, not a guaranteed improvement in the picture.
Does a curved TV look bigger or more immersive?
It can create a small apparent-size difference, but the effect depends on viewing distance and the specific screen. In RTINGS’ calculation for a 55-inch comparison at an assumed distance of eight feet, the flat screen covered a 28-degree field of view and the curved screen 28.42 degrees. RTINGS described the curved screen as appearing similar to a 55.8-inch screen in that setup. These figures are from a specific comparison, not a universal perceptual rule or a promise that a curved TV will look larger to every viewer.

Screen size and distance are more useful starting points than curvature when planning a room. LG USA gives 40 degrees as a cinema-style field-of-view reference and suggests estimating screen size by dividing viewing distance in inches by 1.2. How do reflections and picture quality compare?
Curvature does not automatically improve contrast, resolution, or glare control. Reflections can appear stretched across more of a curved display, and whether that looks better or worse depends on preference, room lighting, and the model’s reflection handling. Compare TVs in lighting similar to your room when possible, and check reviews or specifications for the specific models rather than assuming screen shape settles the question.

Samsung Canada describes its curved design as creating a uniform viewing distance, improved viewing angles, higher contrast, and an immersive experience. Those are manufacturer claims, not a general result established for all TVs. They should be weighed against comparative testing such as RTINGS’ finding that panel type matters more for viewing angles than curvature in its examples, and its warning that side seating can be a drawback.
What should you check before buying?
- Seating: Count the usual viewers and note how far they sit from the center of the screen.
- Distance and size: Choose a screen size for the room and main viewing distance before treating curvature as a deciding factor.
- Panel and viewing angles: Check the exact model’s performance, especially if people watch from the sides.
- Lighting: Consider windows, lamps, and how the TV handles reflections in your room.
- Placement: Curved models can be bulkier at the rear and trickier to wall-mount. Confirm the exact TV’s mount specification and whether its stand suits your furniture.
- Local options: Check current listings and prices in your region. The sources here do not establish a general price premium for curved TVs today.
Bottom line: flat or curved?
Pick a flat TV for a shared room, flexible seating, or the simplest placement. Consider a curved TV if you will usually sit centered and close, and you prefer its edge geometry after viewing it in person. In either case, compare the actual models’ viewing angles and reflection handling; shape alone is not a reliable measure of picture quality.
