What a flat address space means
In a flat memory model, a location is identified by an address within one continuous range, typically represented as increasing integer values. Software uses that address directly rather than combining a segment identifier with an offset. The range depends on the processor architecture: the RTEMS Project’s CPU Architecture Supplement 6.2, dated December 19, 2025, describes a flat model spanning the processor’s allowable address space.

Flat versus segmented addressing
| Aspect | Flat addressing | Segmented addressing |
|---|---|---|
| How a location is identified | One address in a linear range. | A segment and an offset together identify a location. TechTarget’s definition gives this general distinction. |
| Software-visible model | One range of addresses. | Multiple segments, each addressed with an offset. |
| Translation and paging | May still use paging or address translation beneath the flat view. | Depends on the system; segmentation describes address formation, not every underlying memory-management mechanism. |
| Sharing and protection | Not determined by flatness alone. | Not determined by segmentation alone. |
The comparison is about the address model. It does not, by itself, establish which design is faster or more secure; those properties depend on the particular processor and system.

Does flat mean physical RAM is contiguous?
No. A flat address space is a software-visible range, not a guarantee that each address corresponds to a physically adjacent byte of installed RAM. The system can translate virtual addresses to physical locations, and a range can include addresses that are not backed by RAM. RTEMS notes that a board support package can configure MMU translation while preserving behavior that corresponds to a flat model.

Paging can also exist beneath a flat address view. Berkeley’s CS162 memory-management materials describe giving each process the illusion of a large flat address space while dividing it into pages: CS162 lecture slides.
Does flat mean processes share memory?
No. Flatness alone does not say whether programs use one shared address space or separate protected address spaces. That is a matter of operating-system design and configuration. Oracle’s ChorusOS documentation, for example, describes a MEM_FLAT model in which the kernel and applications share one unprotected address space, while protected configurations use separate virtual spaces: ChorusOS memory configuration.

Therefore, “flat address space” and “shared address space” are not interchangeable terms. A system can present a flat range within each process while keeping processes isolated from one another.

The number of address bits determines the theoretical size of the address range. As an architecture example—not a universal definition or a claim about installed RAM—the RTEMS Project’s 2025 supplement says most of its targets use 32-bit addresses from 0x00000000 to 0xFFFFFFFF, a 4 GiB address range. It also identifies some smaller supported targets with 20-bit or 24-bit addresses. These figures describe address widths and ranges for RTEMS-supported targets, not how much physical memory a board necessarily contains.

The 80386 manual provides a historical illustration of the distinction: it describes mapping a four-gigabyte flat space onto physical address space using translation mechanisms. Quick Recap
What “flat” does not tell you
- Whether an MMU is present: a flat view can be implemented with address translation.
- Whether paging is used: a flat address range can be divided into pages internally.
- Whether every address is backed by RAM: the model describes address organization, not physical memory capacity.
- Whether processes are isolated or share memory: that depends on the operating system and its configuration.
