Flash is designed to run on your machine, although its repository also supports connecting to a remote Ollama server.
What Flash 0.5.5 adds
In a September 26, 2026 post, Nathan C. describes Flash 0.5.5 as a coding agent whose model and tools run on the user’s hardware. The release adds a browser interface, started from a terminal with flash --web. The browser workflow retains the agent’s tools and permission prompts rather than replacing them with a separate, less-visible execution path.

The interface streams replies, lets users collapse tool calls, displays colored file diffs, and includes projects, cross-chat search, and a panel for generated files. It is keyboard-oriented, with a command palette and shortcuts. These are features described by the project author, not the findings of an independent product evaluation.

How to access Flash from a phone
For access from a phone on the same local network, the post gives the command flash --web --lan and says Flash prints a QR code to make connecting easier. The author says the web server listens only on localhost by default; LAN access is an explicit option.

Nathan C. describes several safeguards for the browser interface: a random token that changes at startup, a protected cookie, origin checks, and JSON-only state-changing requests. These are the author’s account of the design. The available sources do not establish that an independent security audit has tested them, so they should not be treated as a guarantee that exposing a development machine is risk-free. Keep access limited to a trusted network and review the project’s current security guidance before enabling network access.

Newly saved items apply in the next session, not by changing the prompt midway through the current one. The author says the prompt stays fixed during a session so it does not have to be reread on every turn. If a new user message arrives, the background review yields; Nathan C. summarizes this behavior by saying, “The review never blocks you.” He also says Flash edits only skills it created itself.
This is persistence around the model, not evidence that coding tasks retrain the model’s weights. The benefit is that useful procedures and setup details can carry forward; the tradeoff is that saved context is only as useful as the review and the information it captures.

Setup, models, and hardware
The repository describes Flash as an Ollama-based agent. Its README says it can connect to a local Ollama server or a remote one, so “runs on my machine” describes the local setup, not every possible configuration. The README recommends Flash Onyx 2.5 in 12B and 31B sizes, describing the 12B size as suitable for consumer hardware and the 31B size as needing a bigger GPU. Those are project statements, not independently tested hardware recommendations; the README may also have changed since the 0.5.5 post.
For the local configuration, the practical decision is whether your machine can run the model you choose at a pace and quality that work for your tasks. The sources do not identify a specific GPU shortlist, establish minimum system requirements, or provide measured performance comparisons. If you connect to a remote Ollama server, inference takes place there instead, so that setup should not be described as entirely local.

How Flash handles edits—and local-model tradeoffs
The author says Flash applies file changes by specifying exact text to replace and groups multiple edits to the same file. The design aims to reduce the amount of model output, which can matter when local inference is slower. The agent also supports /undo for the previous turn’s file changes, including removing files created during that turn.
Nathan C. is candid about the broader tradeoff: “Local models are slower and smaller than the ones behind the big cloud tools.” He describes targeted edits, a stable prompt, interruptible background review, and access to full tool output as design responses to that constraint. The post supplies no measured speed, quality, or reliability comparison, so it cannot establish how Flash performs against cloud agents on a given task.

Licensing: the agent and the model are separate
The repository says Flash’s CLI, Modelfiles, and prompts are MIT licensed. That does not automatically apply to the model weights: the README says underlying weights follow the base model’s terms, and identifies Flash Onyx 2.x as built on Gemma 4. Check the applicable base-model license as well as Flash’s before using or redistributing a particular setup.
What the release does—and does not—establish
Flash 0.5.5 is presented as a way to work with a coding agent through a browser, optionally from a phone on the same network, while retaining tool permissions and carrying selected task knowledge into future sessions. Whether it is a good fit depends on the local model and hardware, tolerance for slower inference, and comfort with the setup and network controls.
The release post and repository document the author’s design and configuration claims. They do not establish independent security testing, performance benchmarks, or comparative hands-on results. Readers evaluating Flash should treat those as open questions rather than assume that “local” by itself settles privacy, safety, or capability.
