Google Ads suspended RACE developer Przemysław Alexander Kamiński’s account for “Malicious software” and “Compromised Site” after he launched an advertising campaign. Kamiński says he spent $500, checked the app and its web and download infrastructure, and received clean results from several security services—but those checks did not reveal what Google Ads had detected. His account was later reinstated after public attention, still without an explanation.
What is RACE?
RACE is an open-source, native macOS terminal multiplexer written in Rust. It lets users position and resize terminal surfaces freely and manages terminal processes so shell sessions can persist when the application restarts. Kamiński’s account and InfoQ’s report describe the software and the subsequent advertising-platform incident.

What happened to the Google Ads account?
In a post dated September 9, 2026, Kamiński said he launched a Google Ads campaign, spent $500, and then had his account suspended under the labels “Malicious software” and “Compromised Site.” He said his appeals were rejected without identifying what was supposedly malicious or compromised, what evidence led to the decision, or why his submissions did not resolve it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThose labels describe Google Ads’ decision in this case; the available accounts do not disclose the underlying rule, artifact, or detection that triggered it. The incident does not establish how often Google Ads makes such decisions or whether this case reflects a wider pattern.

What checks did the developer report?
Kamiński said he reviewed the RACE website, download infrastructure, JavaScript assets, distributed macOS application, signatures, and notarization. He also reported these results:
- Google Safe Browsing showed no unsafe content for the website and downloads.
- Google Search Console showed no security issues for either domain.
- VirusTotal showed no detections for the distributed DMG.
These checks concern different things: Safe Browsing and Search Console results related to the site or download addresses, while VirusTotal checked the distributed file. A clean result in those services does not establish what Google Ads detected, whether Ads uses the same criteria, or that the app was independently proven harmless in every respect.

Could terminal-process management have triggered a false positive?
Kamiński considered RACE’s background subprocess management as one possible explanation. Managing shell processes is part of a terminal multiplexer’s normal job, especially when it keeps sessions alive across application restarts. RACE offers a native PTY host, external dtach, or no persistence; the developer also said version 1.0.39 added cleanup behavior related to persistent processes.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

That is a hypothesis, not a confirmed cause. Neither Kamiński’s account nor InfoQ’s report establishes that the PTY host, dtach, persistent sessions, or child processes triggered Google Ads’ decision. Notarization and clean scanner results are evidence the developer reported, but they do not identify the platform’s detection logic.

How was the suspension resolved?
Kamiński later edited his post to say the account had been reinstated after the incident drew attention on Hacker News. He wrote: “Through the apparent magic of Hacker News, my Google Ads account has been reinstated. Still no explanation of what triggered the suspension, but thank you to everyone who helped make it visible (and/or fixed).”
InfoQ’s October 6, 2026 report also describes the reinstatement and the lack of an explanation. The accounts do not say why Google restored the account, whether a specific review changed the decision, or what—if anything—was corrected.

What this incident does—and does not—show
This is a documented developer account of one Google Ads suspension, the checks Kamiński says he performed, and an eventual reinstatement without a stated reason. It shows that clean results from separate site and file checks did not give him an answer about the Ads decision. It does not establish the suspension’s technical cause, prove that the decision was a false positive, or quantify how frequently similar cases occur.
