The message ArgumentException: An element with the same key already exists in the dictionary is not a single 7 Days to Die bug with one universal fix. It means that one game subsystem tried to add a key that was already present. The first subsystem named in the stack trace tells you which repair is appropriate: remove a duplicated startup flag, isolate a mod or asset conflict, rebuild a damaged world power file, or align mismatched versions. Do not delete save files until the trace points to the affected data.

What the duplicate-key error actually means
A dictionary is a key-value collection in the game code. Every key must be unique; adding a second entry with the same key throws this exception. In 7 Days to Die, the key can come from very different places:

- Startup arguments parsed from a launch script or server manager.
- Mod registrations, textures, icons, or XML patches.
- Persisted electrical-network nodes loaded by
PowerManager. - Data produced by a different game, server, or mod version.
That is why the wording alone cannot identify the cause. A Linux dedicated-server report, for example, was fixed because the launch command contained -dedicated twice; a moderator described the duplicate flag as understandable in that context. See the original report at The Fun Pimps forum. Other reports show the same exception while loading power nodes or registering duplicate mod assets.
Read the stack trace before changing anything
Stop restarting the server repeatedly and save the complete log from the failed launch. Search upward from the final exception and note the first recognizable subsystem listed after Dictionary.Add. The useful fork is usually one of these:

| Trace clue | When it fails | Mods implicated? | Data-loss risk | Reversible first action |
|---|---|---|---|---|
ParseCommandLine, launch-script entries, or repeated argument names |
Before world loading | No | None | Edit the command or script and remove the duplicate flag |
ModManager, texture/icon loading, duplicate ItemIcons, or XML patch warnings |
During content registration, usually before a usable world loads | Yes | None if files are moved, not deleted | Move the Mods folder out and validate the base installation |
PowerManager.LoadPowerManager, PowerManager.AddPowerNode, or a duplicate Vector3i coordinate |
While loading a saved world | Not necessarily | Stored electrical-network state can be lost | Back up the world, then move or delete only its Power.dat |
| Version warnings, or the exception remains after mods are removed | Varies; often during startup or world load | Possible | None for a clean-profile test | Match client, server, and mod versions and test a clean world |
A forum log demonstrates why the exact frame matters: PowerManager.AddPowerNode failed on the coordinate key -159, 28, 838, indicating a duplicate persisted world position rather than a duplicated command-line option. That case is documented at The Fun Pimps forum.
Safe triage procedure
- Stop the game or dedicated server. Do not edit files while the process is writing a save.
- Copy the entire save and server profile. Preserve the original world, configuration, and logs in a separate backup location. A partial backup is not sufficient if you later need to restore a mod list or version.
- Capture the failing log. Keep the first stack trace, not just the last line shown in a console window.
- Identify the subsystem. Follow the table above; do not choose the
Power.datremedy merely because the exception says “dictionary.” - Make one reversible change. Rename or move a folder/file when possible, then test. Changing several things at once makes the result impossible to diagnose.
When the trace points to duplicate startup arguments
Find the source of the repeated flag
Inspect the actual command used to start the server, not only a graphical shortcut. Check shell or batch launch scripts, service definitions, and any server manager that appends its own options. Compare the complete command for repeated switches such as -dedicated. The documented Linux case had that flag twice, and removing one instance resolved the duplicate-key exception: forum report and moderator reply.

Correct and retest
- Stop the server and open the launch script or manager’s startup-argument field.
- Leave one occurrence of each required flag; remove the duplicate occurrence rather than changing unrelated options.
- Save the script, start the server, and watch the new log from the beginning.
- If startup proceeds beyond command-line parsing, continue with normal world-load checks. If a different duplicate-key trace appears, use that new subsystem as the next diagnostic branch.
This repair does not alter world data, so it is the lowest-risk branch. If the duplicate returns after editing the script, a manager or wrapper is probably adding the option again; inspect generated launch settings as well as the visible script.
When mods or assets create the duplicate key
Establish a clean baseline
A trace mentioning ModManager, texture or icon registration, or XML patch application points to content rather than the save. Duplicate ItemIcons files have been reported on The Fun Pimps forum, and another support thread recommends removing all mods, validating the installation, and checking each mod individually. The relevant reports are the duplicate-asset discussion and the validation and isolation advice.

- Stop the client or server.
- Move the complete
Modsfolder to a temporary location outside the game directory. Moving it preserves a rollback; do not permanently delete it during diagnosis. - Use your platform’s file-validation or verify-installation function to restore missing or altered base files.
- Launch with no mods and record whether the same exception remains.
Restore one mod at a time
If the unmodded installation starts, close it and restore a single mod. Start again, let the main menu or server finish loading, and inspect the log before adding another. Continue until the exception returns; the last mod or asset group added is the first suspect. Pay particular attention to packages containing duplicate icon names, texture files, or XML patches. Remove the conflicting file, install a version intended for your exact game build, or leave the mod disabled. A client-only mod can still be harmless to a server, while a mod that changes server assets must be tested on both sides.
If the clean installation fails too, the mod folder was not the only cause. Keep it out while you investigate a version mismatch or damaged world, so the baseline remains meaningful.

When PowerManager or a Vector3i key appears
Why Power.dat is different
The electrical network is persisted in the affected world’s Power.dat. A corrupted file can make PowerManager.LoadPowerManager add the same coordinate twice. Pingperfect documents this specific error as a possible corrupted Power.dat and recommends a backup, removal, and restart sequence: knowledgebase instructions.
Back up, then remove only the affected file
- Stop the dedicated server completely and wait for the process to exit.
- Make a full copy of the affected world and its surrounding save/profile data. Name the copy with the date so you can identify the pre-repair state.
- In the save directory for the world named in the log, locate
Power.dat. Do not remove unrelated player, chunk, or world files. - Move
Power.datinto the backup location (or delete it only after verifying the backup). - Start the server and let it load the world. The game should rebuild power data as the world is used.
- Test a small electrical setup and review the log for a new exception before inviting players back.
Removing the file is a targeted repair, but it is not lossless: stored electrical-network state may be discarded. Preserve the original file if you need to recover that state or revert after an unsuccessful test. If the server still fails with the file absent, restore the backup and follow the mod and version branches instead of repeatedly deleting files.

When versions do not match
The same message can be caused by a mod built for another game revision or by client and dedicated-server builds that are out of sync. A support reply concerning an A19.6 and Darkness Falls setup describes the exception as potentially a mod error or a version-mismatch error: The Fun Pimps support thread. That historical example does not establish behavior for every current build, so check the versions actually installed on your system.
Confirm the complete version set
- Record the exact game build on every client.
- Record the dedicated-server build and branch.
- Record each mod’s release or compatibility note, including dependencies.
- Ensure the server and connecting clients use the same required mod versions and load order.
Use a clean world or profile as a control
- Keep mods disabled and create or select a temporary clean world/server profile.
- Start it with the same server executable and configuration.
- If the clean profile works, the original world or its mod/version history is implicated; restore the original data only after aligning versions.
- If the clean profile also fails, the executable, installation, or launch configuration remains suspect. Re-validate the base files and recheck startup arguments.
Restore saved data incrementally: first the world, then optional content, testing after each change. This separates a damaged persisted file from a reproducible installation problem.
Verify the repair without creating a new failure
- Keep the backup until players have joined successfully and the log shows a complete startup.
- Check both the server console and the client log; a server that starts can still reject a client with incompatible content.
- Test the original world separately from a clean world so you know whether the fix addressed startup or save loading.
- Reintroduce mods in small, documented batches only after the unmodded baseline is stable; one-at-a-time restoration is required when identifying a specific conflicting asset.
- Record the changed flag, mod, version, or file so a future update can be rolled back quickly.
Do not infer a cause from timing alone. “Fails before the world appears” can describe duplicate arguments or mod registration, while a power-file failure occurs as the saved world is being loaded; the stack-trace names are the deciding evidence.
What not to do
- Do not delete the entire save because the exception contains the word “dictionary.” Only a
PowerManager/Vector3itrace justifies testingPower.dat. - Do not leave every mod removed as a permanent “fix” if the clean test only proves that one package is conflicting. Identify the package and its compatible version.
- Do not edit a generated launch command while a server manager is running; it may overwrite your correction or append the duplicate again.
- Do not restore a backup over the active world until the server is stopped, or you risk mixing old and new files.
Quick decision checklist
- Find the first subsystem after
Dictionary.Add. - For
ParseCommandLine: remove repeated startup flags such as a second-dedicated. - For
ModManager, icons, textures, or XML: moveMods, validate, start clean, then restore one mod at a time. - For
PowerManageror duplicate coordinates: back up the world and remove only itsPower.dat, accepting possible loss of stored electrical-network state. - For a persistent or version-related failure: align client, server, and mod builds and compare a clean profile with the original world.
Current 7 Days to Die builds and mod ecosystems can differ from the historical forum cases cited above. Treat those reports as diagnostic patterns, then apply the branch that matches your own log rather than assuming an old fix is universal.
