Fixing SSH Write Failed: Connection Reset by Peer

SSH’s “Write failed: Connection reset by peer” is a connection-termination symptom, not a diagnosis. Use the failure phase, timestamps, sshd logs, connection-limit checks, network comparisons, and targeted keepalives to find the cause.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Write failed: Connection reset by peer means your SSH client was writing to a connection that had already been reset or aborted. It does not, by itself, prove that sshd crashed: the reset may come from the server, a firewall, NAT device, VPN, load balancer, or another break in the network path. Find the phase and timestamp of the failure, then correlate the client’s verbose output with server logs before changing keepalive or connection-limit settings.

What the error actually tells you

SSH runs over a TCP connection. When the local client writes encrypted SSH data after the connection has been forcibly terminated, OpenSSH reports Write failed: Connection reset by peer. “Peer” describes the other endpoint as observed by the local socket; it is not proof that the remote operating system intentionally sent the reset. A middlebox or a broken network path can produce the same result.

The message is therefore an observation, not a diagnosis. The useful clues are when it happened, which protocol phase was active, whether other clients are affected, and what the server and network recorded at that timestamp.

First, identify when the reset occurs

Run the connection with maximum client diagnostics and save the final 30–50 lines:

Match the last debug line to one of these cases:

Failure timing Most useful first suspects Next evidence to collect
During TCP connection or immediately before key exchange Port filtering, address-family or routing problems, an unhealthy sshd, security controls, or a package defect Client debug output, service status, daemon logs, kernel events, and an IPv4/IPv6 comparison
During key exchange or before authentication completes Daemon crash, pre-authentication policy, MaxStartups pressure, resource exhaustion, or an active security device Logs containing preauth, crash or restart records, connection counts, and a timestamped reproduction
Immediately after login Session startup failure, shell or account policy, forced commands, or a path device that drops the newly established flow Authentication and session logs, account configuration, and a second client test
After a long idle period or many hours NAT, firewall, VPN or load-balancer idle expiry; a changed route; or a genuinely unreachable host Idle timers, keepalive behavior, packet captures where permitted, and a test that keeps the session active
Only from one network or one client Local resolver, route, VPN, firewall, address-family, or endpoint-specific conditions The same command from another network and explicit -4/-6 tests
From many clients at the same time Server overload, a service restart, connection limits, or a shared firewall/load balancer Server-wide logs, resource metrics, active pre-authentication counts, and restart history

A reset during key exchange deserves a different investigation from a reset after eight idle hours. Do not start by increasing timeouts unless the timing demonstrates an idle-path problem.

Correlate the client error with server evidence

Check the SSH service and its logs

Use the service name appropriate to the distribution. On many systemd systems it is sshd; on others it is ssh:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
systemctl status sshd
journalctl -u sshd --since "YYYY-MM-DD HH:MM" --until "YYYY-MM-DD HH:MM"

# If the unit is named ssh instead:
journalctl -u ssh --since "YYYY-MM-DD HH:MM" --until "YYYY-MM-DD HH:MM"

On traditional installations, inspect /var/log/auth.log (common on Debian-derived systems) or /var/log/secure (common on Red Hat-derived systems). Use the exact client timestamp and timezone. Search for fatal, preauth, authentication-limit messages, restarts, segmentation faults, out-of-memory events, firewall denials, and a clean administrative stop.

A client-side reset line can appear after the server has already exited, been killed, or become unreachable. Conversely, no matching daemon message can point toward a network device or a failure before the request reached the server. Absence of a log entry is evidence about reachability, not proof that nothing happened.

Reproduce a suspected daemon fault safely

If every attempt fails at the same key-exchange message, check recent package changes, service restarts, kernel logs, and core dumps:

systemctl status sshd
journalctl -k --since "YYYY-MM-DD HH:MM"
coredumpctl list sshd

Do not replace the production listener while users depend on it. For a controlled reproduction, run a separate debug instance on an isolated high port and direct a test client to that port:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
# Example pattern; choose an unused port and an appropriate config path.
/usr/sbin/sshd -ddd -e -p 2222 -f /path/to/test_sshd_config
ssh -vvv -p 2222 user@host

The foreground -ddd -e run prints maximum daemon debugging to the terminal. Stop it after the test and return to the normal service. A documented Red Hat incident shows why this matters: sshd died during key exchange after reaching SSH2_MSG_KEX_ECDH_REPLY, while the client displayed this exact write failure. In that case, the defect was corrected by a later package version, so a repeatable pre-authentication reset should trigger package and crash investigation rather than a blind keepalive change.

Rule out unauthenticated connection pressure

MaxStartups controls concurrent unauthenticated connections. When the limit is reached, additional attempts can be dropped. OpenBSD’s current manual documents a default of 10:30:100: up to 10 unauthenticated connections are allowed without probabilistic refusal; between the start and full thresholds, refusal probability rises; at 100, new unauthenticated connections are refused.

Read the effective value instead of relying on a configuration file that may be overridden:

Inspect connection pressure while a failure is occurring. The following shows TCP sockets in the SYN-received state for port 22; also review established and pre-authentication populations in the SSH logs:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
ss -tn state syn-recv sport = :22

Increase the limit only when logs and socket counts demonstrate legitimate parallel demand. Pair any change with connection-rate limiting, abuse monitoring, and resource checks. A larger limit cannot repair a daemon crash, a blocked port, or an exhausted host, and it can increase the amount of work an exposed server performs for unauthenticated traffic.

Investigate the network path and middleboxes

Compare address families and client networks

Different routes can have different firewalls, NAT rules, VPN paths, or broken endpoints. Test both families when the host publishes both addresses:

ssh -4 -vvv user@host
ssh -6 -vvv user@host

Then try the same command from a second network, such as a separate wired, cellular, or administrative connection that you are authorized to use. A failure limited to one client network points toward that path; a simultaneous failure everywhere points toward the server or a shared edge device.

Check stateful devices and idle policies

Firewalls, NAT gateways, VPN concentrators, and load balancers track connection state. Some remove an idle flow after their own timeout, even though both SSH processes still appear alive. A route change or tunnel renegotiation can have the same user-visible result. Review the relevant device’s idle-flow, session, and reset logs, and verify that the SSH port is allowed in both directions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If policy permits packet capture, capture narrowly and briefly at both ends or at the closest controlled points. Determine which interface sends the TCP RST and whether it occurs after an idle interval, a retransmission sequence, or a daemon exit. Protect credentials and payloads, and stop the capture when the reproduction is complete.

Keepalive-related resets are one documented possibility: if probes receive no response, the sender can conclude that the peer is unreachable and close the connection. That behavior still does not identify whether the original loss was caused by a server, tunnel, NAT state, or firewall.

Configure SSH keepalives only for a demonstrated liveness problem

Client-side keepalives

Add a host-specific block to ~/.ssh/config rather than changing every destination:

Host example
    ServerAliveInterval 30
    ServerAliveCountMax 3

ServerAliveInterval sends an encrypted-channel keepalive when no data has been received for the specified number of seconds. ServerAliveCountMax sets how many unanswered messages the client tolerates before disconnecting. The OpenSSH client documentation gives a useful reference point: with ServerAliveInterval 15 and the default count of 3, an unresponsive server leads to a disconnect after approximately 45 seconds. The actual timing can vary with scheduling and network conditions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

These settings make failure detection explicit and can keep a stateful device from treating an otherwise active administrative session as idle. They do not revive a crashed daemon, override an authentication rejection, open a blocked port, or repair a broken route. Choose an interval that fits the shortest relevant network idle timer, and avoid values so aggressive that they create unnecessary traffic or false failures on a congested path.

Server-side keepalives

On the server, the corresponding controls are ClientAliveInterval and ClientAliveCountMax in sshd_config. They let sshd test whether the client is still reachable and terminate sessions that stop responding. Validate a proposed configuration before reloading:

sshd -t
systemctl reload sshd

Use the correct service unit if your distribution names it ssh. Server-side keepalives are a policy choice: set them consistently with operational requirements, jump hosts, VPNs, and maintenance sessions. They are not a substitute for diagnosing resets that happen during key exchange or immediately after a daemon restart.

A disciplined troubleshooting workflow

  1. Capture the phase. Run ssh -vvv user@host, save the final 30–50 lines, and record the exact UTC or local timestamp, destination address, client network, and whether the session was idle.
  2. Reproduce once without changing settings. Multiple simultaneous changes make it impossible to tell which condition mattered. Note whether the failure is deterministic and whether ssh -4 or ssh -6 changes it.
  3. Correlate both ends. Inspect the matching journalctl or authentication-log window for sshd exits, preauth limits, OOM events, crashes, restarts, and administrative actions.
  4. Check effective configuration. Use sshd -T for server values, especially maxstartups, and inspect the client’s active configuration with ssh -G user@host when host-specific settings may be involved.
  5. Test scope. Try an authorized second client or network. A one-path failure suggests routing or middlebox state; a broad failure suggests the service, host, or shared edge.
  6. Inspect pressure and health. Review unauthenticated socket counts, CPU and memory pressure, kernel messages, package changes, service restarts, and core dumps.
  7. Use a controlled debug daemon if needed. Reproduce on an isolated port with sshd -ddd -e, never by replacing the production listener.
  8. Apply one targeted fix. Correct the package or daemon fault, address connection pressure, repair the path, or add keepalives according to the evidence. Re-test the original failure mode afterward.

Common mistakes and what they mean

  • Increasing every timeout first: this can hide an idle-path symptom while leaving a crash or pre-authentication limit untouched.
  • Assuming “peer” means the remote administrator: the reset may have been generated by a firewall, NAT gateway, VPN, or load balancer.
  • Reading only the client message: the final SSH line cannot distinguish a daemon exit from a packet-path failure; the timestamped server view is essential.
  • Raising MaxStartups without measuring pressure: this expands unauthenticated exposure and may worsen resource exhaustion.
  • Testing only one address family: IPv4 and IPv6 may traverse different routes and policy devices.
  • Running a debug sshd over the production port: this can interrupt existing users and create a second outage. Use an isolated port and a test configuration.
  • Capturing traffic broadly: SSH payloads are encrypted but connection metadata and addresses can still be sensitive. Limit scope, access, and retention.

How to interpret the result

A repeatable reset at the same key-exchange step, accompanied by an sshd crash, restart, or core dump, is a server software or host-health incident. A pre-authentication-limit message with high concurrent connection counts indicates connection pressure and calls for capacity and abuse-control review. A reset after a predictable idle period, with no daemon event and a middlebox timeout or RST, is a path-liveness issue where appropriately chosen keepalives may help. A failure restricted to one client, address family, or network is most efficiently pursued through route, firewall, VPN, DNS, and endpoint comparisons.
