When an iPhone says “Cannot Verify Server Identity” or “The identity of [server] cannot be verified,” it cannot verify the identity of the named server for that connection. The alert alone does not show whether the cause is public Wi-Fi, Mail, a subscribed calendar, or a compromised phone. Note the server name and what you were doing when the message appeared, then follow the matching checks below.
Start with the server name and what the iPhone was doing
Before dismissing the alert, note the hostname it names and the activity that triggered it: joining a Wi-Fi network, fetching email, or refreshing a calendar. Similar alerts can arise in different contexts, so the hostname and timing are more useful than the wording alone. Apple Community reports describe cases involving Mail settings and certificates as well as recurring alerts associated with subscribed calendars (Mail and account reports; calendar-related report).

- If you do not recognize the server, cancel the connection while you investigate. Do not accept an unfamiliar certificate just to make the alert disappear.
- If the alert appears only on a particular Wi-Fi network, investigate that network’s sign-in process.
- If it appears while Mail is checking a specific account, focus on that account and its mail server.
- If it returns without an obvious Mail action, consider whether a subscribed calendar or another account is refreshing from the named host.
Match the alert to its likely context
| What was happening | What to check | Who may need to fix it |
|---|---|---|
| Joining public Wi-Fi | Whether the network requires a sign-in page and whether the named host is related to that network | You or the Wi-Fi operator |
| Mail was fetching or sending messages | The account, named mail server, certificate, and account configuration | Your email provider or server administrator; sometimes you, with their guidance |
| The warning recurs with no visible Mail activity | Whether a subscribed calendar or account you do not recognize is contacting the named host | You can remove a subscription you have identified as unwanted; the service administrator may need to correct a server problem |
These are diagnostic possibilities, not a ranking of causes. The available reports do not establish that one context accounts for most alerts.

Some public networks require you to complete a sign-in page before the connection is fully available. Try opening the network’s sign-in process and completing it. In its specific 2022 calendar-feed troubleshooting article, Hebcal also suggests switching Wi-Fi off and using mobile data if the sign-in is unavailable or unsuccessful; it notes that restarting may sometimes be needed. Those are case-specific suggestions, not a general certificate repair (Hebcal’s 2022 guidance).

If the warning appears while using Mail
Identify the affected account and the exact server named in the alert. Ask your email provider or server administrator to check that server’s certificate and the account configuration. A certificate problem on the server generally needs attention from the party that controls it; repeatedly dismissing the warning does not verify the server.
Apple Community users have reported that removing and adding an affected account helped in some cases, including reports about mail-server certificate problems (historic account-setting reports; 2024 self-certified-server report). These are user reports, not a universal or current procedure for every iOS version. Do not remove an account as a first step: depending on how it is configured, doing so can affect locally stored or synchronized data. Get provider guidance first, and make sure you understand what is stored on the device before changing account settings.

If it keeps appearing without an obvious app action
A subscribed calendar can contact a server during refresh even when you are not actively viewing that calendar. Apple Community users have described recurring alerts tied to subscribed calendars, including a report involving an old team calendar (calendar report; 2023 community discussion). This makes a calendar worth checking, but does not prove that it is the cause of every recurring warning.
Review the calendars and accounts on the iPhone for subscriptions or entries you can identify as unwanted. Remove only one you recognize as unwanted; if you cannot identify the source, ask the calendar provider or your organization’s administrator before deleting it. The reports available here do not establish a current iOS menu path for finding or removing subscriptions, so exact labels may vary by iOS version.

Do not bypass an unfamiliar certificate warning
Do not trust an unfamiliar certificate merely to suppress the alert. The warning means the phone could not verify the identity of the named server for that connection; it does not by itself establish why verification failed. Prefer completing sign-in on a trusted Wi-Fi network or having the relevant provider or administrator correct the certificate or account configuration.
Hebcal describes turning SSL off for a particular subscribed calendar feed in its service-specific article. That changes the feed from HTTPS to HTTP, so it is not general security advice and should not be treated as a fix for Mail or other services. Use a service-specific setting only when the calendar provider confirms it is appropriate; otherwise, favor correcting the certificate or using a trusted connection (Hebcal’s calendar-feed example).
