The NuPhy Gem80 is an 88-key ANSI tenkeyless (TKL) mechanical keyboard kit, not a complete keyboard by default: NuPhy says switches and keycaps are sold separately. Choose between a wired-only or tri-mode configuration, then plan for compatible MX-style switches and an ANSI TKL keycap set. Its stock gasket mount is intended to feel soft and slightly springy, while the included alternative mounting parts offer another way to tune the build.

What the NuPhy Gem80 is—and what the kit includes

NuPhy specifies an ANSI 80% layout with 88 keys. The listing describes an aluminum top case, PC bottom case, FR4 plate, plate-mounted stabilizers and south-facing RGB LEDs with more than 40 backlight modes. It lists compatibility with macOS, Windows, Linux, Android and iOS. These are manufacturer specifications; check the exact regional product listing for the configuration being purchased. The standard barebones kit does not include switches or keycaps. NuPhy lists a USB-C data cable, a keycap/switch puller, three extra switches, five silicone sets, a screwdriver and an extra foot-pad set; the tri-mode version also includes a 2.4 GHz receiver. Separately selected bundles or add-ons may change what arrives, so check the contents for the exact order.

What to add to a barebones build

  • Switches: Choose compatible 3-pin or 5-pin MX-style switches; the board supports hot-swapping, so switches can be installed or changed without soldering.
  • Keycaps: Choose a set that covers an ANSI TKL layout. A set designed for a different layout may not include the right key sizes or legends.

Wired-only or tri-mode: which configuration fits?

The wired-only configuration is the straightforward choice if the keyboard will remain connected by USB. The tri-mode version adds 2.4 GHz wireless and Bluetooth 5.0 alongside wired use. NuPhy lists 1000 Hz polling for wired use, and for the tri-mode model lists 1000 Hz over 2.4 GHz and 125 Hz over Bluetooth. The wireless figures apply to the tri-mode model, not the wired-only version. NuPhy Gem80 product listing

  • Magnetic Switch: WH80 gaming keyboard utilizes magnetic switches and Hall Effect Sensors for faster response, Rapid Trigger; 8000Khz Polling for a better gaming and office experience; WH80 also with RGB backlighting, RGB backlighting brings you a better visual experience in the darkness
  • Faster Response Time: WH80 wireless keyboard transmits up to 8000 times per second. With 0.005mm RT precision, an 8000Hz polling rate, and 0.1ms latency, it delivers a smoother operation experience while maintaining stable performance during intensive use.
  • Intuitive Driver Software: The WH80 Hall Effect keyboard works with NuPhyIO, letting you easily customize every detail. Use the lever on the right for quick switching between modes or to return to your preset mode. Whether gaming or working, the WH80 handles it all with ease
  • Dynamic Keystroke - Within the range of key travel, two starting points can be set for pressing and bouncing back, and are responsible for different functions; when pressed, the first and second functions will be triggered in turn; when the key is bounced up, the third and fourth functions will be activated, realizing the process of a single press triggering four different functions, making the operation more enjoyable
Configuration Connection options Polling rate listed by NuPhy Best fit
Wired-only USB-C wired 1000 Hz wired A desk setup where a cable is acceptable and wireless connections are unnecessary.
Tri-mode USB-C wired, 2.4 GHz, Bluetooth 5.0 1000 Hz wired; 1000 Hz over 2.4 GHz; 125 Hz over Bluetooth A setup that benefits from switching between wired use and wireless connections.

Choose based on how you will connect it, not on the mere presence of a wireless option: the tri-mode configuration adds flexibility, while wired-only avoids paying for connection modes you will not use. The listing gives no battery-life figure in the cited specifications, so it cannot establish how often the tri-mode version needs charging.

How the mounting options affect the feel

NuPhy describes the Gem80 as supporting gasket and top mounting, and its kit listing includes multiple silicone sets plus a mount replacement guide. RTINGS reports that the stock gasket setup feels soft and slightly springy; its review also notes alternative gasket styles and screws for a more traditional top-mounted setup. These are RTINGS’ observations, not hands-on findings for this article. RTINGS NuPhy Gem80 review

Stock gasket setup

Start here if you want the feel RTINGS describes and prefer not to reconfigure the board. The silicone sets provide the documented basis for experimenting with alternate gasket styles, but the available evidence does not establish a measured difference among every included set.

Top-mounted setup

The included screws and replacement guide give builders an alternate mounting route. Consider it if you prefer to assemble the board in a more traditional top-mounted configuration. The sources do not quantify how the resulting sound or typing feel compares with the stock setup.

Build and setup details to check before buying

  • Layout: Confirm ANSI TKL coverage in your keycap set, including the non-standard sizes your chosen set may need to cover.
  • Switch compatibility: The stated support is for 3-pin and 5-pin MX-style switches; do not assume other switch families fit.
  • Dimensions and weight: NuPhy lists the board at 358.1 mm wide, 141.3 mm long, 36.7 mm at the back and 21.5 mm at the front, with a weight of 1,120 g. Treat these as manufacturer figures and verify them against the regional listing. NuPhy Gem80 product listing
  • Accessories: NuPhy presents wrist rests and a deskmat as optional additions. The cited specifications do not establish fit for third-party accessories.
  • Lighting: The listing specifies south-facing RGB LEDs and more than 40 backlight modes; this is a lighting feature, not a substitute for checking keycap compatibility.

Who should consider the Gem80?

  • Good fit: Builders who want a hot-swappable ANSI TKL base, already have—or are willing to choose—switches and keycaps, and value a choice between wired-only and tri-mode connections.
  • Think twice: Buyers who expect a ready-to-type keyboard out of the box, need a different layout, or do not want to select and install separate components.
  • Configuration decision: Pick tri-mode if you will use 2.4 GHz or Bluetooth; otherwise, the wired-only option covers the documented USB-C use case. Choose the stock gasket setup for its reported soft, slightly springy feel, or use the included guidance and parts to try top mounting.
