Fixing a Stale Promotion After a Blog Topic Changes

A downstream agent replaced a rejected story with a housing-market topic but kept the original promotion. The fix was to reuse its overlap filter upstream.

A blog post about the housing market ended with a promotion for an AI-agent setup PDF because two publishing agents handled different parts of the same draft—and only one part changed. Sungsoo Youn traced the mismatch to a downstream topic replacement that left the original topic’s footnote behind. His fix was to run the downstream agent’s own 30-day overlap check before the upstream agent emitted a card.

How the promotion became disconnected from the post

In a DEV Community post published on October 1, 2026, Youn described a workflow with two autonomous agents. The upstream card writer rotated among three candidate stories on a three-day cycle and attached a promotion related to the selected topic. The downstream blog agent checked proposed topics against its recent posts, rejecting overlap within a 30-day window.

When a candidate failed that check, the blog agent substituted a trending news topic. It changed the topic, but not the accompanying footnote. One replacement was a housing-market story; the footnote still promoted Youn’s AI-agent setup PDF. The next day, a different replacement topic concerned company earnings. The problem was not that the original card’s topic and promotion were mismatched. They had been assembled together; the mismatch appeared when the later stage replaced only the topic.

Why individually sensible rules combined into a bug

The card writer’s rotation and the blog agent’s repetition filter each had a clear purpose. But a three-topic rotation could send the downstream agent a story that fell within its 30-day exclusion window. The downstream fallback then changed one field without reconsidering the metadata that depended on it.

Youn’s diagnosis was that validation checked whether each card was internally well-formed, not whether its footnote remained relevant after a downstream substitution. That distinction matters: a structurally valid card can become semantically inconsistent after another system edits it.

What Youn changed in the workflow

Instead of waiting for the blog agent to reject a topic, Youn changed the upstream card writer to apply the same overlap logic before it produced a card. He imported the downstream overlap-check code read-only and used its 30-day check on both the title and the blog topic.

  1. Filter recent stories upstream. Skip a story used in the previous 30 days; titles differing only by numbers are treated as the same story.
  2. Reuse the downstream check. Run the downstream agent’s overlap code against both the proposed title and blog topic, rather than maintaining a separate approximation of its rules.
  3. Use a measured fallback pool. If all three original stories are blocked, choose from short write-ups about things the agent had measured while running.
  4. Keep the existing last resort. If no fallback topic passes, retain the previous fallback behavior rather than producing no post.

In Youn’s account, the fallback pool contained 68 write-ups, of which 27 passed the filter when he made the change. Those are figures from his own pipeline, not an independent evaluation. He noted that the eligible count could fall as more posts were published and planned to count passing topics when adding write-ups.

What this incident says about multi-agent publishing

The useful lesson is about preserving relationships between fields across handoffs. A promotion, disclosure, source note, image caption, or call to action may be valid for one topic and wrong for its replacement. Whenever a downstream stage substitutes content, it should either revalidate dependent metadata or replace the complete topic-and-metadata unit.

Running the same filter upstream also addresses a different risk: two separately written overlap checks can gradually disagree. Reusing the downstream implementation makes the earlier check more likely to match what the later stage will actually reject. It does not, by itself, prove the workflow is error-free; Youn’s post reports the change, not an independently measured reliability result.

“A fallback that replaces part of someone else’s output should ask whether the rest still fits.”

Youn also puts the upstream-filtering idea this way: “And if you’re upstream of a filter you know about, run the same filter first, using the downstream system’s own code, so the two can’t drift apart.” These are his practical conclusions from one reported incident, not a formal industry standard.
