Most failures are resolved by the first three steps. Reinstalling Chrome, resetting the router, or buying hardware should come only after you have identified where the fault sits.
Step 1: Check whether Twitch is down for everyone
Before changing anything on your computer, open Twitch Status. When this guide’s status check was run on October 7, 2026, the page listed login, web, chat, watching video, and broadcasting video as operational, with no incidents reported. That is a snapshot from one date, not a guarantee about the current state, so check the page again if your problem is recent.

Next, decide exactly what is failing, because the symptom determines which branch to follow:

- The page loads but login or chat fails: continue with Steps 2 and 3, since these are most often tied to the browser state.
- The page loads but the video does not play, shows an error code, or stays black: go to the playback section in Step 4.
Step 2: Confirm Chrome is a supported version and refresh the page
Twitch’s Supported Browsers article states: “The Twitch website, twitch.tv and supporting sites, officially support the latest 2 versions of Google Chrome.” If your Chrome is older than the two most recent versions, update it first, then fully relaunch the browser.

To update Chrome on Windows or Linux, select the three-dot menu, go to Help, then About Google Chrome, and let the browser check for and install the update. On macOS, the same About page is under the Chrome menu. Restart Chrome when the update finishes.
Then refresh the Twitch tab. Twitch’s own guidance puts this first for a reason: its extension help page says, “The most basic is to refresh your web page or app– yes, really.” If the refresh does not help, close every Chrome window, reopen the browser, and try again.
Step 3: Isolate extensions and stored site data
Browser extensions are one of the most common reasons Twitch behaves differently in one browser profile than in another. Twitch notes that extensions can change how the site appears and behaves, so test them before clearing anything else.

- Open a private window with Ctrl+Shift+N on Windows or Linux, or Cmd+Shift+N on macOS, and load Twitch there. Incognito normally runs without your extensions, so if Twitch works in that window, an extension or a stored setting is the likely cause.
- In a normal window, open chrome://extensions and switch off every extension. Reload Twitch.
- If Twitch now works, turn the extensions back on one at a time, reloading Twitch after each, until the failure returns. The last extension you enabled is the one to remove or disable for Twitch. Ad blockers and video or page-modifying tools are the usual suspects.
If extensions are not the cause, clear the cache and cookies. Twitch’s guidance is to disable extensions before clearing cache and cookies, which is the order used here. In Chrome, go to Settings > Privacy and security > Delete browsing data, choose a time range, and select only cached images and files and cookies and other site data. Leave other boxes unchecked, because Chrome warns that deleting browsing data can erase some website settings. Afterwards, sign in to Twitch again.
Step 4: Fix video playback errors
If the Twitch page loads but video fails, treat it as a playback problem. Twitch’s Playback Issue Troubleshooting article is the authoritative reference for error-specific steps, and its guidance is summarised below.
Error 3000: the browser cannot decode or display the stream
Twitch associates Error 3000 with the browser or device having trouble decoding and displaying the video stream. It lists three common causes: an outdated browser, hardware acceleration problems, and extensions. Work through them in this order, changing one thing at a time:

- SIT BACK,WATCH TOGETHER: Enjoy your favorite online entertainment on your HDTV - movies, TV shows, music, and more from Netflix, YouTube, HBO GO, Hulu Plus, Google Play Movies and Music, and Chrome
- REMOTE FREE: Chromecast works with devices you already own, including Android tablets and smartphones, iPhones, iPads, Chrome for Mac and Chrome for Windows. Browse for what to watch, control playback, and adjust volume using your device. You won't have to learn anything new.
- PLUG AND PLAY: Get started in 3 easy steps: plug Chromecast into any HDTV, connect it to Wi-Fi, and then send videos and more from your smartphone, tablet or laptop to your TV with the press of a button.
- Update Chrome to a supported version, as described in Step 2.
- Turn off Chrome’s hardware acceleration. Go to Settings > System (on recent versions this sits under System and performance) and switch off Use graphics acceleration when available, then relaunch Chrome.
- Update your graphics card driver from the manufacturer’s website or your operating system’s update tool, then restart the computer.
- Restart Chrome and reload Twitch.
- Disable extensions, including ad blockers, as described in Step 3.
If turning hardware acceleration off does not help, turn it back on so that your browser keeps its normal performance, and move on to the next step. Changing several settings at once makes it impossible to tell which change worked.
Error 7005: a DRM problem
Twitch identifies Error 7005 as a DRM issue, meaning browser digital rights management settings are preventing protected content from playing. The official article is the place to find the current remediation steps for this error, and those steps can change, so follow the Twitch instructions rather than third-party menu paths.
Playback checks that apply to any error
Google’s Fix videos & games that won’t play help page recommends confirming that JavaScript is allowed for the site. In Chrome, go to Settings > Privacy and security > Site settings > JavaScript and make sure Twitch is not blocked. The same page recommends testing in Incognito, isolating extensions, clearing cache and cookies, and updating Chrome before you change more advanced settings or reset the browser.

Step 5: Separate browser, network, and device causes
When other websites fail as well, or Twitch works on another connection or another computer, the fault is more likely to sit outside Chrome. Use these tests to narrow it down; none of them proves a single cause on its own.
- VPN or traffic-routing software: Twitch recommends logging out of any VPN or software that reroutes requests. Disconnect it, then reload Twitch.
- Different network: Try mobile data or another Wi-Fi network. If Twitch works there, the problem is on your original connection or its route.
- Different device: Open Twitch on a phone or another computer on the same network. If it works there, the issue is probably specific to the original device or browser profile.
- Router restart: Google’s help page suggests restarting the modem and router when media connectivity is broadly unreliable. Treat this as a test, not as evidence that the hardware needs replacing.
- Wired comparison: If symptoms seem tied to the Wi-Fi connection, a wired Ethernet connection can serve as a comparison. This is a diagnostic option inferred from Twitch’s advice to try a different network, not a step Twitch prescribes.
Step 6: Contact Twitch Support with useful evidence
If the steps above fail in a current, supported version of Chrome, contact Twitch Support. Include the following so the support team can reproduce the problem:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- The Chrome version and operating system you are using
- Exact steps that trigger the problem, and whether it happens in Incognito
- Screenshots of the error or the blank player
- Browser console error messages. To open the console, press Ctrl+Shift+J on Windows or Linux, or Cmd+Option+J on macOS, and copy any red error lines
Keep a note of which tests you ran and their results. That record is often more useful to support staff than repeating the same steps.
Choosing the right branch quickly
The fastest way to find the cause is to change one comparison at a time: normal window versus Incognito, extensions on versus off, the current network versus another network, and this device versus another device. Where the problem disappears, you have found the layer responsible. Where nothing changes, the problem is most likely on Twitch’s side or in an error that requires the official playback guide, so check status and the playback article before repeating local fixes.
Refer to the Browser Extensions & Twitch article for Twitch’s current guidance on extensions that modify its pages.
