Fixed or Variable Energy Tariffs: Which Is Better When Oil Prices Rise?

Rising oil prices do not reveal whether a fixed or variable tariff will cost less. Compare your actual rates, standing charges, usage and contract terms.

For household mains gas and electricity in Great Britain (England, Scotland and Wales), neither a fixed nor a variable tariff is automatically better when oil prices rise. A fixed tariff locks in its agreed unit rates and standing charges for a set term; a standard variable tariff can change, but covered households are protected by Ofgem’s cap on those rates and charges. Oil prices alone do not tell you which deal will cost less: compare the actual offers against your household’s usage, contract length and exit fees.

What rising oil prices can—and cannot—tell you about energy bills

Oil-price movements are not a direct calculator for a GB household’s mains gas or electricity tariff. The available official sources do not establish a reliable percentage or formula linking a particular oil benchmark rise to a later household bill change. The relationship is indirect and depends on energy markets and tariff rules.

Wholesale gas can affect household energy costs. Ofgem attributed the rise in the price cap for 1 October to 31 December 2026 to higher wholesale gas prices amid ongoing conflict in the Middle East. Gas can also influence wholesale electricity prices: the House of Commons Library explains that under marginal-cost pricing, a gas-fired generator may set the wholesale electricity price. Neither point means that a given oil-price increase passes through proportionally or immediately to a household tariff.

For context, Ofgem said the typical Direct Debit price cap rose by 4% for that October–December 2026 period. Its illustrative average Direct Debit rates were 26.32p/kWh for electricity and 7.97p/kWh for gas, with average daily standing charges of 54.83p and 29.68p respectively. These are period-specific averages, not forecasts or quotes for an individual home; rates vary by region, meter and payment method, and actual bills depend on consumption. Ofgem’s announcement of the cap change and its unit-rate and standing-charge information give the applicable details.

How fixed and variable tariffs differ

Feature Fixed tariff Standard variable or default tariff
What can change during the term? Agreed unit rates and standing charges stay as set for the contract term, subject to the contract’s wording. Rates and charges can change; for covered GB households, Ofgem caps the unit rates and standing charges.
Main advantage Rate certainty for the agreed term. Can benefit if variable rates fall, without having to wait for a fixed contract to end.
Main trade-off If variable rates fall, the fixed rates may leave you paying more; an exit fee may apply if you leave early. If rates rise, costs can increase when the supplier changes its rates, subject to the cap.
Does it set a maximum total bill? No. Your usage determines how much energy you pay for. No. The cap limits covered unit rates and standing charges, not total household expenditure.

Ofgem reviews the price cap quarterly. Its protection applies to covered household tariffs in Great Britain, not every energy arrangement. The cap is a limit on rates and standing charges—not a fixed maximum bill—so using more energy can still increase what you owe. See Ofgem’s explanation of the price cap and standing charges.

How to compare an actual fix with your current tariff

Use your own consumption and the rates that apply to your home. A headline “typical annual bill” can conceal important differences in region, meter type, payment method, standing charges and usage.

Watt Meter Power Meter Plug Home Electricity Usage Monitor 7 Modes Display
  • Various Monitoring Parameters: The power meter plug can monitor the power (W), energy (kWh), volts, amps, hertz, power factor, cost, minimum and maximum power (W), cumulative days and time of your appliances. By switching 7 display modes, you can easily know the various parameters while the appliance is working. The home energy monitor can also calculate and display how much power your appliance uses and how much electricity bill it cost in cumulative time
  • Upgraded LCD Display: With large screen size 2.36 inch x 1.85 inch, clearer monitor backlit, our electrical usage monitor can display the data clearer and more visible no matter day or night. 180°full wide viewing angles is great for reading and recording the data in any angles. No need to stand on the front of the display and bend over to read the numbers
  • Adjustable Backlight Time: Our upgraded watt meter has 5 options of backlight time. The default backlight time duration is 10 minutes(bL-0). If you want to change the backlight time, you can press and hold "UP" and "DOWN" button at the same time to enter backlight time setting, then press "UP" and "DOWN" to select the backlight time (bL-0 =10 minutes, bL-1=1 hour, bL-2=4 hours, bL-3=8 hours, bL-4=always on), finally press the "COST" to save the backlight time settings
  • Overload protection: When the power of the appliance exceeds the overload power, the LCD will display “OVERLOAD” to warn the user. All the buttons will quit working and can only be workable when you lower or remove the load power. The default overload power is 3680W and is adjustable from 0 to 3680W. In general, you need to set the overload power to 1800W before using. Just press the "function" button for more than 3 seconds to enter the setting
  • Data Memory Function: The wattage meter will record your power consumption data when you remove it from socket, or remove appliances from the electricity monitor. You can directly see the last data when you use it next time. This function can also automatically save the data when there is a sudden power failure
  1. Gather your current rates and usage. Check a recent bill or account for your electricity and gas unit rates, daily standing charges, payment method and annual consumption. Note any time-of-use periods if your tariff has them.
  2. Get the full fixed-offer terms. Record the separate gas and electricity unit rates, standing charges, contract duration and any exit fee. Confirm that the quoted rates apply to your region, meter and payment method.
  3. Estimate each annual cost. For each fuel, multiply annual usage by the unit rate and add the daily standing charge multiplied by 365. Add the two fuel estimates if comparing a dual-fuel arrangement. This gives an estimate, not a guaranteed bill: actual use may differ.
  4. Compare like with like. Set the fixed estimate beside the cost of your current variable rates, and check how those rates compare with the applicable regional cap rates. Do not treat the cap’s illustrative national averages as your personal tariff.
  5. Weigh certainty against flexibility. Consider whether the rate certainty is worth the offer’s cost and contract commitment to you, including the possibility that variable rates could later fall or that you may want to switch before the term ends.

When heating oil is your home’s fuel

Heating oil is separate from household mains gas and electricity tariffs. Ofgem says heating oil is outside the GB energy price cap. Its price can change quickly with fuel-market conditions, location, season and delivery timing, so the cap protections described above do not apply. Ofgem’s guidance on energy costs outside the cap covers heating oil and LPG.

Who this comparison applies to

This article concerns household mains gas and electricity in Great Britain. Northern Ireland, business supply, heat networks, LPG and heating-oil arrangements are outside the domestic GB price-cap comparison described here; their rules and costs require separate consideration. For the cap’s scope and operation, consult Ofgem’s price-cap guidance. The House of Commons Library also discusses tariff risks and domestic energy-market pricing in its briefings on help with energy bills and the domestic energy market.
