If a firewall is interrupting an encoder’s ordinary RTMP connection to YouTube, switch the encoder to YouTube’s current RTMPS endpoint and ask the network administrator to allow the encoder’s outbound TCP connection on port 443 to that endpoint. RTMPS protects RTMP with SSL/TLS. Copy the endpoint from YouTube Live Control Room; do not guess a server address or stream key.
Why a firewall can disconnect a YouTube stream
An encoder opens a network connection to YouTube’s ingestion server to send video. A firewall, proxy, VPN, or other security control can block or interrupt that connection. RTMPS sends RTMP over SSL/TLS and uses TCP port 443 for YouTube ingestion. YouTube’s developer guidance also requires the ingestion hostname for SNI authentication, so the correct hostname matters, not just the port. YouTube’s RTMPS ingestion guide describes the protocol and endpoint requirements.

For an encoder-originated stream, the network change to request is an outbound allow rule. This is not a request to forward an incoming port to your computer. OBS community troubleshooting guidance likewise says outbound RTMPS uses TCP 443 and does not require port forwarding; your organization’s administrator should apply its own network policy. Switch the encoder to YouTube RTMPS
- Copy the current endpoint in YouTube. Open YouTube Live Control Room, select the stream, and reveal the RTMPS URL if the interface initially shows ordinary RTMP. Copy the URL and the current stream key from the stream settings. YouTube’s help page explains how to reveal the RTMPS URL: Set up your encoder for live streaming.
- Update the encoder’s server and key. In the encoder’s streaming settings, paste the copied RTMPS URL into the server field and the current key into the stream-key field. Confirm the URL begins with
rtmps://and retains the hostname and path YouTube supplied. Do not substitute a generic endpoint. - Check RTMPS and TLS support. Make sure the encoder supports RTMPS. If it has a separate port field, use port 443 as required by YouTube. Preserve the endpoint hostname so TLS SNI authentication can work; verify the encoder’s certificate and TLS handling if it reports an SSL error.
- Start a test stream. Check the encoder’s connection status and YouTube’s stream health. Note the exact error and time if the connection fails or drops, then use the checks below.
Ask the administrator to check outbound access
Give the administrator the encoder device, the exact ingestion hostname copied from Live Control Room, the failure time, and the encoder error. Ask them to inspect firewall, proxy, or secure-web-gateway logs and determine whether policy permits that device to establish an outbound TCP connection to the endpoint on port 443.

Port 443 is commonly used for HTTPS, but its use does not mean every network allows every destination or protocol on that port. A proxy or inspection device may still block or terminate the connection. The administrator should check the relevant rules and logs rather than assume that port 443 is unrestricted.
Diagnose the error before changing more settings

A connection timeout can result from sending the wrong protocol to an endpoint; an SSL error points toward protocol, TLS, certificate, or hostname details. Neither error alone proves that a firewall is responsible. Use the timestamp and logs to distinguish endpoint configuration from network policy.

Rule out local security software, VPNs, and bandwidth limits
- Firewall or antivirus software: Security software on the encoder computer can interfere with the connection. Check its logs and use a controlled test only if permitted. Do not leave protection disabled as a permanent workaround. OBS troubleshooting guidance lists security software among possible causes.
- VPN: A VPN can change the network path or be subject to its own filtering. If policy permits, compare with the VPN disconnected or through an approved alternate route; involve the network administrator where required.
- Upload headroom: YouTube recommends about 20% upload headroom above the total stream bitrate. Count both primary and backup stream bitrates if dual ingestion is in use. Shared office bandwidth can reduce the capacity available to one encoder. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and network recommendations.
- Unstable connection: Dropped frames can indicate an unstable connection or insufficient capacity for the selected bitrate, not necessarily an encoder-software fault. Check the network path and available upload rate before changing encoding quality. OBS connection troubleshooting

- Test before the event using the same encoder, endpoint, and network you plan to use.
- Record the time, exact error text, encoder logs, and YouTube stream-health status for each failure.
- If an approved alternate network works while the managed network fails, give the administrator both results and the endpoint hostname. Treat this as a useful comparison, not proof of a particular firewall fault.
- Retest after an administrator changes a rule. Confirm the stream remains connected and that YouTube reports healthy ingestion.
Would another YouTube ingest protocol help?
YouTube also supports HLS and DASH. They differ from RTMPS in encoder support, latency, codec and stream requirements, and what a network administrator may allow. Consider them only if your encoder and YouTube workflow support the alternative and the administrator approves it.
