A buffering YouTube Live stream does not, by itself, show whether the problem is the network drive, FFmpeg falling behind, or the upload connection. Run the same FFmpeg command once from the network share and once from a local copy of the same file, then compare FFmpeg’s speed= output with YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health messages. The difference helps locate the bottleneck before you change settings.
Find which part of the stream pipeline is falling behind
A file-based FFmpeg stream has three relevant stages: reading the video, processing it, and sending the resulting stream to YouTube. A viewer-side buffering symptom alone cannot identify which stage is responsible. YouTube recommends monitoring stream health, and FFmpeg’s logs can show whether processing is keeping pace.

Collect details before changing anything
- Record your operating system, storage type and protocol (for example, a NAS share), and the exact FFmpeg version from
ffmpeg -version. Online FFmpeg documentation can change, and installed builds may differ. - Save the full command, but redact the YouTube stream key before sharing it or including it in support requests.
- Note whether FFmpeg transcodes the video or stream-copies it, and preserve relevant log lines, especially errors and the
speed=statistic. - During a recurrence, check YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health and messages. If you are recording a local archive, check whether it continues to grow and inspect the resulting file for audio or video problems.
Run a network-share versus local-copy test
Use the identical media file and FFmpeg command, changing only the input path. Keep the output settings the same so the comparison isolates the source location rather than a simultaneous encoding or bitrate change.
- Run the stream with the input file on the network share. Note when buffering occurs, FFmpeg’s
speed=readings and errors, and YouTube’s health messages. - Copy that same file to local storage, then rerun the same command with only the input path changed. An external SSD can be a convenient place to hold the test copy, but it is optional.
- Compare the runs. If the local-copy run resolves the symptom, the input path is implicated; the result does not prove whether the cause is the share, its network path, or read consistency.
If both runs behave similarly, the share is less likely to be the sole cause. Use the FFmpeg and YouTube observations below to decide whether processing or outbound upload needs attention.

Interpret FFmpeg speed and YouTube stream health
| Observation | What it suggests | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| The network-share run buffers, but the local-copy run does not, with output settings held constant. | The input path is implicated, but the comparison does not identify a specific share or protocol fault. | Investigate the share and its network path, and check read consistency. Do not assume an arbitrary FFmpeg queue or buffer setting will repair the underlying read problem. |
FFmpeg reports speed= below real time. |
Processing is not keeping pace with the stream. | Investigate CPU or other processing load and the filters or encoder settings in use. Do not treat an upload or storage adjustment as a confirmed fix for processing that is already behind. |
| FFmpeg keeps up, but YouTube reports unstable ingestion or stream-health problems. | The outbound path may not be reliably sustaining the configured bitrate. | Measure upload capacity and reliability, then compare the available upload rate with the stream bitrate and recommended headroom. |
These observations are diagnostic clues, not proof of a root cause. A reliable diagnosis may also require the command, logs, operating system, network filesystem protocol, and measurements from the affected setup.
Check upload capacity and encoder settings
Allow upload headroom
YouTube says the outbound connection must be enough to send the stream bitrate and recommends 20% headroom for the total bitrate. Assess upload speed, not download speed; on a shared connection, other traffic or limits can reduce the capacity available to the stream. YouTube also notes that connection disruptions can break a stream. See its streaming tips for current guidance.

Match the settings to the actual output
YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends RTMP or RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a 2-second keyframe interval; do not exceed 4 seconds. Its bitrate recommendations depend on codec, resolution, and frame rate, so there is no single correct bitrate for every stream. For H.264, YouTube lists 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps, 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps, and 8 Mbps for 720p at either 30 or 60 fps. These are YouTube recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular connection will remain stable. Consult the current encoder settings table for the full codec and resolution choices; the page also includes H.265/HEVC and AV1 ingest settings.

Do not apply buffer and pacing options as universal fixes
FFmpeg supports ordinary files and network streams as inputs, but an option that changes pacing or buffering is not automatically a remedy for slow file-share reads.
-re(also documented as-readrate) paces file input and is described by FFmpeg as useful for simulating real-time capture when reading files. It does not make a slow share faster. Avoid applying it indiscriminately, particularly to actual live or capture inputs. See the FFmpeg command-line documentation and FFmpeg option source.rtbufsizeconcerns memory used for buffering real-time frames.nobufferreduces buffering latency during initial input analysis. Neither is established as a fix for file-share read stalls; consult the FFmpeg all-options documentation for context.- Do not choose a universal
-thread_queue_size,rtbufsize,-re, or cache value without evidence from the specific input and logs. Queue or buffer changes can affect memory use or latency and cannot, by themselves, repair an under-capacity share or internet uplink.
Troubleshoot common symptoms
The stream stutters only when the file is on a NAS or share
Repeat the local-copy comparison with output settings unchanged. If that run is stable, investigate the share, the network route to it, and whether reads are consistent. The test points to the input path without establishing which part of it is at fault; there is no universal SMB or NFS tuning value established here.

The local-copy run also falls behind
Check whether FFmpeg’s speed= remains below real time. If so, focus on processing load, filters, and encoder settings. If FFmpeg keeps up, inspect YouTube’s health messages and measure outbound upload capacity instead.

YouTube reports poor or unstable ingestion
Check sustained upload capacity against the configured stream bitrate plus YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. A download test is not a substitute for an upload measurement. If capacity is insufficient, consider a lower bitrate or resolution and confirm the effect in Live Control Room.

FFmpeg buffering options have no clear effect
Return to the controlled comparison and evidence from logs and stream health. Buffering options have context-specific effects; changing them without identifying a bottleneck can add complexity without addressing the cause.
