Fix YouTube 24/7 Stream Stalls Caused by FFmpeg Input Read Errors

An FFmpeg input read error does not automatically mean YouTube is at fault. Identify the input protocol, preserve the full log, and test recovery separately from ingest settings.

An FFmpeg input read error is a symptom, not proof that YouTube has failed. First preserve the complete log and identify whether FFmpeg is reading a local file, an HTTP stream, or another source. Then troubleshoot that input path separately from the output connection to YouTube. Recovery flags can help with supported transient HTTP failures, but they cannot repair a source that keeps failing.

What an FFmpeg input read error tells you

The wording alone does not identify a root cause. Its meaning depends on the input protocol, source, FFmpeg build, and surrounding log. An error while reading the input is a different branch from a failure writing to YouTube; output errors may instead mention a broken pipe, RTMP, or writing. The available documentation does not establish a universal interpretation for every error string.

If you run a “24/7 YouTube radio station on repeat,” that phrase describes a use case, not a special FFmpeg mode. Establish whether the source is a finite recording or playlist, or a live/network feed, before choosing a recovery option.

1. Capture the first failure and classify the paths

  1. Save the complete command and log. Include the lines before the first error, not just the final message. Record the FFmpeg version and build, input protocol, source type, and whether the process exits, hangs, or continues producing output.
  2. Identify the input. Is FFmpeg reading a local file, HTTP source, or another protocol such as RTSP, a device, or a pipe? Note whether the source is expected to end or remain live.
  3. Separate input from output. Check whether the error occurs while reading the source or writing to YouTube. A source-read error should not automatically be treated as an ingest problem; an output-write error belongs in a separate investigation.
  4. Observe what happens after the error. A transient disconnect followed by resumed packets differs from a source that repeatedly ends or stops delivering data. A process restart may restore a service after an exit, but it will not fix a persistent failure.

2. Use reconnect options only for a matching HTTP input

FFmpeg’s HTTP protocol documentation describes reconnect controls for HTTP inputs. Depending on the installed version and context, these include reconnecting after disconnection, reconnecting at EOF for live or endless streams, reconnecting on network errors or selected HTTP errors, handling streamed inputs, limiting retry counts or delays, and setting a socket I/O timeout.

Verify the installed build’s help and documentation before relying on a particular option. Put input-specific options in the input context, before the corresponding -i input. Do not treat HTTP flags as universal fixes for RTSP, capture devices, pipes, or local files; protocol support and option behavior differ.

Use bounded retries and delays that you can monitor. The protocol reference exposes retry limits, but does not prescribe one universally correct count or timeout for a 24/7 broadcast. Repeated reconnects may recover a temporary interruption, while endlessly retrying a broken or exhausted source can leave the underlying fault hidden. Log reconnect attempts and verify that packets resume.

3. Check YouTube output and ingest separately

When the source appears to read correctly, investigate the output path as its own branch. Where practical, test the same source locally or send it to a non-YouTube destination to help isolate the path. During an instrumented YouTube test, check Live Control Room’s stream health and messages.

YouTube’s live encoder recommendations advise testing with audio and movement representative of the eventual stream, and choosing a quality the connection can reliably upload. For encoder configuration, YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval that does not exceed four seconds, and RTMPS. These are ingest and encoder recommendations; they are not a guaranteed cure for an FFmpeg input read error.

If your delivery protocol is DASH

The YouTube Live Streaming API DASH guide gives advice for failed DASH segment uploads: set the PUT timeout to 500 milliseconds longer than the segment duration and use randomized binary exponential backoff after failed uploads. It also says repeated failures should be signaled to the operator because they indicate a failing broadcast. This guidance is specific to DASH segment delivery, not a general RTMP retry recipe or a fix for reading an FFmpeg input.

4. Avoid fixes that do not match the fault

  • Do not add -re as a generic live-input repair. FFmpeg’s command documentation defines it as equivalent to -readrate 1, which limits input reading to real time. It addresses pacing, not network-read recovery; FFmpeg warns that low read rates on actual capture devices or live streams may cause packet loss.
  • Do not guess a timeout, retry count, or bitrate. The right setting depends on the source protocol and evidence in the log. A guessed value can delay diagnosis without resolving the fault.
  • Do not assume YouTube is the cause. Confirm whether the failing operation is input reading or output writing before changing ingest settings.
  • Do not treat a restart loop as a repair. It can relaunch an exited process after a transient problem, but can also conceal repeated source, network, or configuration failures. Preserve logs and alert on repeated restarts.

5. Run a representative health test

  1. Use the same source type and a representative duration, audio, and movement—not only a brief static test.
  2. Watch the FFmpeg log for input packet flow, the first read error, reconnect attempts, and whether packets resume.
  3. At the same time, inspect YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health and messages to see whether the output is being received as expected.
  4. Record the result, including the exact build, command, protocol, and whether the issue recurred. Change one relevant variable at a time so you can tell whether recovery behavior or ingest configuration affected the result.

Do not call a test proof of uninterrupted 24/7 operation. It provides evidence about the tested source and configuration; the root cause remains specific to the protocol and logs for the failing stream.
