Then check the exact share path and permissions before changing firewall or SMB security settings.
What error 0x80070035 means
The message “The network path was not found” is a symptom, not a diagnosis. The failure may involve local connectivity, resolving the computer name, SMB communication, a service or firewall, or access to the shared folder. Microsoft’s SMB troubleshooting guide describes failures across several of these layers.

1. Confirm both computers can reach the local network
- Make sure the computer containing the shared folder is powered on and connected to the network.
- Connect the Windows 11 PC and the host computer to the same local network. If they are on different networks, the share may not be reachable through the path you are using.
- If the Windows 11 PC is using Wi-Fi, check that its network profile is set to Private when it is a trusted home or work network. Do not mark a public network Private just to enable sharing.
Microsoft’s Windows network file-sharing guidance recommends checking the network connection and using a Private profile for sharing.

2. Turn on discovery and file sharing
- Open Settings and go to Network & internet > Advanced network settings > Advanced sharing settings. The exact route or wording can vary by Windows build.
- Under the Private networks profile, turn on Network discovery and File and printer sharing.
- On the computer hosting the share, check the corresponding sharing settings there too. Discovery on the client alone does not make a folder available if the host is not configured to share it.
If discovery still does not work, Microsoft lists four services to check on the computer that needs to be discoverable. Open services.msc and look for Function Discovery Provider Host, Function Discovery Resource Publication, SSDP Discovery, and UPnP Device Host. Microsoft recommends that these services be started and set to start automatically. Service configuration can affect discovery; changing it does not by itself prove or fix a share-permission problem.
3. Check the shared folder and account permissions
On the host computer, confirm that the intended folder is actually shared. Check both the share permissions and the folder’s file-system permissions: the account you use from the Windows 11 PC needs permission at both levels. Microsoft explains sharing with named people and accessing a shared folder by its network path in its file-sharing instructions.

- Use an account that has been granted access to the folder.
- Prefer granting access to the intended person or account rather than opening the folder broadly.
- If Windows prompts for credentials, use credentials recognized by the host computer. A path that reaches the host but fails at sign-in or authorization points to a different stage than a path that cannot connect at all.
4. Test the path by computer name and IP address
Enter the intended UNC path in File Explorer’s address bar, replacing the examples with the host and share names:

As a diagnostic comparison, try the host’s IP address in the path instead, for example \192.168.1.20ShareName. Find the correct address on the host rather than assuming the example address applies to your network.

- The IP path works, but the computer-name path does not: name resolution is a useful next area to investigate. This observation suggests a direction; it does not establish a single cause.
- Neither path works: check whether the host is reachable, the share name is correct, SMB communication is available, and firewall, service, or permission settings are interfering.
- The host or share opens but access is denied: focus on the account and permissions rather than treating it as a path-discovery failure.
For a Command Prompt test, Microsoft’s shared-folder troubleshooting material gives the net use pattern below. Replace the example placeholders with a drive letter and the actual server and share names:
net use Z: \ServerNameShareName
This tests a connection to the specified share; the result can help distinguish a connection problem from an issue opening it through File Explorer. Microsoft’s related article is specifically about Windows 10, so its guidance should not be treated as a Windows 11 diagnosis for every 0x80070035 case: Can’t access shared folders from File Explorer in Windows 10.

5. Investigate firewall, services, and SMB only after the basic checks
If the path still fails, check whether firewall rules or stopped services are affecting SMB traffic. SMB is the protocol Windows uses for remote file-system access over TCP/IP. Microsoft’s advanced SMB troubleshooting guidance recommends examining SMB Client and SMB Server event logs to locate failures. It notes that a TCP handshake failure can indicate a firewall block or a stopped Server service.
For more difficult cases, Microsoft recommends collecting a network trace on both the client and the server. This can help an administrator determine where communication stops; it is more informative than changing multiple security settings at random.

Avoid blanket security changes
Do not enable SMB 1.0, allow insecure guest logons, disable security signing, turn off password-protected sharing, or disable firewall protection as a generic fix. These changes can weaken security and are not established as a universal solution to error 0x80070035. Consider a legacy protocol or security-policy exception only when a specific compatibility requirement has been confirmed and an administrator has assessed the risk.
A Microsoft article about Windows 10 says a stopped or misconfigured TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper service can cause the related “System error 53” in the scenario it describes. That Windows 10 guidance does not show that the service explains every Windows 11 0x80070035 error.
When to ask an administrator for help
If the host is on, sharing and permissions are correct, and both name-based and IP-based paths fail, give an administrator the exact path tested, the client and host names, whether either path behaved differently, and any relevant SMB Client or SMB Server events. For persistent failures, a trace from both computers can narrow down whether the problem occurs before SMB communication, during negotiation, or after the connection reaches the host.
