To fix Windows without reinstalling, first identify whether the problem affects one app, Windows generally, or startup; then try the least disruptive repair that matches. A repair reinstall is available on some Windows 11 PCs and can preserve apps, files, and settings. Other options have different trade-offs, and no built-in tool can fix every hardware failure, app defect, or serious corruption.
Before you repair Windows, identify the problem and protect your data
Ask three questions: Does Windows start? Is the fault limited to one app, or does Windows itself crash, freeze, or behave unexpectedly? Did it begin after a particular app, driver, or Windows update? The answers help distinguish an app repair from a system or startup recovery.

Save open work and back up important files before choosing a reset or reinstall. If device encryption is enabled, find your BitLocker recovery key before entering recovery; it may be required to complete some operations in Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE). Microsoft’s Windows recovery options guide warns that some recovery choices can cause data loss.

Menu names and the availability of particular features can vary by Windows version and device. Prefer the normal Settings route when Windows is responsive. Repeated forced shutdowns and repair attempts are not a substitute for choosing the right recovery option.

If Windows starts, try repairs in this order
Repair a single malfunctioning app
In Windows, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps, select the app, open its advanced options if available, and choose Repair. Repair aims to address the app without resetting Windows. If Repair is missing or does not help, the app may offer Reset in the same area. App Reset is app-specific and may remove that app’s data or settings; check the app’s own guidance first. Not every app provides these controls. See Microsoft’s instructions for repairing apps and programs.
Use a troubleshooter or undo a recent change
For a Windows-wide issue, run the troubleshooter that matches the symptom. If the trouble began immediately after a Windows update, consider uninstalling that update from the available Windows recovery options. If it followed a driver or app change, use the relevant device or app controls rather than assuming Windows system files are at fault.
System Restore can return system state to an earlier restore point. It does not affect personal files, but it can undo system changes made after that point, including installed apps, drivers, or updates. Check the changes Windows reports before confirming. Microsoft explains the process in its System Restore guide.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Use Windows Update to repair Windows 11, if available
On supported Windows 11 configurations, open Settings > System > Recovery and select Fix problems using Windows Update, then Reinstall now. This reinstalls the current version of Windows to repair system files and components while preserving apps, files, and settings. Keep the PC connected to power and the internet while it runs. Microsoft notes that the option may not appear on every device or release; it is a Windows 11 feature, not a general Windows 10 repair route. Details are in Microsoft’s current-version repair instructions.
If Windows will not start, use Windows Recovery Environment
WinRE is a built-in set of recovery tools for problems that prevent Windows from starting normally. It may launch automatically after repeated failed starts. If you can reach the sign-in screen, hold Shift while selecting Power > Restart to open recovery options. From a working desktop, use Settings > System > Recovery > Advanced startup > Restart now (Windows 11); Windows 10 may show Advanced startup under Settings > Update & Security > Recovery. Installation media is another route if built-in access is unavailable. Microsoft describes entry methods and tools in its WinRE guide.
Run Startup Repair for a startup failure
- In WinRE, select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Repair.
- Select the Windows installation if prompted, then follow the on-screen instructions. If encryption is enabled, provide the BitLocker recovery key if requested.
- After the repair attempt, restart and check whether Windows starts.
Startup Repair scans for problems that prevent Windows from starting and may address issues such as damaged system files, boot configuration data, incompatible drivers, or registry errors. It targets startup faults; it is not a universal repair. See Microsoft’s Startup Repair documentation.
Use Safe Mode to narrow down the cause
In WinRE, choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart, then select a Safe Mode option from the list. Safe Mode starts Windows with a limited set of essential services and drivers. If the problem disappears there, that narrows the investigation toward something not loaded in Safe Mode; it does not identify the specific driver or service by itself. Microsoft lists the options in its Windows Startup Settings guide.

Remove a recent update or use System Restore
WinRE also offers options to uninstall recent updates or run System Restore. These are useful when the failure began after an update or system change, but they reverse changes rather than repair every possible cause. Review the on-screen prompts and the possible effects before proceeding.
Repair corrupted Windows system files with DISM and SFC
If Windows starts and symptoms suggest damaged Windows components or protected system files, run the servicing commands from an administrator account. Open Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin) by right-clicking Start, approve the prompt, and run DISM before System File Checker:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth- When DISM completes, run
sfc /scannow.
DISM repairs the Windows image that SFC uses; SFC scans protected system files and replaces corrupted files with cached copies when possible. Let each command finish before starting the next. Microsoft’s System File Checker instructions provide the official steps. A clean scan does not rule out failing hardware, a third-party app defect, or every update-related problem.

| Option | Must Windows start? | What it targets | What it preserves or changes | Availability and disruption |

| Startup Repair | No | Problems preventing Windows from starting | Attempts startup repairs; does not promise a fix | Run from WinRE; focused recovery |
| DISM and SFC | Yes for the commands described here | Windows image and protected system files | Repairs component or file corruption when possible | Administrator terminal required; targeted system repair |
| Fix problems using Windows Update | Yes | Current Windows 11 installation and components | Preserves apps, files, and settings | Supported Windows 11 configurations only; keep power and internet connected |
| Reset this PC: Keep my files | No; can run from WinRE | Windows installation | Preserves personal files; removes apps and settings | Windows recovery; substantial change |
| Reset this PC: Remove everything | No; can run from WinRE | Windows installation and selected drive contents | Removes personal files, apps, and settings | Windows recovery; highly disruptive |
| Clean installation from media | No | Windows on the selected drive | Can erase content; check Setup’s exact choices | Requires installation media created on another working PC; last-resort path |
When to reset or reinstall Windows
Understand what Reset this PC removes
Reset reinstalls Windows, so it is more disruptive than the repairs above. Keep my files preserves personal files but removes apps and settings. Remove everything removes personal files, apps, and settings. For either choice, Windows may offer Cloud download, which obtains a fresh Windows copy, or Local reinstall, which uses files already on the device. Back up first, and have the BitLocker recovery key available if the device is encrypted. Read Microsoft’s Reset your PC guidance and the exact prompts for your device before confirming.

If Windows will not recover through its built-in options, Microsoft describes creating installation media on another working PC and starting the affected PC from a bootable USB drive. A manufacturer’s recovery media may include device-specific drivers or factory apps that generic Microsoft media does not. A clean installation can erase content, so inspect the choices shown in Setup and confirm which drive and files will be affected. Start with Microsoft’s recovery options guide for the installation-media path.
If you suspect malware
First scan with Windows Security. If the issue continues, Microsoft describes a clean installation from installation media as an option that removes Windows, personal files, apps, and settings from the selected drive. DISM and SFC repair Windows components and protected files; they are not malware-removal tools.
Windows 10 support status
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft says affected PCs continue to work, but no longer receive the free software updates through Windows Update, technical assistance, or security fixes described on its support page. That date does not mean Windows 10 stopped functioning; it is a lifecycle consideration when deciding what to do with a PC that remains unreliable.
