If a website screenshot shows a CAPTCHA or “verify you are human” screen, the site’s bot-protection system has returned a challenge instead of the page. Changing the screenshot’s size or crop will not fix that. If the image is blank or missing content, the separate problem may be that the page’s JavaScript had not finished rendering when the capture ran.
First identify what the screenshot shows
A CAPTCHA or challenge page
A screenshot is produced by an automated browser request, and a website can classify that request as automated and serve a challenge. Cloudflare says requests from its Browser Run service are identified as bots, even when a configurable user-agent is used (Cloudflare Browser Run screenshot documentation). That statement is specific to Browser Run; it does not establish how every screenshot service behaves.

A larger viewport, higher device scale factor, or different crop changes the image, not the server response. Treat a visible challenge as an access or bot-protection issue, not an image-quality problem.

A blank page, loading shell, or missing content
If the screenshot does not show a challenge but the expected content is absent, the browser may have reached navigation completion before a JavaScript-heavy page finished rendering. Cloudflare documents waiting for network idle or for a known content selector as ways to capture after client-side content is ready (Cloudflare Browser Run screenshot documentation). These are rendering waits, not CAPTCHA bypasses.

If you are capturing a site you own
- Choose the right browser workflow. Cloudflare describes Quick Actions for stateless tasks such as screenshots and PDFs, and Browser Sessions for direct control using browser automation tools such as Puppeteer or Playwright (Cloudflare Browser Run overview). A browser session is useful when the capture requires scripted interaction; neither workflow is documented as a way to evade a site’s protection.
- Wait for the page you need. For a JavaScript-heavy page, use a suitable network-idle condition or wait for a selector that appears only when the target content is ready. Cloudflare’s screenshot documentation gives
networkidle0,networkidle2, and a page-specific selector as options. A selector is often a more meaningful readiness check than simply increasing a fixed delay. - Inspect your own security configuration. Check whether your WAF, challenge, or bot settings are intercepting the authorized capture workflow. Cloudflare’s Browser Run FAQ documents a WAF skip rule for Browser Run scanning an owner’s own zone (Cloudflare Browser Run FAQ). Scope any exception narrowly to the approved workflow and verify that it remains consistent with your security policy.
- Check possible detection contributors without assuming a cause. Cloudflare documents heuristic and JavaScript-based detection mechanisms. Network problems, ad blockers, or disabled JavaScript may affect JavaScript detections, but their presence alone does not prove why a particular request was challenged (Cloudflare JavaScript detections).
If you are capturing somebody else’s site
Use the site’s ordinary visitor access flow and respect its access controls. If the owner permits automated capture, ask for an approved method—such as an API, an authenticated workflow, or a narrowly scoped allow rule—rather than trying to disguise the automation. A change of user-agent is not a reliable fix: Cloudflare explicitly says Browser Run requests remain identifiable as bots when its user-agent is configured (Cloudflare Browser Run screenshot documentation).
If a person using Google sees the unusual-traffic warning, follow Google’s guidance for that warning. Google distinguishes it from an ordinary page-rendering problem and advises users to notify the site owner when the site’s CAPTCHA integration appears misconfigured (Google reCAPTCHA Help: My computer is sending automated queries).

If Google reCAPTCHA is broken for a person
For a reCAPTCHA widget that will not display or work in an ordinary browser, Google recommends using an updated supported browser, enabling JavaScript, and disabling plugins that conflict with reCAPTCHA. Google also notes that the site may have integrated reCAPTCHA incorrectly; in that case, contact the site’s webmaster (Google reCAPTCHA Help: Troubleshooting).

Can changing the user-agent make Cloudflare Browser Run look human?
Cloudflare says Browser Run requests remain identified as bots even when the user-agent is configurable.
Should I add a longer delay to get past a CAPTCHA?
No. A wait can help content finish rendering, but it does not bypass a challenge. Use network idle or a content selector only when the issue is incomplete rendering.
