Chrome Screenshot Captures the Wrong Language Version of a Website: How to Fix It

Chrome does not choose a website’s language when taking a screenshot. Select the site’s language, verify what rendered, and then capture the page.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Chrome’s screenshot command captures the page as it has already rendered; it does not choose the website’s language. To get the intended language, open that version’s URL or select it on the site, check that the correct text appears, and only then take the screenshot. Chrome language preferences and translation settings can affect what you see, but they cannot guarantee that a site will serve a particular version.

First, identify which language control is causing the mismatch

Several separate settings can affect what appears on screen. Changing one does not necessarily change the others.

Control What it changes Does it change the site URL?
Website language selector or localized URL The site’s own language version, if it provides one It may; check the address after switching
Chrome preferred languages A browser preference that some multilingual sites may use when choosing what to show Not by itself
Chrome page translation The translated text rendered for the current page Not necessarily
Chrome interface language Chrome’s menus and other browser controls, not necessarily website content No
DevTools language preference The DevTools interface locale No

The website controls how it uses browser language signals. Google Search Central recommends separate URLs for language versions and advises sites not to automatically redirect visitors based on an assumed language preference. Its guidance says: “Avoid automatically redirecting users from one language version of a site to a different language version of a site.”

Choose the website’s intended language first

  1. Look for a language selector. Choose the desired language on the site itself. Watch the address bar: the site may send you to a distinct localized URL.
  2. Open the localized URL directly if you know it. This is the clearest way to request a particular version when the site provides language-specific addresses.
  3. Check that the page really changed. Confirm that the visible headings and other text are in the language you want. A language selector may remember a choice, but the site’s behavior varies.
  4. If the site keeps returning to another language, test in a private window. Select the language again or open the direct localized URL there. If the result differs, a saved site preference may be involved; that test alone does not prove cookies are the cause.

Review Chrome’s language and translation settings

Reorder preferred languages

In Chrome, open Settings → Languages. Add the language you want, then move it higher in the preferred-language list if necessary. Chrome lets you add, move, and remove languages. This preference may influence sites that support multiple languages, but a site decides whether and how to use it; changing the order is not a command to override the site’s routing.

Check whether Chrome translated the page

If the page appears translated unexpectedly or into the wrong target language, open Settings → Languages → Google Translate and review the translation controls and target-language setting. You can also request translation from Chrome’s translate control or the page’s right-click menu. Translation changes the displayed text; it is different from loading the site’s own localized version.

Do not confuse browser language with website language

Chrome’s browser interface language affects menus, not necessarily the language of a website. Chrome Help documents changing that interface language on Windows; on Mac and Linux, Chrome uses the system’s default language. Changing the DevTools language preference affects DevTools’ own interface, not the page’s language.

Capture only after confirming the rendered page

Once the intended language is visible, use Chrome DevTools’ Device Mode screenshot controls. A viewport screenshot captures what is visible in the emulated viewport; a full-size screenshot captures the whole page. Check the displayed content before saving—the capture command records the rendered page and does not select a language version for you.

For developers: diagnose how the site selected a language

Language negotiation can involve request headers, but current Chrome privacy policy reduces the language information exposed in requests and through navigator.languages. Do not assume that a single header explains the result. Inspect the actual requests and the site’s routing behavior, and compare the response and rendered content for the intended URL.

If you already know the localized URL, ScreenshotNeo can capture it with one GET request. Replace the URL with the language-specific address you verified:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. The API captures the URL you request; selecting the correct language-specific URL is still the important part. ScreenshotNeo removes supported cookie and consent banners before capture, along with newsletter popups and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides screenshot tools for AI agents, including Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.

Common problems and what to check

What you see Likely distinction What to try
The screenshot has the wrong language even though Chrome menus look right Chrome’s interface language and the site’s language are separate Use the site selector or localized URL, then verify the page before capture
The site changes language after you open it The site may route visitors using its own rules or inferred preferences Note redirects, try the direct localized URL, and test the selector in a private window
The page text changes after using Chrome’s translate feature Chrome translation affects rendered text but is not the site’s own localized version Review Google Translate settings or disable/request translation as appropriate
Changing preferred languages has no effect The site may not use that preference, or may prioritize its own saved state or routing Use the site’s explicit language selector or direct URL; no browser preference guarantees an override
DevTools menus are in the wrong language DevTools locale controls its own interface only Change the DevTools language preference and reload DevTools; separately correct the website language
