Twitter/X videos showing with video but no audio usually isn’t random—it’s almost always a device audio routing issue, a browser autoplay/mute behavior, or a cached player state. The good news: you can fix it quickly with a repeatable sequence.
This guide focuses on the setups people actually use in 2024: the X app on iPhone/iPad and Android, and the player in desktop browsers like Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Safari. Follow the steps in order and you’ll identify the exact cause.

Why Twitter/X videos have no sound (common root causes)
- Audio is muted at the player level (the video element is in a muted state even though it looks normal).
- Autoplay restrictions cause media to start muted until you explicitly interact.
- Wrong output device is selected (Bluetooth headphones, HDMI/monitor audio, AirPods, USB audio).
- App/browser cache or corrupted cookies breaks the embedded media player.
- Power/Data saver modes throttle media behavior (Android Data Saver, iOS Low Power Mode, “restrict background data”).
- Browser extensions (ad blockers, privacy scripts) block or interfere with the audio player.
Because these causes differ by platform, the fixes also differ. That said, there’s one first-step that resolves the majority of cases.

The 100% reliable fix to try first (works across most setups)
This is the fastest “prove or eliminate” method: force the media player to re-initialize and explicitly start audio with user interaction.

- Stop the video (if it’s playing).
- Tap the video once to open it in focused playback (or open the tweet’s media).
- Toggle mute: if you see a speaker icon, tap it once to unmute.
- Close the player (swipe it away on mobile, or click outside/press Esc on desktop).
- Reload the tweet/page (pull-to-refresh on mobile; Ctrl+R / Cmd+R on desktop).
- Play again by tapping the video once (don’t rely on autoplay).
If audio works after this, your issue was a stuck muted state or a player initialization glitch. If it still won’t play, keep going with the platform steps below.
Fix on iPhone and iPad (iOS)
On iOS, the most common blockers are output routing (AirPods/Bluetooth) and silent switch / media volume. Then we’ll handle X-specific settings and player cache.
1) Confirm you’re not in Silent mode and check media volume
- Use the Ring/Silent switch on the side of your iPhone/iPad to ensure it’s not set to Silent.
- Open Control Center (swipe down from top-right on iPhone without a Home button; swipe up on older models).
- Raise the volume slider under your media controls.
2) Make sure audio output isn’t stuck on a wrong device
- If you’re using AirPods or any Bluetooth headphones, confirm they’re connected.
- Open Control Center → tap the AirPlay / audio output icon (speaker waveform) → select the correct output (iPhone/iPad speaker or the right device).
3) Restart the player with an explicit tap
Open the tweet again and tap the video once to start playback. If there’s a speaker icon overlay, tap it to unmute.

- Open the X app → Settings and privacy.
- Look for settings related to data usage or background activity and ensure any restrictions are disabled.
5) Clear the app’s in-memory state (quick reset)
- Swipe up to close X.
- Re-open X and test one video that previously had no sound.
6) If it still fails: reboot and reinstall (the “hard reset”)
If multiple videos have no sound, restart the iPhone/iPad and test again. If needed, delete and reinstall the X app (this forces a fresh media player state).

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
Fix on Android
On Android, check media volume, output device selection, and power/data restrictions. Then we’ll clear the X app cache and test again.
1) Increase the media volume (not just ringtone)
- Press the volume buttons while a video is playing.
- Make sure the volume is on media, not only ringtone/notifications.
2) Confirm the correct output device (Bluetooth/HDMI)
- If Bluetooth is on, open the Quick Settings panel and ensure the audio output matches your headphones/speakers.
- Toggle Bluetooth off and back on, or switch output to Phone speaker to test.
3) Disable “Data Saver” / restrictive background settings
- Go to Settings → Network & Internet → Data Saver (wording varies by brand).
- Turn Data Saver off.
- Also check Battery settings for X and set it to Unrestricted or the highest allowed mode.
4) Force close the app and clear cache
- Force stop X.
- Settings → Apps → X → Storage.
- Tap Clear cache (not clear storage unless you want to sign in again).
- Open X and test playback.
5) Update X app and your WebView/system components
Outdated Android system web components can break embedded playback. Update X from the Play Store and ensure your device is current. If you use a custom ROM or stripped system WebView, that’s a common source of “video plays but no sound.”
Fix on Windows and macOS browsers
If Twitter/X videos have no sound in a browser, the fix is usually autoplay/mute policy, audio routing, or a blocked media element due to extensions/privacy settings.
1) Start playback with a direct click
Browsers often block autoplay with sound. Click the video once, then click the speaker/unmute control if one appears.

2) Select the correct audio output device
- Windows 11/10: click the speaker icon in the system tray → choose the correct output (speakers vs Bluetooth).
- macOS: open System Settings → Sound → choose the output device (Mac speaker, AirPods, etc.).
3) Test in a clean browser profile
To rule out extensions, use Incognito/Private mode (or a new profile). If sound works there, the issue is almost certainly an extension.
4) Disable extensions that commonly break media
Temporarily turn off:
- Ad blockers (uBlock Origin, AdBlock)
- Privacy blockers (script blockers)
- Any extension that rewrites requests or blocks trackers
5) Clear site data for X and reload
- Open browser settings for cookies/site data.
- Remove data for x.com and twitter.com.
- Reload and test one known failing video.
6) Browser-specific notes
| Browser | Common culprit | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| Chrome | Autoplay policy + extensions | Use Incognito and disable extensions |
| Edge | Tracking/privacy blocking | Disable privacy extensions for x.com |
| Firefox | Enhanced Tracking Protection | Lower protection level for x.com |
| Safari (macOS) | Site permissions / caching | Clear site data for twitter/x and reload |
Fix if audio works in some tweets but not others
This pattern usually means the specific media file (or embed) is failing, or the player can’t decode that format for your browser/device.
Try the same video in a different player path
- Open the tweet, then open the video in a new tab (if available) and play it there.
- If the new tab has sound, your original embed view is the problem (cache/player state).
Check whether the video is actually muted at the source
Some posts are uploaded with audio disabled, or the account uses silent clips. Before assuming it’s broken, verify by watching on another device.

Troubleshooting checklist (fast diagnosis)
If you want the quickest route, work through this list and stop once sound returns.
- Tap the video (explicit user interaction), then tap the speaker/unmute icon.
- Confirm volume is up for media, not just ringtone/notifications.
- Confirm correct output device (speakers vs AirPods/Bluetooth).
- Close and reopen X or refresh the page.
- Disable extensions (desktop) or disable Data Saver/Low Power mode (mobile).
- Clear site data for x.com/twitter.com (desktop) or clear X cache (mobile).
- Update X app and your OS/browser (system WebView matters on Android).
When these steps fail, it’s usually a browser extension/privacy rule, a stuck audio output device, or an X app cache state.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What not to do (common mistakes)
- Don’t keep toggling random system settings without testing one video after each change.
- Don’t assume headphones are the cause—test using device speakers first to prove audio routing.
- Don’t clear all site data and reinstall apps repeatedly in the same session; one hard reset is fine, but doing it multiple times makes it harder to diagnose.
- Don’t ignore extension conflicts—ad/privacy blockers are one of the most frequent desktop causes.
Alternative workarounds
If you need audio immediately while you diagnose the root cause, these are practical workarounds.
Recommended Free Tools
- Watch the same tweet on another device (phone vs desktop). If it works elsewhere, your issue is local to the failing device/browser.
- Use a different browser (for example, Chrome → Firefox) to bypass a player/extension conflict.
- Try an incognito/private window to bypass cached cookies and extensions.
- Switch audio output (Bluetooth off → use built-in speakers) to force correct routing.
Bottom Line
The fastest way to fix Twitter/X videos with no sound in 2024 is to force the player to restart with explicit user interaction: open the video, unmute via the speaker icon if present, reload/close the player, then play again. After that, the remaining causes are almost always audio output routing, browser privacy/extension interference, or stale cache.

FAQs
Why does Twitter/X video play but there’s no audio even though volume is up?
Most often the video element is still in a muted state, or your device audio output is set to the wrong target (Bluetooth/monitor). Tap to play with sound controls, then verify output device selection.
Does clearing cache fix Twitter/X no sound?
Yes—especially on mobile. Clearing the X app cache (or browser site data for twitter/x.com) fixes corrupted or stuck media player state.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWill a browser extension cause no audio?
Frequently. Privacy and ad blockers can interfere with embedded media scripts. Test in Incognito/Private mode and disable extensions for x.com if sound returns.
What if only some videos have no sound?
Try opening the video in a new tab, switching networks (Wi‑Fi vs mobile data), or testing the same tweet on another device. That isolates whether the issue is specific to the media file/format or your player environment.
