Images not loading on X (Twitter) is usually a network, browser/app setting, or cached data problem—not a “broken image” problem. If you can load text and links but images stay blank, the fix is typically quick once you target the right layer.
This guide walks through tested methods for iPhone, iPad, Android, and web browsers. Use the steps in order; most cases get resolved without going to advanced troubleshooting.

- Outdated app/browser or a temporary media delivery glitch.
- Data Saver / Low Data Mode limiting media.
- Corrupted cache (app cache, browser cache, cookies, site data).
- Cookie or permissions changes that block media.
- Extension interference (ad blockers, script/privacy blockers).
- Network filtering (DNS over HTTPS issues, corporate/ISP filtering, VPN misconfig).
- Account/session oddities after a bot-detection challenge or stale login state.
Quick Checks That Fix Most Cases in Minutes
Before changing settings, do these fast sanity checks. They often clear a temporary failure.
- Force close and reopen the X app (or reload the browser tab).
- Switch networks: try Wi‑Fi vs mobile data (or vice versa).
- Disable VPN temporarily (if you use one).
- Try another device on the same network to isolate whether it’s device-specific.
- Check X status (if images fail for everyone, local fixes won’t help). If you don’t know where to check, search for “X status” in your browser.
Fix on iPhone and iPad (iOS/iPadOS)
On iOS, media loading commonly breaks due to Low Data Mode, blocked cellular access, or stale app cache.
1) Make sure cellular data and background refresh are allowed
Go to Settings > Cellular > find X and ensure cellular data is On. Then go to Settings > General > Background App Refresh > enable it for X (or enable globally if you prefer).

Go to Settings > Cellular > tap Cellular Data Options > ensure Low Data Mode is Off.
3) Update the X app
Open App Store > tap your profile icon > Update. Update X to the latest version available. App version mismatches are common after major media delivery changes.
4) Clear cache by reinstalling (reliable on iOS)
iOS doesn’t provide a “clear only cache” button for most apps. The most reliable approach is:
- Long-press the X icon > Remove App > choose Delete App.
- Reinstall X from the App Store.
- Log in again and test image loading.
Fix on Android
On Android, media loading issues often come from Data Saver, battery restrictions, or app cache corruption.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
1) Turn off Data Saver (and check app data permissions)
Go to Settings > Network & Internet > Data Saver > turn it Off. Also check Settings > Apps > X > Mobile data is allowed.

2) Remove battery restrictions for X
In Settings > Battery (or Battery & device care) find Battery usage or App battery. Set X to Unrestricted (wording varies by brand).
3) Clear cache (not data) then relaunch
Go to Settings > Apps > X > Storage > tap Clear cache. Reopen X and test media.
4) If it still fails, clear app data (last resort)
If cache doesn’t help, use Clear data to reset the app. You’ll likely need to log in again.
Fix on Windows, macOS, and Linux Browsers
Browser issues usually come from cache/cookies, blocked third-party media, or extensions modifying requests.
1) Reload with cache bypass
On Windows/Linux press Ctrl + F5. On macOS press Cmd + Shift + R. Then try loading images again.
2) Sign out and back in
Open X in your browser, open the menu, and sign out. After signing out, close the tab, reopen X, and sign in again. This resets session state and can clear media gating issues.
3) Test in a private/incognito window
If images work in incognito/private mode, you’ve confirmed a cache/cookie or extension problem.

Check Media Settings / Data Saver options
On X (web or app), open Settings and privacy and look for any option related to data usage, Data saver, Video autoplay, or Accessibility display. Turn off any data-minimization modes and ensure media can load normally.
Disable any custom accessibility/media reductions
If you enabled settings that reduce motion, images, or media rendering for accessibility, temporarily toggle them off to confirm the cause.
Fix Network and Browser-Level Issues
If images fail across multiple devices, your network path is the likely culprit.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors1) Toggle IPv6 (advanced but effective)
Some networks route IPv6 differently. Try disabling/enabling IPv6 in your network settings (or switch networks) to see if media requests start returning.
2) Check browser permissions for content
In your browser privacy/site settings, confirm you didn’t block images or cookies. Media often depends on cookies/trackers being allowed enough to retrieve signed image URLs.
3) Switch browser (fast isolation)
If Chrome fails but Safari/Firefox works (or vice versa), the issue is likely caching, extension configuration, or browser-specific privacy settings—not X itself.
Fix Extension, Privacy, and Ad-Block Interference
Ad blockers and privacy tools commonly break image requests by blocking domains used for media delivery.
Chrome / Edge: disable extensions one by one
Open extensions and temporarily disable:
- Ad blockers (uBlock Origin, AdBlock)
- Script blockers (NoScript-like tools)
- Privacy blockers (anti-tracking lists)
- “Image blocker” or “disable tracking pixels” tools
Once images load, re-enable extensions one at a time to identify the exact culprit.

Firefox: check Enhanced Tracking Protection and content blocking
Try turning Enhanced Tracking Protection to a less strict mode for twitter.com / x.com and remove any site exceptions that block media.
Safari: disable content blockers for X
If you use Safari Content Blockers, disable them for the X domain. Safari’s blocking rules can be aggressive and impact media loading.
Advanced: Clear Cache, Cookies, and Site Data (Web)
This is the most reliable browser fix when private mode works but normal mode doesn’t.
Chrome / Edge (clear site data)
- Open Settings > Privacy, search, and services.
- Find Cookies and site data > See all site data and permissions.
- Search for x.com and twitter.com.
- Remove site data for those entries.
- Reload X and test images.
Firefox (clear cookies/site data for specific domains)
- Go to Settings > Privacy & Security.
- Under Cookies and Site Data, choose Manage.
- Remove x.com and twitter.com entries.
- Reload the page.
Safari (clear cookies for specific sites)
- Go to Safari > Settings/Preferences > Privacy.
- Manage website data.
- Remove data for x.com and twitter.com.
Advanced: Try Different DNS and Reset Network Settings
When images fail on multiple devices but other sites work, DNS filtering or route problems are common.
Try a public DNS (example values)
Pick one DNS provider and test for 10–15 minutes. Examples:
| Provider | Primary | Secondary |
|---|---|---|
| Google DNS | 8.8.8.8 |
8.8.4.4 |
| Cloudflare DNS | 1.1.1.1 |
1.0.0.1 |
| Quad9 DNS | 9.9.9.9 |
149.112.112.112 |
On mobile, you can often change DNS under your network or in your router settings. If you use a VPN or “secure DNS” feature, try toggling it off to compare.
Reset network settings (if you’re stuck)
iPhone/iPad: Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings.
Windows: Settings > Network & Internet > Advanced network settings > Network reset.

When It’s Only One Tweet or One Account
If images load everywhere else but not on specific posts, the issue is likely media authorization or deletion.
- Tweet includes blocked/expired media: the original media may have been removed.
- Protected account: if the content is from a protected profile you can’t access, media won’t load.
- Region/account restrictions: some images can be affected by regional filters.
Test by opening the same Tweet in another browser/device. If it fails everywhere, it’s almost certainly content-side or platform-side.
What to Do If Images Still Won’t Load
If the “main fixes” didn’t work, use this checklist to avoid wasting time.

- Try a different browser/app (Chrome vs Safari; X app vs web).
- Temporarily disable VPN and any DNS filtering apps.
- Check time/date on your device (wrong time can break secure connections).
- Update your OS (iOS/iPadOS and Android updates often include networking fixes).
- Reinstall X (iOS: Delete App + reinstall; Android: uninstall + reinstall).
- Try another account (log out and test in a different profile to isolate account state).
Comparison: App vs Browser (What Changes and Why)
The X app and web interface aren’t identical. They may use different caching strategies and different media request flows.
| Surface | Most common cause | Best first fix |
|---|---|---|
| X app on iPhone/iPad | Low Data Mode / stale app state | Turn off Low Data Mode + reinstall if needed |
| X app on Android | Data Saver / battery restrictions / cache | Clear cache + disable Data Saver |
| Browser (Chrome/Edge/Firefox/Safari) | Cookies/site data or extensions blocking media | Incognito test + clear site data |
FAQs
Why does X show thumbnails as broken or blank boxes?
That usually means the image request is failing (blocked by extensions/privacy rules, DNS filtering, or corrupted cache). Try private mode first; if it works there, you’re dealing with local settings.
Will clearing cookies log me out of X?
It can. Clearing x.com / twitter.com site data typically forces re-login. If you want to avoid that, remove only site data (not global cookies) and test.
Does X use mobile data differently than Wi‑Fi?
Yes. Low Data Mode and Data Saver policies can restrict media downloads on cellular. That’s why switching networks is one of the fastest diagnostics.
Recommended Free Tools
Can a VPN cause images not to load?
Yes. Some VPNs or “secure DNS” setups route requests in ways that block image delivery or break signed media URLs. Disable the VPN and retest to confirm.
What if images load on one network but not another?
Then your network path is likely filtering or blocking media endpoints. Try changing DNS (example values above) or test on a hotspot to confirm.
Bottom Line
If X images won’t load, start with the fastest isolation steps: switch networks, test incognito/private mode, and update or restart the app. Most “blank image” cases come down to Data Saver/Low Data Mode, extension blocking, or corrupted cache/site data.
If you still hit the issue after those, use the advanced steps—clear site data for x.com/twitter.com, try different DNS, and reset network settings. That combination reliably resolves the majority of 2024 image-loading failures.
