Discord soundboards let you trigger short audio snippets (SFX, memes, callouts) while you’re in voice. Depending on the option you choose, you’ll either trigger sounds directly inside Discord, or you’ll route audio from your PC/Mac into a voice channel using a virtual audio device.
This guide covers both approaches and includes 13 well-known soundboard tools and workflows (free and paid) that work on Windows and Mac. You’ll also get exact setup paths for the two most dependable routing methods.

What a Discord Soundboard Actually Is (and What You Need)
There are three practical ways to get “soundboard” audio into Discord:
Recommended Free Tools
- Built-in Discord Soundboard: A native feature that plays short clips from inside the voice channel (availability depends on your server and client rollout).
- Discord bot soundboard: A bot that lets you play pre-uploaded clips via chat/commands or UI buttons. The audio playback is handled by the bot in the voice channel.
- Local soundboard via virtual audio: A desktop app plays a clip, and a virtual audio cable (or loopback tool) sends that audio to Discord as a microphone source.
The “best” option depends on whether you want to run everything inside Discord or you want full control of your SFX library with hotkeys, folders, and triggers.

Even a streaming equipment accessory will not be dull looking when video production.
Quick Compatibility Checklist (Windows vs macOS)
Before you install anything, check these basics.
- Do you need local hotkeys? If yes, you’ll almost certainly use a local soundboard + virtual audio route.
- Do you want it to work for everyone in the server? If yes, a bot-based approach is usually simpler for other users.
- Do you need low latency? Local virtual-audio setups are fast, but the exact latency depends on your audio engine settings.
- Platform reality: Windows has mature virtual audio tools like VB-Audio and Voicemeeter. On macOS, BlackHole (free) and Loopback (paid) are the go-to choices.
Best 13 Free & Paid Discord Soundboards (Windows & Mac)
Below are 13 options you can actually use. Some are Discord-native (no virtual audio cable), and others are desktop soundboard tools paired with virtual audio routing.
1) Discord Built-in Soundboard
If your server and Discord build show the Soundboard UI, it’s the simplest path: upload clips, then trigger them from the voice channel. No extra software, no virtual audio cables.
Availability and creation permissions can vary by account/server settings, so if you don’t see it, you’ll need a local or bot-based alternative.
2) Soundboard (SFX-style) Bots via Discord
There are multiple community “SFX/Soundboard” bots that let you trigger audio in a voice channel. They’re convenient because the bot sends the audio for everyone to hear.
Pick a bot that supports your preferred trigger method (slash commands vs buttons) and has stable hosting and moderation controls.
3) Voice Alerts / Soundboard Controls in Voice-Mod style apps (Windows-focused)
Voice-mod style applications often include a “sounds” or “soundboard” library and hotkey triggers. They’re designed for Discord-like real-time voice use.
If you’re on Windows, this is one of the fastest ways to get punchy SFX with minimal setup.

4) VoiceMod (free tier + paid Pro)
VoiceMod is popular for Discord because it can route audio and provides a sound library/hotkeys experience (depending on version and plan). You typically select VoiceMod as your input in Discord.
Paid plans usually add more voices/effects and expanded sound features; the free tier is often enough for basic SFX triggering.
5) Voicemeeter (free) + Any Soundboard App
Voicemeeter isn’t a soundboard by itself—it’s the routing engine that turns your PC audio into a Discord microphone. Pair it with any local hotkey soundboard that can play audio from your system.
On Windows, this is a “power user” approach: lots of control, but you must set the correct Discord input device.

If you already have Apple’s audio tools, you can build a clip library in a project timeline and trigger or play it quickly. Then route the output through a virtual audio device (like BlackHole).
This approach is great for creators who want control over timing and mixing, but it’s not as “tap-to-meme” as dedicated soundboard apps.
13) Native Windows Soundboard-style hotkey apps (free + paid options)
Windows has a variety of small soundboard/hotkey utilities. The key is choosing one that lets you play audio with reliable timing and no extra buffering.
Pair it with Discord voice input set to your virtual audio device (VB-Audio/Voicemeeter) for dependable playback.
Windows Setup (Most Reliable Virtual Audio Route)
For Windows, the most reliable method is: soundboard app → virtual audio device → Discord input.

Option A: Voicemeeter route (recommended for multi-source)
- Install Voicemeeter (free) or Voicemeeter Potato (paid).
- In Voicemeeter, add your soundboard output as an input source (or ensure Windows audio is routed into Voicemeeter).
- Open Discord and go to User Settings → Voice & Video.
- Under Input Device, select Voicemeeter Input (VB-Audio Voicemeeter VAIO) or the Voicemeeter input that matches your configuration.
- Set Voice Processing options carefully: start with everything off (noise suppression and echo cancellation) while testing, then enable if needed.
- In the voice channel, use Discord Soundboard or your hotkey tool to trigger a clip, then check the Discord input meter.
Option B: VB-Audio Virtual Cable route (recommended for one soundboard source)
- Install the VB-Audio Virtual Cable package that includes a virtual input/output device.
- Set your soundboard app’s output to the virtual cable (or route system audio into it, depending on the app).
- In Discord: User Settings → Voice & Video.
- Select your VB-Audio virtual cable as Input Device.
- Test with a short 1–2 second clip and confirm your Discord input meter spikes exactly when you trigger the sound.
macOS Setup (BlackHole + Soundboard App)
On macOS, BlackHole is the cleanest free virtual-audio option. The pattern is always the same: virtual device as Discord input, then play your clips through system audio routing.
Option A: BlackHole (free)
- Install BlackHole (macOS). After installation, BlackHole creates one or more virtual audio devices (e.g., BlackHole 2ch/16ch depending on the config).
- Open Discord → User Settings → Voice & Video.
- Set Input Device to the appropriate BlackHole device.
- In your soundboard app (or whatever app plays the SFX), ensure its output is directed to the system audio path that feeds BlackHole.
- Join a voice channel, trigger a short sound, and watch Discord’s input level.
- If the input level never moves, check macOS Sound settings for audio routing and ensure BlackHole has not been selected as output in a conflicting way.
Option B: Loopback (paid) for mixing multiple sources
- Install Loopback from Rogue Amoeba.
- Create a new Loopback device and add your soundboard source as an input.
- Optionally add processing or mixing so SFX stays consistent in volume.
- In Discord → User Settings → Voice & Video, set Input Device to the Loopback virtual device.
- Test a soundboard clip and confirm Discord’s input meter responds immediately.
Troubleshooting: No Audio, Delayed Audio, or Sounds Not Triggering
Soundboards fail for a few predictable reasons: wrong input device, macOS/Windows permission issues, conflicting audio routing, or Discord voice processing changes.
Discord shows no input level when you trigger a sound
- Check Input Device: In User Settings → Voice & Video, verify Discord is using the exact virtual device your soundboard route outputs to.
- Confirm the sound actually plays: Trigger the clip and verify you can hear it locally (before involving Discord).
- Disable enhancements during testing: Turn off noise suppression/echo cancellation to remove extra processing variables.
Audio is delayed or “mushy”
- Lower buffer where possible: If your virtual audio tool exposes latency/buffer settings, reduce them.
- Avoid double-processing: Don’t run multiple layers of virtual routing if one is enough.
- Use short clips: Very long audio loops can create perceived delay when triggered.
Only some people hear the sound
- Bot permissions: For bot-based soundboards, ensure the bot has access to the voice channel and can speak.
- Mic vs bot audio: If you’re using local virtual audio, every listener hears it as your voice. If the server uses role rules or echo checks, you may need to adjust.
Feedback loop / echo starts
- Don’t route BlackHole to itself: Ensure your virtual device is only used as Discord input, not also as your system output.
- Lower gain: Reduce Voicemeeter/Loopback levels so Discord doesn’t re-amplify the sound.
- Use push-to-talk for testing: If you’re seeing runaway audio, temporarily switch to push-to-talk to isolate the cause.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Wrong device name: Discord sometimes lists multiple inputs that sound similar (especially with Voicemeeter). Double-check the exact selected device.
- Overlapping routing: If your soundboard app outputs to both speakers and a virtual device, you can get duplicates or echo.
- Expecting perfect bot-level timing from local apps: Virtual audio is fast, but “instant” is still subject to buffer settings and system load.
- Forgetting loudness consistency: Loud SFX can trigger Discord’s automatic gain behavior. Normalize your clips or add mild limiting in Loopback/Audio Hijack/OBS.
Free vs Paid: How to Pick the Right Soundboard
| Option | Cost | Best for | Platform fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Discord Built-in Soundboard | Free (if available) | Fast setup, everyone hears it | Windows/macOS |
| Discord bots (SFX soundboard) | Often free | Server-wide triggering | Windows/macOS (you run it in Discord) |
| Voicemeeter + local soundboard | Voicemeeter free / Potato paid | Hotkeys + routing control | Windows |
| BlackHole + local soundboard | Free | Clean macOS routing | macOS |
| Loopback (Rogue Amoeba) | Paid | Mix multiple sources cleanly | macOS |
| Audio Hijack (Rogue Amoeba) | Paid | Processing + consistent loudness | macOS |
If you want “it just works” with minimal setup, prioritize Discord-native options or bot soundboards. If you want custom packs, hotkeys, and precise clip control, choose a local soundboard plus virtual routing.

Do I need a virtual audio device for a Discord soundboard?
No—if you’re using Discord built-in Soundboard or a bot, you usually don’t need virtual audio. You do need virtual audio when you’re routing a local soundboard app into Discord as your microphone input.
What audio format should I use for SFX clips?
Use common formats like MP3 or WAV. If you’re seeing playback failures, convert to WAV (PCM) and keep clips short (1–10 seconds) to reduce perceived latency and volume spikes.
Will this work if I’m using push-to-talk?
Yes. Push-to-talk can actually help with feedback and accidental audio. Just make sure your routing device is selected as Discord’s Input Device.
Why does my soundboard work in my first test voice channel but not a different one?
Channel permissions and server rules can block the bot or affect your voice state. Re-check input device selection in Discord and confirm the bot has Connect and Speak permissions for that channel.
Can I use the same soundboard setup on both Windows and Mac?
Yes, but the routing layer is different. Windows typically uses Voicemeeter or VB-Audio virtual cables; macOS typically uses BlackHole or Loopback.
Bottom Line
The best Discord soundboard for you depends on whether you want server-wide triggers (Discord-native or bot-based) or personal hotkey control (local soundboard + virtual audio). Windows users usually get the most control with Voicemeeter or VB-Audio; macOS users get the cleanest free route with BlackHole and the most mixing control with Loopback.
If you tell me what you want to trigger (memes, announcements, long clips), and whether you prefer push-to-talk or voice-activation, I can recommend the top 2–3 options from the list and a configuration that fits your setup.
