Before spending $100 on a mouse, check whether the problem is pointer speed, slow-movement precision, scrolling, or a hard-to-find cursor. Windows has settings for each; changing the relevant one may make your current mouse more comfortable to use, though no setting can guarantee a particular feel for everyone.
Where to find mouse settings in Windows
In Windows 11, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Mouse. In Windows 10, the documented path is Settings > Devices > Mouse. Microsoft’s mouse settings guide covers pointer speed, precision, scrolling, buttons, and related options. Labels and navigation may vary across Windows releases.

Adjust pointer speed if the cursor feels too fast or slow
Use the Mouse pointer speed slider to change how quickly the cursor moves across the screen. If the pointer overshoots targets or feels sluggish, move the slider a little in the direction that addresses the problem, then try the same everyday task again. A speed mismatch alone does not prove that the mouse needs replacing.

Try pointer precision for slow, careful movements
In Windows 11, the Mouse settings page includes Enhance pointer precision. Microsoft describes this option as making the pointer more accurate when the mouse is moving slowly. Turn it on and compare the result with it off during the sort of careful movement that feels difficult; the better choice depends on your preference and use.
Change how far the wheel scrolls
Mouse settings include controls for how much content moves with each wheel turn and for whether scrolling should affect multiple lines or a screen at a time. If scrolling feels jumpy or too slow, adjust the amount and test it in a document or page you regularly use. Horizontal scrolling applies only if the mouse supports it.

Make the pointer easier to see
For a cursor that is difficult to locate, Windows offers pointer appearance and visibility options. In Windows accessibility settings, open Accessibility > Mouse pointer and touch to find appearance controls. Depending on the Windows version and available options, additional pointer behaviors are under Additional mouse settings or Additional mouse options in the mouse settings flow.

- Your hand can relax in comfort hour after hour with this ergonomically designed mouse. Its contoured shape with soft rubber grips, gently curved sides and broad palm area give you the support you need for effortless control all day long.
- You’ve got the control to do more, faster. And side-to-side scrolling plus zoom gives you the power to scroll horizontally and vertically through your music library, maps and Facebook feeds, and zoom in and out of photos and budget spreadsheets with a click.* * Requires Logitech SetPoint software (Windows) or Logitech Control Center software (Mac OS X)
- Two years of battery life practically eliminates the need to replace batteries. ** The On/Off switch helps conserve power, smart sleep mode extends battery life and an indicator light eliminates surprises. ** Battery life may vary based on user and computing conditions.
- The tiny Logitech Unifying receiver stays in your laptop. There’s no need to unplug it when you move around, so there’s less worry of it being lost. And you can easily add compatible wireless mice and keyboards to the same wireless receiver.
Use the keyboard to move the pointer
Mouse Keys lets you control pointer movement with the keyboard. It can be useful when a mouse is difficult to use or as an alternate input method, but it does not improve the performance of the mouse itself. Microsoft lists Mouse Keys among its Windows accessibility options.

- Identify the specific friction: cursor speed, slow-movement precision, wheel scrolling, or visibility.
- Open the Windows Mouse settings page and change only the control tied to that issue.
- Try the same ordinary task that felt wrong before changing the setting again.
- If the problem remains, consider whether a different mouse would better suit your needs, including comfort, button layout, scrolling, compatibility, or accessibility.
Windows settings are a useful first check, not a promise that every mouse issue can be fixed in software. The available Microsoft guidance does not establish that a particular model or price is best, so a remaining hardware problem calls for comparing options against your own needs.
