Most The Forest timeouts are resolved without reinstalling: clear Steam’s state on both computers, make sure both copies are on the same game version, and have the host wait for the joining player before starting the session. If that fails, diagnose the dedicated server’s ports, firewall, and NAT in that order.
Prefer not to run the server on your own PC? Godlike.Host offers hosted The Forest servers with free DDoS protection and up to three free backups a day.
What a timeout in The Forest usually means
A timeout means the joining game did not complete communication with the host within the expected interval. That can happen before the game session is created (a Steam or version problem), while the host is transitioning into the world (a timing problem), or when traffic cannot reach the host at all (a router, firewall, or NAT problem).

What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Use that distinction to avoid changing several variables at once. Start with the two computers and Steam, then test the host’s timing, and only then change router or dedicated-server settings. A reinstall is rarely the best first move because it does not clear an out-of-date Steam session, correct a version mismatch, or repair an unreachable network path.
- Client-side: Steam is holding a stale session or the two players have different builds.
- Host timing: the host starts the game before the friend has finished joining.
- Reachability: a port, firewall rule, NAT layer, or incorrect local address prevents packets from reaching the host.
Run the quick fix sequence first
- Exit the game on both machines. Close any lobby or dedicated-server process as well as the game window.
- Restart Steam on both machines. Do this on the host and the joining computer, not only on the computer showing the error. A community troubleshooting guide identifies this as its most frequently reported fix.
- Check the installed game version. Both players must be running the same version. In Steam, enable the setting that keeps the game updated automatically (often shown as Always keep this game updated), allow any pending download to finish, and then launch again.
- Verify the game files if the versions still appear different or a download was interrupted. Open the game’s Steam properties, choose the installed-files option, and run Verify integrity of game files. Let Steam complete the scan before starting the game.
- Have the host create the lobby and wait. The friend should join successfully before the host presses Start or begins loading into the world.
- Retry once after both players have returned to the main menu. If the same error appears, record whether the friend can see the lobby, can join it, and only then gets disconnected. That point identifies the next branch.
Do not skip the waiting step. Reports for The Forest describe the joining connection timing out when the host starts too early. The host should remain in the pre-game lobby until the friend is visibly connected, then start the session.

Check for a version mismatch
A version mismatch can look like a network failure: the lobby may be visible, but the join handshake never completes. Steam normally updates both installations, yet a paused download, an opt-out beta branch, or a machine that has not restarted Steam can leave one player behind.
What both players should compare
- The game is installed from the same current Steam branch. If either player opted into a beta or legacy branch, select the same branch on both computers or return both to the default branch.
- Steam shows no pending update, queued download, or disk-writing operation for the game.
- Both players have restarted Steam after an update. The launcher can retain an old session until it is fully exited and reopened.
- File verification has finished on each machine if either installation reported missing or corrupted files.
No current patch-note set was available to establish which 2026 build introduced or removed a particular networking behavior. Treat matching versions as a prerequisite rather than assuming a specific patch is responsible for your timeout.
Fix the host-start timing problem
In a normal peer-hosted game, the host controls the transition from the lobby into the world. Starting that transition while the friend is still negotiating the join can leave the joining client waiting until its connection times out.
- The host opens the multiplayer lobby and invites the friend.
- The friend accepts and remains in the lobby until the host can see the joined player.
- The host does not press Start while the friend is still loading, joining, or showing an invitation prompt.
- After the friend is listed as connected, the host starts the game.
If the first attempt failed, both players should leave the lobby and create a fresh one after restarting Steam. Repeatedly pressing Start in the same stalled lobby does not repair a half-completed handshake.

Dedicated-server ports and Server.cfg
For a self-hosted dedicated server, use the values in the server’s own Server.cfg rather than assuming defaults. The Official The Forest Wiki documents these community-reported defaults:
| Setting | Default port | Traffic/use | What to do |
|---|---|---|---|
serverSteamPort |
8766 | Steam server communication | Check Server.cfg; forward the configured UDP port. |
serverGamePort |
27015 | Game traffic | Check Server.cfg; forward the configured UDP port. |
serverQueryPort |
27016 | Server query/listing traffic | Check Server.cfg; forward the configured UDP port. |
These are defaults reported for the dedicated-server tool, not a guarantee that every installation still uses them. The tool was added in update v0.59, and the configuration file can override the values. The command-line equivalents documented for the same settings are -serversteamport, -servergameport, and -serverqueryport.

Server.cfg is generated the first time the dedicated server launches. A Windows setup guide gives this path:

The path is reported by a setup guide and may vary with the account, installation method, or server-tool version, so use a file search for Server.cfg if that location is absent. Do not substitute dedicatedserver.cfg; that filename belongs to Sons of the Forest, not the original The Forest dedicated server.
Apply the port values safely
- Stop the dedicated server before editing its configuration.
- Open
Server.cfgin a plain-text editor and note the values for all three port settings. - If you changed a port on the command line, use that command-line value when configuring the router and firewall; the effective value must match in every place.
- Save the file, restart the server, and confirm that the server process is listening on the intended ports before testing from outside the local network.
One third-party configuration page labels port 8766 as an RCON or Telnet port and lists settings not corroborated by the official wiki. Do not use that page to redefine the three server port meanings; rely on the values actually present in Server.cfg and the dedicated-server documentation.

Port forwarding is relevant only when the server must be reached through a router. A local address can still work while an internet player cannot connect because the router has no rule sending incoming traffic to the server computer.
- Give the host a stable local address. Reserve its LAN address in the router’s DHCP settings, or otherwise ensure that the address will not change between sessions.
- Create router forwarding rules. Forward each port configured in
Server.cfg—the commonly documented defaults are UDP 8766, UDP 27015, and UDP 27016—to the host computer’s current local IP address. - Allow the same UDP ports in the host firewall. A router rule cannot help if the operating system firewall drops the packet after it arrives. Create an inbound rule for the dedicated-server executable or for the configured UDP ports, depending on the firewall’s interface.
- Check for an address mismatch. The forwarding destination must be the host’s LAN address, not the router’s address, a VPN address, or an old DHCP address.
- Restart the server and test again. If you changed the router or firewall while the server was running, restart the server so it binds to the intended settings.
Forward only the ports the server is configured to use. Do not add unrelated ranges, expose the router administration interface, or place the host in a broad DMZ as a first-line “fix.” Those changes increase exposure without proving that the game server is reachable.

Recognize NAT and router failure modes
Several networking conditions can make a correctly configured game server unreachable. These are general causes reported in guides for hosted survival games; they are plausible network explanations, not game-specific confirmation for every The Forest installation.
Carrier-grade NAT (CGNAT)
With CGNAT, the internet service provider places multiple customers behind one public address. The router may show a private address on its internet-facing side, leaving you unable to receive unsolicited inbound connections even when local forwarding rules are correct. Ask the provider whether inbound hosting is supported or whether a public IPv4 address is available.

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Double NAT
Two routers in series can each perform network address translation. Forwarding a port on only the inner router leaves the outer router with no route to the server. Put the upstream device in a supported bridge or access-point mode, or create compatible forwarding on both layers with the correct addresses.
Hairpin NAT
Some routers cannot send a local player back through the router’s public address to reach a server that is also local. A local test may fail even though an outside player can connect. Test from a genuinely external network before concluding that the server is offline.
Best Value
Changing local IP address
If DHCP assigned the host a new address, the old forwarding rule points to the wrong machine. Compare the host’s current LAN address with the router rule and reserve the address to prevent recurrence.
Firewall profile or security software
A firewall can treat the server network as public and block inbound traffic, or a security suite can create a second blocking layer. Confirm that the rule applies to the active network profile and to the actual server executable or UDP ports.
Use a second network to isolate the fault
Testing from a different internet connection separates a game or server problem from a home-router problem. A phone hotspot is a practical temporary test, although mobile providers may also use CGNAT and may block inbound hosting.
- Keep the host server running on the normal connection.
- Connect the joining computer to a phone hotspot or another independent internet connection.
- Attempt the same join without changing the game version or lobby timing.
- Interpret the result:
- It works from the second network: investigate the original router, double NAT, CGNAT, firewall, or forwarding destination.
- It fails identically: return to Steam state, matching versions, host timing, and the dedicated-server configuration before changing hardware.
- The hotspot cannot host or discover the server: that test is inconclusive; mobile NAT restrictions can prevent inbound connections themselves.
This comparison is an isolation technique adapted from a Sons of the Forest networking guide. It is useful for locating a network boundary, but it does not prove that a particular NAT condition is a confirmed The Forest bug.
When the symptoms point to a specific layer
| Symptom | Most useful next check | Why |
|---|---|---|
| The friend cannot see or accept the lobby | Restart Steam on both computers and compare versions. | The failure occurs before the game session is established. |
| The friend joins, then times out when the host starts | Leave the lobby, re-invite, and wait until the friend is shown as connected before starting. | Early host transition is a reported cause. |
| Local players connect but an internet player cannot | Read Server.cfg, then check UDP forwarding, firewall rules, and the host LAN address. |
The local game path works; external reachability is the suspect layer. |
| The server worked until the router restarted | Compare the host’s current LAN address with the forwarding destination. | DHCP may have assigned a different address. |
| Changing ports produces no improvement | Confirm the server actually loaded the edited file and that the router and firewall use the same values. | A rule for an unused port cannot make the server reachable. |
Common mistakes to avoid
- Reinstalling first: this consumes time without addressing stale Steam state, version differences, or router reachability.
- Updating only one computer: the joining player and host need matching versions, not merely the newest version on one machine.
- Starting while the friend is still joining: wait for the connected-player state before pressing Start.
- Forwarding TCP instead of UDP: the commonly documented dedicated-server ports are specified here as UDP; verify the protocol in your server documentation and router interface.
- Forwarding to the public IP: router rules target the host’s private LAN address.
- Editing the wrong file: use
Server.cfgfor The Forest dedicated server, not the similarly named configuration used by its sequel. - Assuming defaults are active: command-line arguments or prior edits can change the ports, so the file and launch command take precedence over a generic list.
- Testing only from inside the same home network: hairpin NAT can make a working external server appear broken locally.
A clean escalation checklist
Work through this checklist in sequence and change one layer at a time:
- Exit the game and restart Steam on both machines.
- Confirm automatic updates are enabled and both installations report the same version.
- Verify files on either machine that had an interrupted update or file error.
- Create a fresh lobby and wait for the friend to appear as connected before starting.
- For a dedicated server, read the active values from
Server.cfgand compare them with any command-line port arguments. - Forward those UDP ports to the host’s current, stable LAN address.
- Allow the same ports or server executable through the host firewall.
- Check for double NAT, CGNAT, hairpin NAT, and a changed DHCP address.
- Run one test from a separate network, interpreting a hotspot result in light of mobile-NAT limitations.
If the timeout remains after these checks, preserve the exact symptom—whether the lobby is visible, whether the friend appears connected, and whether failure occurs at lobby join or world loading—before seeking further support. Those details are more actionable than repeatedly reinstalling the game.
