If it still fails, work through Windows Update and Microsoft Store’s separate app-update check, then try Repair before Reset or reinstalling. The message indicates an app-in-use update conflict, but the exact underlying cause can vary.
What the error means
Windows is reporting that the affected app is open while its update is being applied. A Microsoft Q&A discussion reports the exact wording with error code 0x80073D02 for Realtek Audio Control, but that is a user-generated Windows 10 report from July 2021—not an official diagnosis for Windows 11. Read the Microsoft Q&A report.

For Windows 11, Microsoft’s current Store-app guidance recommends starting with basic checks and then repairing, resetting, or reinstalling the affected app if needed. Microsoft’s Windows 11 troubleshooting steps are the basis for the sequence below.

Try the low-risk fixes first
1. Close the affected app and retry
Save your work, close the app with its X button, and retry the update in Microsoft Store. Don’t reopen the app until you have tried the update. Microsoft recommends closing and reopening the app as an initial troubleshooting step.

- 1.1 GHz (boost up to 2.4GHz) Intel Celeron N5030 Quad-Core
2. Sign in to the Microsoft account used with Store
Open Microsoft Store and confirm you’re signed in to the account you use for it. Microsoft’s guidance begins: “First, sign in to your Microsoft account.”
3. Check for Windows updates
- Open Start > Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates, then install any available updates and follow any restart prompts.
This checks for Windows updates; it does not update Microsoft Store apps. Those have a separate check.

- Equipped with a blazing fast Core i5 2.00 GHz processor.
4. Update Store apps
- Open Microsoft Store.
- Select Library.
- Select Get updates and allow available updates to finish.
Windows Update and Microsoft Store’s Get updates control handle different things: use the former for Windows and the latter for Store apps. Microsoft explains what Windows Update does.
Repair the affected app
If the update still fails, try Repair before choosing an option that may remove app data. In Windows 11, open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps, find the affected app, select its menu, choose Advanced options, then select Repair if that option is available.

Microsoft describes Repair as an option that can fix app problems without losing data. The option is not available for every app. See Microsoft’s explanation of app repair and reset.
When to use Reset or reinstall
Reset
If Repair does not help and the app offers Reset, return to Advanced options and select Reset. Reset returns the app to its default state and may remove its app data. Before proceeding, check whether you can restore any important data or settings.

Reinstall
If the error persists, Microsoft’s Store guidance recommends reinstalling the affected app. Find it in Microsoft Store’s Library and select Install if available. Reinstallation can affect app data or settings, so first make sure you can recover anything you need.
If the update is still blocked
If the standard steps do not resolve the error, contact Microsoft Support or the app’s support team. Include the app’s name and the exact error message and code, such as 0x80073D02 if that is what Windows displays. The older Windows 10 community report does not establish the cause of the same message on Windows 11, and the troubleshooting guidance does not guarantee that a particular step will fix every app.
