If an SSD freezes, disappears, or shows as Offline after a Windows update, first check its state in Disk Management and protect any accessible files. Bring an Offline disk Online, but do not initialize or format a RAW volume that may contain data. If Windows itself will not boot, use the separate recovery path for an INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE error.
Protect files before troubleshooting
If the drive is intermittently accessible, stop repeated write attempts. Copy irreplaceable files to a separate, known-good disk while the SSD is available. Microsoft recommends backing up important files before using external storage in its update-recovery workaround: Microsoft’s guidance on freeing space for Windows updates.

Check whether the disk is Offline, RAW, or not detected
Open Disk Management and find the affected physical disk. Note whether it is Offline, Online with a healthy partition, or shows a RAW volume. These states call for different actions; “drive offline” in an error message does not by itself establish which one applies.

- Volume is RAW and contains files you need: do not format it. Microsoft warns that formatting erases data. Avoid initializing it as well until you have considered data recovery.
- Disk does not appear in Disk Management: check whether it is visible in BIOS/UEFI, then investigate the physical connection and drive detection before attempting volume-level changes.
Record the drive and update details
Before changing firmware or hardware, write down the SSD model, whether it is NVMe or SATA, its current firmware version if available, the computer or motherboard model, and the date or identifier of the Windows update. This helps distinguish a drive-specific issue from a system or controller problem.

Microsoft says end users need to identify the storage disks in their device and obtain the correct firmware utility from the manufacturer’s website. For NVMe, Microsoft’s storage-firmware documentation also describes Get-StorageFirmwareInformation for viewing firmware details: Storage firmware update guidance.
Use only firmware from the SSD or computer maker
Check the official support page for the exact SSD model or computer model. Microsoft states: “You should always obtain any firmware directly from your OEM, solution vendor, or drive vendor and not download it from other parties.” Follow the vendor’s instructions for the exact model and firmware package; do not use a firmware image intended for a similar-looking drive.

Firmware activation may briefly interrupt input/output. Microsoft reported in 2022 that activation times vary by drive design, ranging from fewer than five seconds to more than 30 seconds. Do not power off during a legitimate activation unless the manufacturer’s instructions direct you to do so. Microsoft’s firmware-update documentation describes the process and cautions.

An INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE stop error is not the same problem as a disk merely appearing Offline after Windows starts. Microsoft’s guidance lists corrupted boot files and storage-controller changes among possible causes and provides recovery steps through Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE). Follow the applicable steps in Microsoft’s Inaccessible_Boot_Device troubleshooting guide. Do not change storage-controller settings at random; a mismatch can prevent Windows from booting.

Test whether the problem follows the SSD
If the SSD is removable and the computer maker’s service guidance permits it, shut the computer down fully before reseating the drive. If practical, test it in another known-good M.2 slot or in a compatible USB enclosure. Check compatibility first: M.2 describes a form factor, not a guarantee of NVMe/SATA compatibility; confirm the drive protocol, connector keying, and physical length supported by the slot or enclosure.
Interpret this as an isolation test, not a repair. If the symptom follows the SSD across a known-good connection, the drive or its firmware becomes a stronger suspect. If another drive also fails in the original slot, the slot, board, or platform firmware becomes a stronger suspect. These are diagnostic inferences, not proof; confirm with the system or SSD manufacturer before replacing hardware.

What the evidence can—and cannot—identify
Microsoft documents several possible causes and recovery paths, but does not identify one universal Windows update responsible for every SSD freeze or Offline report. A useful diagnosis depends on the particular SSD and system models, the update involved, what Disk Management shows, BIOS/UEFI visibility, and relevant event logs.

If the affected PC still runs Windows 10, note that Microsoft support for Windows 10 ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft’s update guidance also specifies at least 10 GB of free space on external storage for its Windows Update workaround; that figure applies to that workaround, not to SSD firmware installation or a general repair requirement.
