An open-weight language model can help turn your brother’s class materials into a structured study notebook, but it cannot supply reliable course-specific notes without those materials. Start with his syllabus, learning objectives and permitted class resources; ask the model to organize and explain only what they support; then check every definition, example and answer against the originals.
What an open model can—and cannot—do
OpenAI describes gpt-oss-120b and gpt-oss-20b as open-weight reasoning models. Their weights are available under the Apache 2.0 license and the gpt-oss usage policy, and they can run on infrastructure you control or through a hosting provider. They are not available in ChatGPT or through the OpenAI API, and the models are text-only; a photographed textbook page would need to be converted to text by another tool or workflow first. See OpenAI’s gpt-oss overview.
The title does not identify which model, if any, was used to make a particular notebook. Nor does it specify a subject, age, course, syllabus or source materials. Without those, it would be misleading to present sample course notes or answer keys as if they were your brother’s actual curriculum.
Build the notebook from his real course materials
Gather the syllabus, teacher-provided learning objectives, class notes and any textbook excerpts he is allowed to use. Those sources define what belongs in the notebook. Do not upload personal or sensitive information until you have checked how the chosen deployment handles data.

Give the model a bounded job rather than asking it to make a complete study guide from a subject name. For example:
Using only the materials below, make a study notebook for these learning objectives: [paste objectives]. Organize it into concise explanations, key vocabulary, worked examples drawn from the materials, recall questions and an answer key. Put a source pointer beside each factual explanation and answer. If the materials do not support a claim or answer, write “not in the supplied materials” instead of filling the gap from general knowledge. Do not invent examples, facts or citations.

Paste or provide the relevant text after the prompt, with clear labels for each source. If an objective has no supporting material, have the model flag that gap instead of silently filling it with outside knowledge. OpenAI’s accuracy guidance recommends defining the desired output, starting with a simple prompt, evaluating the result and iterating with context and examples.
Check the notes before your brother studies from them
A clear explanation is not proof that it is correct. Check names, dates, definitions, equations, worked steps and every answer-key item against the original class materials. Make corrections before sharing the notebook, and keep source pointers close to the claims so a questionable statement can be traced back to its source.

Providing relevant source text or using retrieval can help ground a model’s response, but it does not guarantee correctness. OpenAI’s accuracy guidance recommends retrieval and fact-checking as ways to identify hallucinations. A 2020 paper on retrieval-augmented generation reported results on its own benchmark tasks; those findings are not a guarantee about gpt-oss, this notebook or a student’s learning. See the RAG paper.
Think of the model as a tool that produces language, not as evidence that it understands the course as a teacher or student does. Serrano, Brumbaugh and Smith’s 2023 tutorial recommends evaluating language-model capabilities against defined tasks and evidence, while distinguishing a model from the product built around it. That is a useful standard for checking a study resource, too: judge the notebook by whether its claims match the materials and whether its questions test the stated objectives. See Language Models: A Guide for the Perplexed.

Use the notebook as a study aid, not just a reading handout
Once the content is checked, have your brother answer the recall questions without looking at the key, then compare his answers with the source-backed explanations. Where he cannot explain an idea, revise that section using the class materials and try again. This is a practical way to find unclear notes; the model documentation does not establish that making a notebook improves grades or learning outcomes.
Label the document as model-assisted. Keep it digital or print it for handwriting practice according to what suits him; the models described by OpenAI produce text, and the title does not require a paper notebook.

Choose how to run the model based on privacy, effort and cost
Open-weight does not mean that running a model is free or effortless. OpenAI says the weights are free to download and use under Apache 2.0 and the gpt-oss usage policy, but compute, storage and hosting may cost money. Costs depend on the infrastructure and provider. OpenAI notes that self-hosting may be cheaper in some cases, while the API Platform may be more efficient after maintenance and upgrades are counted; that is a conditional comparison, not a universal cost verdict.
| Option | Where materials are processed | Setup and upkeep | Cost and checks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Run it on infrastructure you control | OpenAI says data sent to a self-hosted deployment on infrastructure you control is not received or processed by OpenAI unless you explicitly share it with OpenAI or use a managed hosting partner. Your own environment’s controls still matter. | You manage the infrastructure and maintenance. | Compute and storage can cost money. Check hardware and runtime compatibility, and test how you will provide source text and verify outputs. |
| Use a hosting provider | The provider processes the materials; review its terms, logging, retention and data controls before sharing course content. | The provider supplies hosting, but the exact setup and service vary. | Costs vary by provider and workload. Check model and runtime compatibility, along with how you can ground and review outputs. |
These are deployment paths, not a ranking of providers. The OpenAI overview does not establish a best choice for a family study notebook. Fine-tuning is possible with open-source tools and chosen infrastructure, but not through OpenAI APIs; it is not a prerequisite for organizing a small set of course materials.
