Spotlight search trouble and a Touch ID password prompt can happen around the same time, but they are not proof of one shared fault. Check Spotlight’s indexing separately from why macOS is asking for your password: some password requests after sleep are expected security behavior.
First, identify what is actually failing
Separate the search problem from the login prompt before changing settings. Spotlight may show incomplete or missing results; Touch ID may ask for a password, reject a fingerprint, or fail to respond at the login window. Also note whether the Mac merely woke from sleep or instead restarted or logged out. If you use an external Magic Keyboard with Touch ID, include that in your checks.

Apple describes Spotlight as relying on an index that updates as data changes. It also says indexing can prevent a Mac from sleeping, but does not say that indexing causes Touch ID to fail. Treat the two symptoms as separate until troubleshooting shows otherwise.

Fix incomplete or missing Spotlight results
Check the search category and indexing status
Open Apple menu > System Settings > Spotlight (or Siri & Spotlight, depending on macOS). Confirm the category for the kind of item you are searching for is enabled. Open Spotlight with Command–Space; if indexing is underway, a progress indicator may appear at the top of the Spotlight or Siri window.

Indexing can take hours or days depending on how much data the Mac has. Apple says it completes faster when the Mac is idle and connected to power; an internet connection may also be needed for data such as email to download.
Rebuild the index for the affected disk or folder
If results remain stubbornly incomplete, Apple documents rebuilding the index for a particular disk or folder by briefly excluding that location and then removing it from the exclusion list:

- Go to Apple menu > System Settings > Spotlight (or Siri & Spotlight).
- Scroll to Search Privacy (or Spotlight Privacy).
- Add the affected disk or folder to the excluded locations.
- Wait a few seconds, select that location in the list, and remove it.
- Click Done and quit System Settings. Spotlight will reindex the selected disk or folder.
This is a targeted remedy for persistent search issues affecting items within a disk or folder, not a guarantee for every Spotlight problem. If macOS reports an unknown or permissions error, your account may not have ownership permissions for some of the items.
Know when a Touch ID password prompt is normal
Touch ID can unlock a Mac after it wakes from sleep once you have logged in with your password. A password prompt does not by itself mean Touch ID is broken. Apple lists these situations in which macOS may require the password:

- After the Mac starts up or restarts, or after you log out.
- After more than 48 hours without unlocking the Mac.
- After five consecutive fingerprint attempts that are not recognized.
- After a change to Touch ID settings.
- When automatic login is enabled.
Enter the password when requested. If the Mac continues to reject Touch ID after you have authenticated since startup, or repeatedly asks for a password in circumstances that do not match these cases, check the settings and sensor next.
Check Touch ID settings and the sensor
- Open Apple menu > System Settings > Touch ID & Password and make sure Use Touch ID to unlock your Mac is turned on.
- Clean and dry both your finger and the Touch ID sensor, then try again.
- If Touch ID works for some tasks but not unlocking, check the individual option for the function that is failing.
Apply Apple’s general Touch ID fixes
- Install the latest macOS updates available for your Mac.
- Restart the Mac.
- In Touch ID settings, delete and re-add the fingerprint, or add a different finger and test it.
If you use an external Magic Keyboard with Touch ID
Apple’s compatibility requirements differ by connector. Both models require an Apple silicon Mac; the USB-C model requires macOS Sequoia 15.1 or later, while the Lightning model requires macOS Big Sur 11.4 or later.

- Turn the keyboard off and back on.

If Touch ID works over USB but fails wirelessly, check for wireless interference. If the keyboard does not meet its model’s compatibility requirements, those requirements need to be resolved before treating the behavior as a fault.
