Then check Snapchat’s camera permission, restart and update the app, and restart your phone. If the rear camera also fails in your phone’s built-in Camera app, the problem may be outside Snapchat.
1. Make sure Snapchat is using the rear camera
Open Snapchat’s Camera screen and tap the loop icon to switch between the selfie and rear-facing cameras. Double-tapping the screen also switches cameras. Confirm that you’re looking at the standard rear view, rather than expecting a separate lens or ultra-wide option. Snapchat’s camera help topic describes these camera controls.

2. Check camera permission
Snapchat needs camera access for camera features such as taking Snaps. Check the app’s permission settings in Snapchat and your phone’s privacy or app settings. Menu names vary by operating-system version and, on Android, by phone manufacturer.

On Android
Review Snapchat’s camera permission in your phone’s app or privacy settings. The exact path can differ by manufacturer and Android version. See Snapchat’s Android permission instructions.
3. Restart and update Snapchat
- Fully close Snapchat, then open it again and test the rear camera.
- Check the iOS App Store or Google Play Store for a Snapchat update and install it if one is available.
Snapchat lists restarting the app and checking for an update among its camera troubleshooting steps.

4. Restart your phone
Restart the device, reopen Snapchat, and try switching to the rear camera again. A phone restart is another step Snapchat recommends for camera issues.

Switch from Wi-Fi to mobile data, or from mobile data to Wi-Fi, then test the camera again. Snapchat notes that connection problems can affect camera behavior. If the change resolves the issue, its guidance suggests contacting your internet or mobile provider for help.

6. Compare Snapchat with your phone’s Camera app
Open the phone’s built-in Camera app and try taking a photo with the rear camera. This is a useful diagnostic comparison, but Snapchat does not present it as an official test.
- The rear camera works in the Camera app but not Snapchat: The symptom appears limited to Snapchat. After the checks above, report it to Snapchat.
- The rear camera also fails in the Camera app: The issue may involve the phone or its camera rather than Snapchat alone. Contact the device maker or an authorized repair provider for model-specific help.
7. Report a Snapchat-only problem
If the rear camera works elsewhere but continues to fail in Snapchat after troubleshooting, report the problem in the app. Snapchat’s guidance gives this path: Settings > Support and Safety > Bugs and Suggestions > Report a Bug. Follow the in-app prompts. Snapchat does not promise a response to every report; see its support instructions for reporting app problems.

Is the missing ultra-wide option a rear-camera failure?
Not necessarily. Snapchat says its Ultra Wide Camera is accessed while using the back camera by pinching to zoom out. The feature remains in development on Android and may not be available to every Snapchatter. Missing ultra-wide mode alone does not establish that the regular rear camera is broken.
