How to Use Smart View to Mirror a Samsung Phone to Roku

To mirror a Samsung Galaxy phone to a compatible Roku, open Smart View from the phone’s Quick Settings, choose the Roku, then approve the request on the TV with the Roku remote. If the Roku is missing from the list, check model support, mirroring permissions, and the network connection.

Check that your Samsung and Roku support mirroring

Smart View sends your Galaxy phone’s screen and sound to a nearby display. Samsung says the receiving display must support Miracast; check the display’s manual or manufacturer if you are unsure. Keep the display’s software up to date. Connecting the phone and Roku to the same Wi-Fi network can improve stability, particularly during discovery, but Samsung notes that Wi-Fi is not always required for Smart View. Samsung says 5 GHz works best. Samsung’s Smart View guidance covers these receiver and network considerations.

Roku says most current-generation streaming players and Roku TV models support screen mirroring, but there are model-specific exceptions. Find your Roku model at Settings > System > About, then check Roku’s screen-mirroring compatibility list for the latest status. The Roku support page lists Express models 3960, 3930, and 3900 as supported and 3700 as unsupported; it lists Express+ models 3931 and 3910 as supported and 3710 as unsupported. On Express+ model 3910, mirroring works over HDMI, not composite/A/V.

Roku’s detailed mirroring guidance says Android devices running version 10.0 or later are likely to support mirroring, with listed Google-branded OS exceptions; “likely” is not a guarantee. Roku’s separate, broader media-sharing guidance describes support for most Android devices on version 4.2 or later, with Google-branded exceptions. Because those statements differ in age and scope, do not rely on the Android version alone: check the specific Samsung model and Roku model. See Roku’s screen-mirroring guidance and media-sharing information.

Start mirroring with Smart View

  1. Turn on the Roku TV or connect the Roku player to the TV. If the Roku’s mirroring prompt appears later, leave it visible.
  2. On the Samsung phone, swipe down from the top of the screen to open Quick Settings. Swipe again if needed, then tap Smart View. The icon or its location may vary by Galaxy model and software.
  3. Choose your Roku from the Smart View device list. If prompted on the phone, select the TV and tap Start now.
  4. When the Roku displays a connection request, use the Roku remote to select Allow for this session or Always allow to remember the approved device. Roku’s setup instructions specifically describe Smart View on Samsung Android phones; Samsung’s instructions also describe starting the connection and approving a TV permission request.

Roku may also offer Block or Always block. Those choices deny the current attempt or prevent future attempts, respectively. Once connected, the phone’s screen and sound appear on the TV, and you control the phone from the phone itself. To stop mirroring, disconnect in Smart View or press Home on the Roku remote.

Choose mirroring or app casting

Mirroring and casting serve different purposes. Mirroring reproduces the whole phone display—including menus, controls, and notifications—so the phone must stay powered on and in use. Casting sends supported content from an app to Roku playback instead; the phone and Roku should be on the same network, and the matching app must be available on both devices. Once playback starts, you can use the phone for something else or turn it off, and control playback with the Roku remote. Roku explains the distinction in its media-sharing guidance, and Samsung discusses Smart View in its support article. For a supported video app, casting is often a better fit than showing the entire phone screen.

Fix a Roku that does not appear or denies the connection

Roku summarizes common causes this way: “Most screen mirroring issues come down to device compatibility, your Wi-Fi network, or the screen mirroring settings on your Roku device.” Work through these checks in order:

  1. Verify model support. Check the Roku model at Settings > System > About and confirm both devices support mirroring. If you use an Express+ 3910, connect it through HDMI rather than composite/A/V. Consult Roku’s current compatibility information and Samsung’s Smart View guidance.
  2. Check the Roku permission choice. If you previously selected Block or Always block, a new request may be denied or not proceed as expected. Approve the prompt with the Roku remote when it appears; choose Always allow only if you want the Roku to remember that device.
  3. Put both devices on the same network. This is especially useful when the Roku is not listed. Confirm the phone and Roku are connected to the same Wi-Fi network, then reopen Smart View and check the device list. Samsung says same-network Wi-Fi can improve stability, while Roku includes reconnecting both devices to the same network in its troubleshooting guidance.
  4. Restart and reconnect. Restart the Roku and network router. On the phone, forget the Wi-Fi network and reconnect, then try Smart View again. Roku lists these steps in its screen-mirroring troubleshooting guidance.
  5. Check the receiver and its software. Confirm the display supports Miracast or screen mirroring, install available software updates, and check whether it requires a dedicated screen-mirroring mode. Samsung also recommends restarting the display or dongle by disconnecting its power, then trying again. See Samsung’s troubleshooting guidance.
