A black Selenium screenshot can come from the captured page state, the headless Chrome mode, the browser-driver pairing, or the save operation; there is no documented flag that fixes every case. Check that Selenium saved the file, compare headless with headful capture, verify Chrome and ChromeDriver versions, then test one change at a time. The steps below isolate the cause without treating any one workaround as guaranteed.
First, separate a save failure from a black capture
In Python, Selenium’s save_screenshot() saves the current window to a PNG and returns False if an I/O error occurs. Check that result and confirm the file exists at the path you expect. A True result means the save operation reported success; it does not confirm the rendered pixels are correct.

- Print or log the return value from
save_screenshot(). - Check the exact output path and open the PNG with an image viewer.
- If the file is missing or the return value is false, investigate the path, permissions, and writable storage before changing Chrome’s rendering options.
Use a controlled diagnostic sequence
Change one variable at a time and capture the same page after each change. This makes a result useful: if you change the browser mode, dimensions, and timing together, you will not know which one mattered.
1. Compare headless and headful runs
Run the same test with the same Chrome binary, driver, URL, viewport, and readiness condition, first headless and then with a visible browser. If only the headless capture is black, focus on the headless configuration or its environment. If both are black, investigate the page state, capture timing, and file itself rather than assuming headless mode is the cause.

- CRISP CLARITY: This 23.8″ Philips V line monitor delivers crisp Full HD 1920x1080 visuals. Enjoy movies, shows and videos with remarkable detail
- INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
- THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
- WORK SEAMLESSLY: This sleek monitor is virtually bezel-free on three sides, so the screen looks even bigger for the viewer. This minimalistic design also allows for seamless multi-monitor setups that enhance your workflow and boost productivity
- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
2. Record Chrome and ChromeDriver versions
Log both versions from the failing environment before upgrading or changing configuration. Selenium’s Chrome documentation says Selenium 4 is compatible with Chrome v75 and greater, and Chrome and ChromeDriver must match in major version. A mismatch is worth resolving before investigating more obscure rendering behavior: Selenium Chrome documentation.
3. Check the Headless implementation
Chrome’s newer Headless mode arrived in Chrome 112 and uses the regular Chrome browser code. Chrome documents --headless=new as the Selenium opt-in flag. Earlier Headless Chrome was a separate implementation with different bugs and features, so flag availability and behavior depend on the installed Chrome release. Use the mode supported by that release rather than assuming all Chrome versions behave alike: Chrome’s Headless documentation and New Headless in Chrome.

4. Make viewport and page readiness explicit
Selenium captures the current window. Set its dimensions deliberately and confirm that navigation has reached the state you intend to capture. A page’s initial document load may not mean its application content, images, or client-side rendering are ready; use an application-specific wait where necessary. Chrome’s command-line screenshot options separately document --window-size and --timeout for setting dimensions and delaying a capture: Chrome Headless command-line options.

5. Inspect the invisible session
If the image remains black, use Chrome’s remote debugging support to inspect the headless session and determine whether the page itself rendered as expected. Chrome documents --remote-debugging-port for this purpose. Treat it as a diagnostic aid, not a screenshot repair flag: Chrome Headless debugging.

Minimal Python starting point
This illustrates explicit Headless mode, a fixed viewport, and checking the save result. It is a starting point, not a verified fix or a substitute for a readiness condition appropriate to your page.
from selenium import webdriver
from selenium.webdriver.chrome.options import Options
options = Options()
options.add_argument("--headless=new")
driver = webdriver.Chrome(options=options)
driver.set_window_size(1280, 900)
driver.get("https://example.com")
# Add an application-specific readiness wait before capture when needed.
saved = driver.save_screenshot("capture.png")
print("Screenshot saved:", saved)
driver.quit()
The Headless argument and screenshot API are documented by Chrome and Selenium. Confirm that your installed Chrome release supports the selected mode and that the ChromeDriver major version matches Chrome before relying on the example.

When to test --disable-gpu
Do not add --disable-gpu as a universal black-image fix. Chrome’s Headless FAQ says it is needed only on Windows according to that page, describes it as a temporary workaround for some bugs, and says other platforms no longer require it. That FAQ was last updated 2017-04-27 UTC, so treat this as dated, platform-specific guidance and test it only when your platform and version context make it relevant: Chrome Headless FAQ. The same FAQ says Headless Chrome does not need Xvfb.

Troubleshooting by symptom
| Symptom | What to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
No PNG, or save_screenshot() returns False |
Output path, file permissions, and whether the destination is writable. | Fix the I/O issue and verify the file is created before changing Chrome flags. |
| PNG exists and is black in both headless and headful runs | Whether the intended page and application state are ready when capture occurs. | Wait for an application-specific readiness condition, then capture again. |
| Headful works but headless is black | Headless mode and the dimensions used in the invisible session. | Test the supported Headless mode and set an explicit window size, changing one at a time. |
| Behavior changes after a browser or driver update | Chrome and ChromeDriver versions, especially their major versions. | Record versions and use a compatible matching major version. |
| Cause remains unclear | The rendered session, not only the saved file. | Inspect the session with remote debugging and reduce the test to a minimal page and capture sequence. |
For a specific diagnosis, useful reproduction details are the Chrome, ChromeDriver, and Selenium versions; operating system or container; launch options; target page or a minimal equivalent; and the capture code. There is no established frequency statistic or single documented cause for black Selenium screenshots.
