They need different handling. For a predictable DOM consent panel, wait for it, make the appropriate choice through the site’s controls, then capture. Hiding or masking the panel changes the image, not the site’s consent state.
Why does my screenshot API capture a consent dialog covering the page?
Most visible consent banners and modals are ordinary page content layered over the page, not browser dialogs. A screenshot API captures what its browser renders, so an overlay can obscure the content beneath it. A native JavaScript dialog is different: it is managed by the browser and handled through dialog events.
Playwright examples below are guidance for Playwright, not universal syntax for every screenshot API. If you use another provider, look for its documented browser interaction or pre-capture hooks and confirm the behavior for your installed version.

- Native dialog: inspect whether the page calls
alert,confirm, orprompt. Playwright automatically dismisses these when nopage.on('dialog')orbrowserContext.on('dialog')listener is registered. If you add a listener, handle the dialog deliberately before the capture path that triggers it. - DOM overlay: inspect the rendered page and locate the consent UI using an accessible role and name or a site-specific selector. Consent markup and controls vary; there is no reliable universal selector.
Handle a predictable consent panel in the normal flow
If the panel appears on every run, explicitly wait for it and interact with the site’s intended control before taking the screenshot. Choose the action that fits your workflow—accept, reject, or manage preferences—rather than merely removing the obstruction from the image. Playwright recommends this explicit flow for predictable overlays instead of relying on page.addLocatorHandler().
This example uses a role-and-name locator; replace the accessible name with the wording exposed by the page under test. The example rejects optional consent only if that is the intended choice for your test.

await browser.close();Some consent interfaces are banners rather than elements with the accessible role dialog; use the role and locator that match the actual page. If the site navigates, reloads, or saves preferences after the click, wait for that expected result before capturing. Use a fresh browser context when your test needs to verify the initial-consent experience rather than a previously saved choice.
Use addLocatorHandler for unexpected blockers
page.addLocatorHandler() is for an overlay that may unexpectedly block an action, not a predictable consent step. Playwright documents it from v1.42. Its handler is checked before actions or auto-waiting assertions that require actionability checks; it is not a background watcher. If no relevant action or assertion occurs, the handler does not run. After the handler runs, Playwright waits for the triggering overlay to become hidden before continuing.

When to mask or style the consent panel
For a controlled visual test, you may want to preserve the panel, mask it for deterministic comparison or privacy, or alter its appearance in the capture. Playwright’s screenshot style option applies CSS during capture, including through Shadow DOM and inner frames. The mask option covers matched locator bounding boxes with a solid color (pink by default). These affect representation only: they do not click a consent choice, save preferences, or establish that consent was handled.

Choose capture scope separately
Changing screenshot scope will not clear a prompt. The default capture is the visible viewport; fullPage: true captures the full scrollable page. You can also screenshot a specific element. Select scope based on what you need to inspect after deciding how the consent UI should be treated.

- The native dialog freezes the capture: register a
page.on('dialog')orbrowserContext.on('dialog')handler before the code that triggers it, then accept or dismiss according to the test’s intent. Without a listener, Playwright automatically dismisses native dialogs; that rule does not apply to DOM overlays. - The consent locator times out: verify the actual role, accessible name, frame, and timing in the rendered page. A banner may not have role
dialog, and different sites use different markup. - The handler did not run: confirm a matching locator is supplied and that an action or auto-waiting assertion requiring actionability checks occurs while the overlay is blocking it. The handler does not run simply because the overlay appeared.
- The panel disappears from the image but returns on the next run: masking and capture CSS alter the screenshot only. If the workflow needs a consent state, click the intended site control and wait for the site’s resulting state.
- The full-page screenshot still shows the overlay:
fullPage: truechanges the capture area, not page behavior. Handle or intentionally mask the overlay independently. - A Playwright option is unrecognized: check the installed Playwright version and its matching API documentation; the version annotations in current documentation do not guarantee the option exists in an older installation.

Keep the same decision sequence: determine whether the prompt is browser-native or DOM-based, decide whether to make a consent choice or alter only the capture, then set viewport, full-page, or element scope. Translate each interaction into the provider’s documented hooks rather than assuming Playwright selectors or event behavior work unchanged in a hosted API.
